Manual of Marine Meteorological Observations, Ninth edition OceanDocs
The Conference of Brussels, called in 1853, was the first International Maritime Conference ever held. It sponsored the idea that governments should foster systematic weather observations on ships, and should prepare and publish charts of the prevailing winds, ocean currents, average sea and air temperatures, and tracks of dangerous storms based on the additional data. With the introduction of radio and fast ships, weather information became of vital importance to safe and efficient ship operation. Many countries began regularly scheduled weather forecasts to ships in nearby waters. Today, weather forecasts as well as charts are prepared from data collected through ship observations. Forecasts of weather and sea conditions arc prepared for ship operation,...

Instructions to the Marine Meteorological Observers of the U. S. Weather Bureau, 1st edition. OceanDocs
Page, James.
The form of weather Report at present issued to vessels by the U. S. weather Bureau is a slight modification of that devised by the U. S. Signal Service for the purpose of its series of International Simultaneous Meteorological Observations, covering the period 1878- 1887, which form in its turn superseded the once well-known Meteorological Journal. The last-mentioned form of record, which went into effect in 1876, and which was in many respects identical with that recommended by the Maritime Conference held at Brussels in 1853, contemplated that the various meteorological observations should be entered at the end of every two hours throughout the twenty-four, or a total of twelve sets of observations per day. The new form demanded, in place of this...

Standardization of aquatic bioassays: compromises between biological and economical criteria OMA
Persoone, G..
A variety of ecotoxicological methods have been worked out and are described in the scientific literature to experimentally predict the impact of chemical substances on aquatic terrestrial biota. Only during recent years have serious efforts been made at both the national and international level to select a few bioassays which should be standardized for general applicability. The choice for a standard bioassay, of the test species as well as of the criterion to assess the dose-effect relationship is a matter of the compromises which one is willing to make between the factors ecological representativeness and sensitivity on one hand, and mangeability in the laboratory and cost of the test on the other hand. This assertion is demonstrated for the aquatic...

OS PILARES DA QUALIDADE: O PROCESSO DE IMPLEMENTAÇÃO DO PROGRAMA DE QUALIDADE DO CAFÉ (PQC) AgEcon
Montagnana Vicente Leme, Paulo Henrique; Machado, Rosa Teresa Moreira.
The present study had as major objective to analyze the implementation process of the coffee quality program (CQP) and its implications on the roasted and ground coffee companies in Brazil. Firstly, the philosophy and the objectives of CQP were described in the construction of a theoretical analysis model, the “quality pillars”. The marketing strategies of thirteen roasters were analyzed. Research data were analyzed with the support of the “quality pillars” model: product quality, process quality, and the quality signal. As main results, it was possible to imply that quality was the main factor that increased the vertical coordination between the researched companies. Therefore, CQP implementation leads companies to the adoption of vertical coordination...

Nuove dinamiche nel commercio dei prodotti agroalimentari: resistenze all’adozione dell’e-commerce nelle relazioni B2B AgEcon
Pignatti, Erika; Canavari, Maurizio; Spadoni, Roberta.
Since some decades, agri-food products exchanges can be carried on using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools. Anyway, their adoption in the agri-food sector appears to be hindered, both because of consolidated dynamics in developing B2B transactions, and of the peculiarities of the agri-food products themselves. The lack of direct relationships between partner heighten problems connected with food safety assessments, and with the definition of standardized production practices able to match business partner’ needs. Standardization is the key point in the relationship between e-commerce and agri-food sector. As for some products it is possible to define standardized requirements, it is hard to find a collocation for the wide range of...

Size of samples and homogenizers during classification of damaged soybeans AGRIAMBI
Quirino,José R.; Resende,Osvaldo; Fonseca,Natalia N.; Oliveira,Daniel E. C. de; Parizzi,Fatima C.; Souza,Tiago A. de.
ABSTRACT Grain quality determination involves important stages such as collection of the representative sample, homogenization, and dilution. The interrelation among sampling, homogenization, and working sample size is essential to the reliability of the information generated. Therefore, this work aimed to analyse the performance of mechanical homogenizers used in the commercialization of grains in Brazil, as a function of the size of the working sample masses during grain classification. The samples were homogenized and diluted in Boerner, 16:1 multichannel splitter, and 4:1 multichannel splitter until reaching masses of 0.025, 0.050, 0.075, 0.100 and 0.125 kg to determine the level of damaged grains. A 3 x 4 x 5 factorial design was used, meaning three...

On the standardization of the fishing effort Acta Amazonica

In this note we demonstrate that the use of an index to standardize the fishing effort using the cpue of a standard vessel or gear is mistaken, once the cpues- catch per unit of total effort after standardization is similar to cpues - catch per unit of effort of the standard vesel or gear arbitrarily chosen.

Duplex nested-PCR for detection of small ruminant lentiviruses BJM
Marinho,Rebeca C.; Martins,Gabrielle R.; Souza,Kelma C.; Sousa,Ana Lídia M.; Silva,Sabrina Tainah C.; Nobre,Juliana A.; Teixeira,Maria F.S..
Abstract Small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLV) have high genetic variability which results in different viral strains around the world. This create a challenge to design sensible primers for molecular diagnosis in different regions. This work proposes a protocol of duplex nested-PCR for the precise diagnosis of SRLV. The technique was designed and tested with the control strains CAEV Co and MVV 1514. Then, field strains were submitted to the same protocol of duplex nested-PCR. Blood samples of sheep and goats were tested with AGID and nested PCR with specific primers for pol, gag and LTR. The AGID results showed low detection capacity of positive animals, while the nested PCR demonstrated a greater capacity of virus detection. Results demonstrated that...
