Ecologie trophique de la tortue verte Chelonia mydas dans les herbiers marins et algueraies du sud-ouest de l’océan Indien ArchiMer
Ballorain, Katia.
Reproduction of sea turtles primarily relies on body reserves stored during the time spent on foraging grounds prior to the nesting season. Accordingly, the investigation of foraging behaviour of sea turtles is critical for better assessing their biology but also for conservation issues of these endangered species. Sea turtles contribute significantly to the consuming biomass of their ecosystem and hence to its functioning, thus providing natural indications of the health of the ecosystem. Yet the trophic ecology of sea turtles is poorly documented because their feeding grounds remain poorly known and for most of them hardly accessible. Among sea turtles the green turtle is the only species where sub-adults and adults are mostly herbivorous feeding on...

Scaling of processes shaping the clonal dynamics and genetic mosaic of seagrasses through temporal genetic monitoring ArchiMer
Becheler, Ronan; Benkara, Elsa; Moalic, Yann; Hily, Christian; Arnaud-haond, Sophie.
Theoretically, the dynamics of clonal and genetic diversities of clonal plant populations are strongly influenced by the competition among clones and rate of seedling recruitment, but little empirical assessment has been made of such dynamics through temporal genetic surveys. We aimed to quantify 3 years of evolution in the clonal and genetic composition of Zostera marina meadows, comparing parameters describing clonal architecture and genetic diversity at nine microsatellite markers. Variations in clonal structure revealed a decrease in the evenness of ramet distribution among genets. This illustrates the increasing dominance of some clonal lineages (multilocus lineages, MLLs) in populations. Despite the persistence of these MLLs over time, genetic...

Density-dependent growth of bivalves dominating the intertidal zone of Banc d'Arguin, Mauritania: importance of feeding mode, habitat and season ArchiMer
Van Der Geest, Matthijs; Van Der Lely, Jorge A. C.; Van Gils, Jan A.; Piersma, Theunis; Lok, Tamar.
Accurate predictions of population dynamics require an understanding of the ways by which environmental conditions and species-specific traits affect the magnitude of density dependence. Here, we evaluated the potential impact of season and habitat (characterized by sediment grain size and seagrass biomass) on the magnitude of density dependence in shell growth of 3 infaunal bivalve species dominating the tropical intertidal benthic communities of Banc d'Arguin, Mauritania. Two of our focal species were filter feeders (Senilia senilis and Pelecyora isocardia) and one was a facultative mixotroph (Loripes orbiculatus), mainly relying on organic carbon provided by sulphide-oxidizing endosymbiotic gill-bacteria (i.e. chemosymbiotic). Distinguishing 2 seasons,...

Étude et modélisation des populations de macrophytes dans la lagune de Thau (Hérault, France) ArchiMer
Plus, Martin.
The works carried out can be divided in three main lines : design and management of experimental studies on primary production processes, macrophyte spatial distribution study and development of macrophyte and seagrass numerical models. In situ and in vitro experiments have been performed with the aim of studying the processes and the parameters involved in the photosynthesis-respiration system, as well as to establish the main biotic (self-shading effect, physiology of the photosynthesis, carbon, nitrogen and chlorophyll tissu contents) and abiotic (temperature, light and nutrients) factors controlling macrobenthic primary production. A seagrass ecosystem model based on nitrogen and oxygen fluxes has been developped. Model calibration and validation have...

Microsatellite markers developed through pyrosequencing allow clonal discrimination in the invasive alga Caulerpa taxifolia ArchiMer
Arnaud-haond, Sophie; Candeias, Rui; Serrao, Ester A.; Teixeira, Sara.
Polymorphic microsatellites were developed for the invasive green algae Caulerpa taxifolia using next generation DNA sequencing. Results showed a limited rate of microsatellites for the amount of sequences, possibly explaining failure of previous attempts for microsatellite development through classical methods. Eight polymorphic loci were selected that exhibited polymorphism and a null or negligible rate of amplification failure. The number of alleles per locus ranged from two to seven. The reconstruction of Multi Locus Genotypes and the heterozygosity and departure from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium confirmed the influence of clonal reproduction and showed the usefulness of this set of markers to successfully discriminate clonal lineages and analyze the...

Spatio-temporal dynamics of a Zostera noltii dominated community over a period of fluctuating salinity in a shallow lagoon, Southern France ArchiMer
Charpentier, Aude; Grillas, P; Lescuyer, F; Coulet, E; Auby, Isabelle.
The consequences of a sudden decrease in water salinity on a macrophyte community dominated by the marine species Zostera noltii were investigated in a shallow coastal lagoon (Southern France). The expected change in the community assemblage was a competitive displacement of Z. noltii by Potamogeton pectinatus and Ruppia cirrhosa. However, the results of an eight-year survey did not validate this hypothesis. Zostera noltii remained dominant after three years at low salinity (ca. 5) and then suddenly disappeared within one year. The decline of Z. noltii was not associated with an increase of other species. The maximum depth colonized by all species decreased, suggesting that light availability became a limiting factor for the aquatic vegetation. The high...

Seagrass ecosystems provide critical contributions (goods and perceived benefits or detriments) for the livelihoods and wellbeing of Pacific Islander peoples. Through in-depth examination of the contributions provided by seagrass ecosystems across the Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs), we find a greater quantity in the Near Oceania (New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago and the Solomon Islands) and western Micronesian (Palau and Northern Marianas) regions; indicating a stronger coupling between human society and seagrass ecosystems. We also find many non-material contributions historically have been overlooked and under-appreciated by decision-makers. Closer cultural connections likely motivate guardianship of seagrass ecosystems by Pacific...

Spatial distribution and nutritional requirements of the endosymbiont-bearing bivalve Loripes lacteus (sensu Poli, 1791) in a Mediterranean Nanozostera noltii (Hornemann) meadow ArchiMer
Rossi, Francesca; Colao, Elodie; Jose Martinez, Maria; Klein, Judith C.; Carcaillet, Frederique; Callier, Myriam; De Wit, Rutger; Caro, Audrey.
Sulphur-oxidising endosymbiont-bearing bivalves often inhabit seagrass meadows, where they can control sulphide levels and variably contribute to carbon cycling, by feeding on endosymbiotic bacteria and/or on particulate organic matter from the water column. The patterns of variability in their feeding mode and their spatial distribution within the seagrass meadows are however poorly studied. Seagrass beds form naturally patchy habitats with seagrass-sand edges that may have variable effects on different organisms. The present study aims at understanding differences in feeding mode and abundance of the endosymbiont-bearing bivalve Loripes lacteus (sensu Poli, 1791) as well as the physiological conditions of its endosymbiotic populations between edge and...

Etude des intermattes des herbiers à Posidonia oceanica. Analyse à différentes échelles spatiales de la structure des paysages sous-marins ArchiMer
Abadie, Arnaud.
Among Mediterranean marine ecosystems, Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile seagrass meadows form a habitat playing an important ecological and economical role. They form heterogeneous seascapes influenced by the impact of natural and anthropogenic phenomenon (of which the anchoring of leisure ships). These impacts lead to the formation of sand and bare mat patches called ‘intermattes’. By describing and using intermatte characteristics observed in Calvi Bay and more widely around Corsica, these PhD works precisely described intermatte and P. oceanica seascape dynamics in order to develop new methods of analysis. On the one hand, natural sandy intermattes formed by bottom currents show two types of border. Each has its own characteristics at the level of the...

Seagrass ecosystems of the Pacific Island Countries and Territories: A global bright spot ArchiMer
Mckenzie, Len J.; Yoshida, Rudi L.; Aini, John W.; Andréfouet, Serge; Colin, Patrick L.; Cullen-unsworth, Leanne C.; Hughes, Alec T.; Payri, Claude E.; Rota, Manibua; Shaw, Christina; Skelton, Posa A.; Tsuda, Roy T.; Vuki, Veikila C.; Unsworth, Richard K.f..
Seagrass ecosystems exist throughout Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs). Despite this area covering nearly 8% of the global ocean, information on seagrass distribution, biogeography, and status remains largely absent from the scientific literature. We confirm 16 seagrass species occur across 17 of the 22 PICTs with the highest number in Melanesia, followed by Micronesia and Polynesia respectively. The greatest diversity of seagrass occurs in Papua New Guinea (13 species), and attenuates eastward across the Pacific to two species in French Polynesia. We conservatively estimate seagrass extent to be 1446.2 km2, with the greatest extent (84%) in Melanesia. We find seagrass condition in 65% of PICTs increasing or displaying no discernible trend...

The Seagrass Methylome Is Associated With Variation in Photosynthetic Performance Among Clonal Shoots ArchiMer
Jueterbock, Alexander; Boström, Christoffer; Coyer, James A.; Olsen, Jeanine L.; Kopp, Martina; Dhanasiri, Anusha K. S.; Smolina, Irina; Arnaud-haond, Sophie; Van De Peer, Yves; Hoarau, Galice.
Evolutionary theory predicts that clonal organisms are more susceptible to extinction than sexually reproducing organisms, due to low genetic variation and slow rates of evolution. In agreement, conservation management considers genetic variation as the ultimate measure of a population’s ability to survive over time. However, clonal plants are among the oldest living organisms on our planet. Here, we test the hypothesis that clonal seagrass meadows display epigenetic variation that complements genetic variation as a source of phenotypic variation. In a clonal meadow of the seagrass Zostera marina, we characterized DNA methylation among 42 shoots. We also sequenced the whole genome of 10 shoots to correlate methylation patterns with photosynthetic...

Entangled effects of allelic and clonal (genotypic) richness in the resistance and resilience of experimental populations of the seagrass Zostera noltii to diatom invasion ArchiMer
Massa, Sonia I.; Paulino, Cristina M.; Serrao, Ester A.; Duarte, Carlos M.; Arnaud-haond, Sophie.
Background: The relationship between species diversity and components of ecosystem stability has been extensively studied, whilst the influence of the genetic component of biodiversity remains poorly understood. Here we manipulated both genotypic and allelic richness of the seagrass Zostera noltii, in order to explore their respective influences on the resistance of the experimental population to stress. Thus far intra-specific diversity was seldom taken into account in management plans, and restoration actions showed very low success. Information is therefore needed to understand the factors affecting resistance and resilience of populations. Results: Our results show a positive influence of both allelic and genotypic richness on the resistance of...

Les Caridea (Crustacea: Decapoda) des Herbiers de Phanérogames Marines de Nouvelle-Caledonie (Région de Nouméa) (Systématiquee, écologie, variations Nycthémèrales et vicariance) Naturalis
Ledoyer, M..
This study deals with Caridean fauna living between the leaves of New-Caledonian seagrassmeadows (Cymodocea sp. principally) from zero to about eight meters and sampled during day and night. Twenty species (all figured) were caught (excluding Alpheidae). All are known. Nevertheless, in some cases, small variations have been observed by comparison with the same species from other areas. Presently, 70 species are recognized from New-Caledonian marine waters, including the 17 species reported in this papier for the first time from that region. Comparison with Caridean fauna of seagrass-meadows of other areas (Australia, Japan, Madagascar) shows a very important resemblance between them.

The spatial and temporal fish species assemblages were analyzed throughout two annual cycles (2004-2005 and 2007-2008) in the Ría Lagartos Lagoon system, Mexico, via non-parametric multivariate analyses. We compared density and biomass of fish species among five habitat types defined by combinations of structure and environmental characteristics (hyperhaline, rocky, seagrass, channel, and marine), and three climatic seasons (dry, rainy, and northerlies). A total of 11,187 individuals distributed in 32 families and 63 species were collected. The most numerically abundant species were Floridichthys polyommus and Cyprinodon artifrons, while Sphoeroides testudineus contributed to the greatest biomass. Species composition consisted mainly of estuarine and...

Marine Plants of Tanzania. A field guide to the seaweeds and seagrasses of Tanzania. OceanDocs
Oliveira, E.C.; Österlund, K.; Mtolera, M.S.P..
This is a book about the macroscopic marine plants of Tanzania, namely the seaweeds or benthic macroscopic algae and the seagrasses, that are marine flowering plants. Having flourished in the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, taxonomic studies then became less popular and the emphasis of biological investigations turned to other aspects of biology. However, after realising how important the conservation of biodiversity is, we are now experiencing a new interest in a more naturalistic approach to biology. But today this “romantic” approach is often fuelled by extensive bioprospection, the search of new drugs and gene conservation for use in transgenic organisms of commercial value. This in itself could justify the production of a new book...

The Assessment of Water Quality and Pollution in Tanzania OceanDocs
Mohammed, S.M..
The coastal area of Tanzania (Fig. 1) encompasses a number of habitats that include coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds, sand banks, wetlands and beaches, among others. In addition to being essential linkages in the overall functioning of the coastal area, these coastal habitats support various resources both living and non-living. In addition, for generations the coastal area has provided life support to coastal communities where such activities as fisheries and related activities have played an important role in the social and economic development of local communities. In recent years, coastal tourism and mariculture have immerged as being potentially among most important economic activities nationally. The well being of these habitats and resources...
