An Alert Regarding a Common Misinterpretation of the Van Genuchten α Parameter Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
van Lier,Quirijn de Jong; Pinheiro,Everton Alves Rodrigues.
ABSTRACT Among the equations available to describe the relation between matric potential and soil water content, the soil water retention function, the most commonly used is the equation proposed by Van Genuchten in his 1980 landmark paper. In soil physics literature, especially in Brazil, several authors relate the inverse of the Van Genuchten parameter α to the air-entry pressure. This study aimed to show this common interpretation to be erroneous, as 1/α corresponds to water contents lower than saturation. The deviation depends on the m parameter. In fact, α is merely a scaling parameter relative to the matric potential axis. Recognizing this mathematical fact may improve the interpretation of soil hydraulic properties based on water retention parameters.

Can Soil Penetration Resistance and Bulk Density Be Determined in a Single Undisturbed Sample? Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Fernandes,Carolina; Silva,Roniram Pereira da; Marcelo,Adolfo Valente.
Soil quality indicators such as penetration resistance (PR) and bulk density (BD) are traditionally determined in a single undisturbed soil sample. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of PR measurements of undisturbed samples on the determination of BD in the same sample of two soils differing in clay contents. To this end, samples were collected from the 0.00-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m layers of two soils of clayey and very clayey texture. Volumetric rings were used to collect a total of 120 undisturbed soil samples from each soil layer that were divided into two subsets containing 60 units each. One sample set, designated “perforated samples”, was used to determine PR and BD in the same undisturbed sample; the other, named “intact samples”, was used...

Liquid Bovine Biofertilizer and Cultivation Effects on the Porosity of a Typic Haplocambids as a Function of Cultivation and Dose Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Alencar,Thiago Leite de; Chaves,Arilene Franklin; Freire,Alcione Guimarães; Assis Júnior,Raimundo Nonato de; Mota,Jaedson Cláudio Anunciato.
ABSTRACT The soil porous space is where processes related to gases and soil solution occur, and provides an adequate guide for agricultural practices. This study aimed to evaluate the integrated effects of cultivation and the application of liquid bovine biofertilizer on the porous network of a Typic Haplocambids (Cambissolo Háplico Ta Eutrófico) cultivated with figs (Ficus carica L.). Four treatments were evaluated (under fig cultivation with the application of 20, 40 and 60 % of biofertilizer through irrigation, a control treatment without biofertilizer and an additional treatment – soil under natural vegetation). Disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected in three soil layers (0.0-0.1, 0.1-0.2 and 0.2-0.3 m) with four replicates. The...

Deep subsoiling of a subsurface-compacted typical hapludult under citrus orchard Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Medeiros,João Carlos; Figueiredo,Getulio Coutinho; Mafra,Álvaro Luiz; Rosa,Jaqueline Dalla; Yoon,Sung Won.
Soil management practices which increase the root depth penetration of citrus are important to the longevity and yield maintenance of this plant, especially in regions where long periods of drought are common, even in soil conventionally subsoiled to a depth of 30-40 cm, when the orchard was first established. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of subsoiling on the physical and hydric properties of a Typical Hapludult and fruit yield in a 14-year-old citrus orchard located in Piracicaba, SP. The treatments consisted of: no-subsoiling (with no tilling of the soil after the orchard was planted); subsoiling on one side of the plant lines (SUB. 1); and subsoiling on both sides of the plant lines (SUB. 2). The subsoiling treatments were...

Assessment of pedotransfer functions for estimating soil water retention curves for the amazon region Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Medeiros,João Carlos; Cooper,Miguel; Dalla Rosa,Jaqueline; Grimaldi,Michel; Coquet,Yves.
Knowledge of the soil water retention curve (SWRC) is essential for understanding and modeling hydraulic processes in the soil. However, direct determination of the SWRC is time consuming and costly. In addition, it requires a large number of samples, due to the high spatial and temporal variability of soil hydraulic properties. An alternative is the use of models, called pedotransfer functions (PTFs), which estimate the SWRC from easy-to-measure properties. The aim of this paper was to test the accuracy of 16 point or parametric PTFs reported in the literature on different soils from the south and southeast of the State of Pará, Brazil. The PTFs tested were proposed by Pidgeon (1972), Lal (1979), Aina & Periaswamy (1985), Arruda et al. (1987),...

Araújo Pedron,Fabrício de; Fink,Jessé Rodrigo; Rodrigues,Miriam Fernanda; Azevedo,Antonio Carlos de.
Leptosols and Regosols are soils with a series of restrictions for use, mainly related to the effective depth, which have been poorly studied in Brazil. These soils, when derived from sedimentary rocks should be treated with particular care to avoid environmental damage such as aquifer contamination. The purpose of this study was to verify the behavior of hydraulic conductivity and water retention capacity in profiles of Leptosols and Regosols derived from sandstone of the Caturrita formation in Rio Grande do Sul state. The morphology, particle size distribution, porosity, soil density (Ds), saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks), basic water infiltration in the field (BI) and water retention were determined in soil and saprolite samples of six soil...

Müller,Marcelo Marques Lopes; Tormena,Cassio Antônio; Genú,Aline Marques; Kramer,Luiz Fernando Machado; Michalovicz,Leandro; Caires,Eduardo Fávero.
Gypsum application may enhance the soil quality for plants in terms of soil chemical and physical properties. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of gypsum application on the structural quality of a no-tillage Red Latosol. The experiment was initiated in September 2005 in Guarapuava-PR, with gypsum applications of 0; 4; 8; and 12 Mg ha-1 on the soil surface. In November 2009, two soil blocks were sampled from the 0-0.3 m layer for visual evaluation of the soil structure quality (Sq) and to determine the aggregate-tensile strength (ATS). Soil penetration resistance (PR) and gravimetric moisture (H%) of the 0-0.300 m layer were evaluated, and soil cores were collected (layers 0.000-0.075 and 0.075-0.150 m), to determine soil bulk density...

ABSTRACT: Land use and tillage practices may change soil structure and undermine sustainable agriculture; however, such changes are hardly identified in the short term. In this sense, agroforestry systems have been used to reduce soil degradation and promote sustainable production in coffee plantations. These areas are expected to have well-structured soils and hence improved root distribution. This study aimed to evaluate soil quality by the morphostructural and root distribution analyses comparing open-grown coffee and coffee in agroforestry systems with rubber trees for 19 years, in an Oxisol in northern Paraná State (Brazil). Treatments consisted of open-grown coffee (OG), coffee partially shaded by rubber trees (PSH), and coffee fully shaded by rubber...

A simplified Excel® algorithm for estimating the least limiting water range of soils Scientia Agricola
Leão,Tairone Paiva; Silva,Alvaro Pires da.
The least limiting water range (LLWR) of soils has been employed as a methodological approach for evaluation of soil physical quality in different agricultural systems, including forestry, grasslands and major crops. However, the absence of a simplified methodology for the quantification of LLWR has hampered the popularization of its use among researchers and soil managers. Taking this into account this work has the objective of proposing and describing a simplified algorithm developed in Excel® software for quantification of the LLWR, including the calculation of the critical bulk density, at which the LLWR becomes zero. Despite the simplicity of the procedures and numerical techniques of optimization used, the nonlinear regression produced reliable...

Topography and spatial variability of soil physical properties Scientia Agricola
Ceddia,Marcos Bacis; Vieira,Sidney Rosa; Villela,André Luis Oliveira; Mota,Lenilson dos Santos; Anjos,Lúcia Helena Cunha dos; Carvalho,Daniel Fonseca de.
Among the soil formation factors, relief is one of the most used in soil mapping, because of its strong correlation with the spatial variability of soil attributes over a landscape. In this study the relationship between topography and the spatial variability of some soil physical properties was evaluated. The study site, a pasture with 2.84 ha, is located near Seropédica, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, where a regular square grid with 20 m spacing was laid out and georreferenced. In each sampling point, altitude was measured and undisturbed soil samples were collected, at 0.0-0.1, 0.1-0.2, and 0.2-0.3 m depths. Organic carbon content, soil texture, bulk density, particle density, and soil water retention at 10 (Field Capacity), 80 (limit of tensiometer...

Spatial and temporal variability of soil electrical conductivity related to soil moisture Scientia Agricola
Molin,José Paulo; Faulin,Gustavo Di Chiacchio.
Soil electrical conductivity (ECa) is a soil quality indicator associated to attributes interesting to site-specific soil management such as soil moisture and texture. Soil ECa provides information that helps guide soil management decisions, so we performed spatial evaluation of soil moisture in two experimental fields in two consecutive years and modeled its influence on soil ECa. Soil ECa, moisture and clay content were evaluated by statistical, geostatistical and regression analyses. Semivariogram models, adjusted for soil moisture, had strong spatial dependence, but the relationship between soil moisture and soil ECa was obtained only in one of the experimental fields, where soil moisture and clay content range was higher. In this same field,...

Abstract An unresolved question about the use of animal waste in agriculture is its effect on the physical and chemical attributes of soil, especially in commercial grain producing areas that have adopted direct seeding system (DSS). Aiming at contributing to the clarification of this question, we conducted a study in the mid-north region of the Mato Grosso state, Brazil, in a soybean and maize commercial area consolidated in DSS. Different doses of liquid swine manure (LSM) were applied and compared with NPK mineral fertilization. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical and chemical quality of the soil and the productive potential of the soybean and maize crops under LSM doses and NPK fertilizer. Results indicated an increase in levels of K, P,...

Gamma-ray computed tomography to evaluate changes in the structure of a clayey soil due to agricultural traffic - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v33i3.4727 Agronomy
Pires, Luiz Fernando; Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa.
A first generation gamma-ray computed tomography (CT) equipped with a 137Cs source was used to investigate changes in soil structure due to agricultural machinery traffic. Core samples with volume of 55 cm3 were collected at the surface (0-10 cm) of a Brazilian clayey soil. Significant alterations in soil structure occurred after two passages of tractor wheels, with important decreases in soil porosity. CT data allowed a continuous analysis of soil bulk density and also soil porosity distribution for 1.25 and 1.20 mm layers, which cannot be provided by traditional methods commonly used in soil physics.

Calibration and study of soil physical-hydric relations using a frequency domain reflectometry probe CIGR Journal
Duarte, Thiago; Silva, Tonny José Araújo da; Bonfim-Silva, Edna Maria; Souza, Hanna Pricilla Barbosa.
The FDR Diviner 2000® probe is widely used to monitor soil moisture and to study physical-hidric relationships. The calibration equation provided by the manufacturer may not correctly reproduce the actual moisture value for the same type of soil with different bulk densities. In addition, it was postulated in this experiment that the capacitance probe can be used to determine the soil water tension and the initial soil water retention curve. Thus, the objectives were: to assess whether the calibration equation parameters of the FDR probe changes with the bulk density variation; estimate the soil water tension using the FDR probe; and verify the effect of the probe calibration in determining the initial soil water retention curve for the Red Oxisol at three...
