The Borborema Plateau is characterized by different stages of relief evolution, which modify the climate and vegetation, and where high-altitude tropical forests can be seen surrounded by caatinga. The aim of this study was to characterize the soils of a topo-climosequence in the Agreste region of the State of Pernambuco, and evaluate the influence of the relief and climate on the pedogenesis. A topo-climosequence was selected, and trenches were opened in the geomorphological features of high-altitude forest (P1), between forest and pediplane (P2) and on a pediplanation surface (P3 and P4). A morphological description and a physical, chemical and micromorphological characterization were carried out. In general, the soils are sandy, with the predominance of... |

Light soils occupy 8% of the Brazilian territory and are especially expressive in the new and last agricultural frontier in Brazil: the Matopiba region - in the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia -, where they represent 20% of the area. These soils fit into the textural classes of sand and loamy sand or sandy loam, down to 0.75-m soil depth or deeper, and they are mainly represented by Neossolos Quartzarênicos (Quartzipsamments) and, partly, by Latossolos (Oxisols) and Argissolos (Ultisols). The understanding of soil functioning depends on the establishment of distinguishing criteria for: organic matter dynamics; content and mineralogy of the clay fraction; coarse sand and total sand contents, in relation to those of fine sand; mean diameter... |

Soils attributes such as granulometry and density determine the distribution of pore size and condition physical and differentiated hydraulic behavior. Thus, knowing the characteristics of the soils allow the use of more adequate management techniques that lead to the improvement of the performance of the use of this resource. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diameters of granulometric fractions and the physical-hydric behavior of sandy soils from semiarid region of Brazil. Trenches were excavated to collect, describe, and characterize the morphology of soil samples. The soil bulk density, particle density, granulometry, water retention curve, total porosity and pore size distribution were evaluated. The textural difference among soil studied is... |

Abstract: Soil mapping demands large-scale surveys that are costly and time consuming. It is necessary to identify strategies with reduced costs to obtain detailed information for soil mapping. We aimed to compare multispectral satellite image and relief parameters for the quantification and mapping of clay and sand contents. The Temporal Synthetic Spectral (TESS) reflectance and Synthetic Soil Image (SYSI) approaches were used to identify and characterize texture spectral signatures at the image level. Soil samples were collected (0?20 cm depth, 919 points) from an area of 14,614 km 2 in Brazil for reference and model calibration. We compared different prediction approaches: (a) TESS and SYSI; (b) Relief-Derived Covariates (RDC); and (c) SYSI plus RDC.... |

One of the most serious problems in areas indicated for irrigation projects in the Brazilian Northeast region is the occurrence of sandy soils, known to have low moisture retention, but occurring in strategic locations in terms of water supply and geographical situation, and which can be used for agricultural purposes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of particle size distribution and porosity on the water retention capacity of sandy soils in the semiarid area of the Northeast region. Soil bulk and particle densities, total porosity (macro, meso and microporosity), field capacity, permanent wilting point and soil-water retention curve were determined in samples of surface (A) and subsurface (C or Bw) horizons of ten sandy soil... |

Water treatment residuals (WTR) application may improve the quality of sandy soils; however, nutrient deficiency to plants and potentially toxic elements (PTEs) may be limiting. In contrast, adjusting the WTR pH, soil pH and WTR application rate might prevent adverse effects. This study aimed to evaluate the environmental safety and agronomic effectiveness of limed WTR for application in sandy soils. The tested treatments were increasing rates (0, 15, 30 and 60 Mg ha−1 of dry mass) of ground, dried and limed WTR in sandy soil under field conditions. Soil samples with disturbed and undisturbed structure were collected to determine selected soil physical, hydraulic and chemical parameters related to fertility, as well as the soil concentration of... |
