Absence de captage de Crassostrea gigas dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron en 1981 : causes et conséquences ArchiMer
Berthome, Jean-paul; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Heral, Maurice; Razet, Daniel; Garnier, Jacqueline.
The want of C. gigas spat-catching in the Marennes-oleron basin in 1981 can be due to various different reasons which are analysed here. Physico -chemical and trophic factors that can induce variations in the quality of gametogenesis, are successively in comparison with the year 1979 when reproduction was good. The biochemical evolution and a study of gonads slow a lack in maturation in 1981 even during the summer period. Late maturation of gonads bring about physiological consequences which induced mortality of cultivated oysters at the end of winter. A feeble recruit and a decrease of the cultivated stock have economic consequences which here sketched up.

Changes in planktonic microbial components in interaction with juvenile oysters during a mortality episode in the Thau lagoon (France) ArchiMer

Oysters modify the planktonic microbial community structure by their filtration and NH4 excretion activities. While many studies have been conducted on this subject with adult oysters, none had been carried out in situ with juveniles. Pacific oyster juveniles (Magallana gigas, previously Crassostrea gigas) died massively all over the world since 2008 in relation with OsHV-1 infection. During mortality episodes, sick and dead oysters are not separated from healthy live ones, and left to decay in the surrounding environment, with unknown consequences for the nutrient cycle and planktonic microbial components (PMC). The present study aimed to elucidate for the first time the interactions between oyster juveniles and PMC during a mortality episode. Innovative...

Mass mortality in bivalves and the intricate case of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Barbosa-solomieu, Valerie; Renault, Tristan; Travers, Marie-agnes.
Massive mortality outbreaks in cultured bivalves have been reported worldwide and they have been associated with infection by a range of viral and bacterial pathogens. Due to their economic and social impact, these episodes constitute a particularly sensitive issue in Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) production. Since 2008, mortality outbreaks affecting C. gigas have increased in terms of intensity and geographic distribution. Epidemiologic surveys have lead to the incrimination of pathogens, specifically OsHV-1 and bacteria of the Vibrio genus, in particular Vibrio aestuarianus. Pathogen diversity may partially account for the variability in the outcome of infections. Host factors (age, reproductive status…) including their genetic background that has...

ArchiMer

Since spat mortality events that were firstly detected in 2008, Mediterranean shellfish industry seeks to exploit the Pacific oyster spat from lagoon natural recruitment. The CRCM, Cepralmar and Ifremer developed accordingly a research project named PRONAMED Phase 1 and 2 - 2010-2014, in order to define the economic potential of spatfall and improve knowledge of the reproductive cycle of Crassostrea gigas in this specific environmental context. The results of the past three year‘s study (2012, 2013, 2014) showed that broodstock have the ability to provide larvae after sexual maturation and spawning. A coincidence was noted between moon phase (new and full moon) and spawnings with an amplifying effect of storms on the intensity of spawning (Ubertini et al....

Les pratiques culturales peuvent-elles permettre de réduire la surmortalité du naissain d'huîtres creuses? Récapitulatif des essais d'élevage et expérimentations zootechniques menés sur le territoire français entre 2008 et 2010 ArchiMer

This paper summarizes knowledge about relations between husbandry practices and oyster spat mortalities since 2008 in France. These relations are strictly analyzed from a panel of experiments set on the shore (in outdoor experiments) by Ifremer teams and technical institutes all over French coasts. Results show some practices are able to reduce spat mortality with some influencing factors relevant of spat quality (sanitary status, natural or genetic selection) or husbandry practices. Spat “free” of virus is able to survive up to 90% when it is isolated and confined in ponds or nursery, during an epidemic crisis. When outbreaks occurred in oyster beds, natural or nursery spat died in almost same proportions. In 2010, some studies conducted in Mediterranean...

Incorporation of different fatty acids, supplied as emulsions or liposomes, in the polar and neutral lipids of <i>Crassostrea gigas</i> spat OMA
Caers, M.; Coutteau, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Pacific oysters spat (<i>Crassostrea gigas</i>) were fed an algal diet (<i>Tetraselmis suecica</i>) whether or not supplemented with emulsions or liposomes rich in 18:1<i>n</i>-9, 18:2<i>n</i>-6 and 22:6<i>n</i>-3. The preferential accumulation and partitioning of the latter fatty acids between the polar and neutral lipids of <i>C. gigas</i> spat were followed. Additionally, the efficiency of emulsions and liposomes as fatty acid carriers for <i>C. gigas</i> spat were compared. The incorporation of dietary fatty acids was found to vary substantially according to the fatty acid carrier (emulsions vs. liposomes), the particular fatty acid (18:1<i>n</i>-9,...

Nursery culturing of bivalve spat in heated seawater OMA
Claus, C.; Van Holderbeke, L.; Maeckelberghe, H.; Persoone, G..
The controlled nursery culturing of mollusc spat produced to date by millions in commercial hatcheries is an intermediate step in mollusc farming which is receiving more and more attention. Different technologies for nursery culturing indoors as well as outdoors have been developed at different places. The principles are always basically the same and consist of culturing postlarvae of a few millimeters to a size of a few centimeters in densities as high as possible in specific devices containing seawater which is eventually enriched with live unicellular algae or inert foods. This paper reports on the first results obtained in Belgium in an indoor experimental nursery with spat of <i>Ostrea edulis, Crassostrea gigas</i> and <i>Venerupis...
