Distribution of economic benefits from the fisheries of Lake Victoria OceanDocs
Abila, R.O.; Odongkara, K.O.; Onyango, P.O..
The Lake Victoria fishery contributes immensely to the socio-economic development of the riparian states. The East African Community has designated the lake basin as an ‘economic growth zone’, with the potential to develop into a major economic region. The fisheries are vital in creating employment opportunities, mostly rural-based, thereby helping to reduce rural-urban migration. Fish is also a rich source of animal protein for human consumption and provides raw material (fishmeal) for processing animal feeds. The fish industry contributes to GDP and has continued to be an important source of foreign exchange earned from fish exports. Besides, the fish industry contributes to the national and local government revenues through levying of various taxes,...

Gender, Rights And Poverty Issues:Lessons For The Sector OceanDocs
Harrison, E..
In its 1997 White Paper1, DFID establishes that poverty alleviation is central to its development strategy. The notions of gender and human rights figure strongly as part of this strategy. Gender equality is seen as key to poverty alleviation, as are mechanisms to ensure that basic human rights are met. These principles are also re-iterated by other international organisations in key policy documents such as the OECD s Shaping the 21st Century 2. The international interest in gender, poverty and rights reflects a number of related but not necessarily always compatible concerns. Because women often suffer most from poverty and a lack of ability to exercise their rights, it seems to make sense to consider these three issues together. But this may...

The effect of water Hyacinth, Eichhornia Crassipes, infestation on phytoplankton productivity in Lake Naivasha and the status of control OceanDocs
Mironga, John Momanyi.
The paper presents data collected in an assessment of effects of water hyacinth infestation on phytoplankton productivity in Lake Naivasha, Kenya. A summary of the status of control and strategies for the future is given. The ecological effects of water hyacinth, Eichhornia Crassipes, on Lake Naivasha have received little attention compared to the large body of work available on the weed’s socioeconomic impact on the country’s water ways and methods for its removal. This study was conducted to determine if water hyacinth infestation in Lake Naivasha affects phytoplankton productivity. Several sampling stations were set up in the lake at sites where the floating mats of the weed were present and sites where the weed was absent. Phytoplankton chlorophyll-a...

Guidelines for the Study of Shoreline Change in the Western Indian Ocean Region OceanDocs
Nyandwi, N.; Kairu, K..
This manual sets out an approach to the identification and monitoring of shoreline change and its causative processes at local and regional scales that is appropriate to the coastal management problems of the region as reported by the regional contributors. The approach aims to promote the targeting of sparse resources on the acquisition and provision of information that is most relevant to the management of the problem. The procedures for monitoring shoreline change and its contributory processes are described, including the use of accessible relevant regional information and data or meta-data sets.

Fishing and poverty levels around Lake Victoria (Kenya) OceanDocs
Abila, R.O.; Omwega, R.N.; Lwenya, C..
Fishing is known to be one of the oldest occupations of mankind and in Lake Victoria (Kenya); it has been largely practiced at artisanal levels. Despite this, poverty amongst the fisher folk remains high. Why the fisher folk remain in perpetual poverty was the key research question for this study. Sampling was conducted on 12 landing beaches between June and August 2004. Data was obtained using survey questionnaires; personal interviews were made using open-ended questions and beach observations. Results from this study indicates that 179 fishers sampled earned an average income of Ksh. 107,063 each in a year with modal income of Ksh. 57,600 while in a day they earned an average income of Ksh. 518 each with modal income of Ksh. 200. Fishers perceived that...
