Gangnery, Aline.
The total standing stock of bivalves cultured in Thau Lagoon (France) that is mainly constituted of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, and the Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, vary between 14,000 and 20,000 tons within a year. These variations were attributed to the rearing cycle of molluscs in the lagoon but also to their growth performances. Oysters cultured in the Thau Lagoon presented the best growth rate ever reported whereas trophic conditions are low : mean concentrations in organic particulate matter and total chlorophyll a averaged 1 mg.l-1 and 1.2 µg.l-1, respectively. The development of a growth model shows that temporal pattern (i.e. seasonality) of bivalve growth is explained by water temperature and spatial pattern is...

Large-scale genetic panmixia in the blue shark ( Prionace glauca ): a single worldwide population, or a genetic lag-time effect of the “grey zone” of differentiation? ArchiMer
Bailleul, Diane; Mackenzie, Alicia; Sacchi, Olivier; Poisson, Francois; Bierne, Nicolas; Arnaud-haond, Sophie.
The blue shark Prionace glauca, among the most common and widely studied pelagic sharks, is a top predator, exhibiting the widest distribution range. However, little is known about its population structure and spatial dynamics. With an estimated removal of 10 to 20 million individuals per year by fisheries, the species is classified as “Near Threatened” by International Union for Conservation of Nature. We lack the knowledge to forecast the long-term consequences of such a huge removal on this top predator itself and on its trophic network. The genetic analysis of more than 200 samples collected at broad scale (from Mediterranean Sea, North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans) using mtDNA and nine microsatellite markers allowed to detect signatures of genetic...

Juin 2009 ArchiMer
Bordeyne, François; Robert, Stephane; Le Moine, Olivier; Leaute, Jean-pierre.
On French coast, Manila clam is a bivalve subject of a large activity recreational and professional hand harvest. Two species are represented in France, European Manila clam Ruditapes decussatus (native) and Japanese Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum (introduced). Predominance of this last species (more than 90 % of number and biomass), earn them the status of invasive species. Contrary to Arcachon bay, Pont l’Abbé River or Morbihan bay, an estimation campaign of Manila clams stock on Marennes-Oléron bay had never been carried out. The objective of this study: estimate, in number and biomass, the Manila clams stock of two areas. The first affect recreational hand harvest, on Saint-Trojan shore (0.8 km²) whereas the second scopes professional hand...

Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Pichocki-seyfried, C; Walker, P; De Montaudouin, Xavier; Palud, Cecile; Heral, Maurice.
Extensive and detailed subtidal ground mapping of the Marennes-Oleron Bay and Fouras-Aix areas was performed with a side-scan sonar. Side-scan sonographs gave a comprehensive view of sedimentological bottom environments and also allowed us to outline locations of grounds colonised by the gastropod mollusc Crepidula fornicata L. with a precise estimate of their surface. A sedimentological map of the centre of the Marennes-Oleron Bay is given, describing spatial organisation of the following four types of sediment: pure mud, fine sand, coarse sand and rocks. Crepidula beds were also recognised on sonographs and were estimated to cover 181 hectares in the Fouras-Aix area and 615 hectares within the Marennes-Oleron Bay. Standard sampling methods were then...

ArchiMer
Foucher, Eric.
The CORE 3Ps scallop stocks (Icelandic scallop Chlamys islandica and Giant scallop Placopecten magellanicus) and Sea cucumber (Cucumaria frondosa) stock were assessed in August 2017 in French-Canadian waters southwest of the Saint-Pierre and Miquelon archipelago on the one hand, and in the southern part of the French EEZ known as “Corridor” on the other. For this purpose, a scientific survey, based on a stratified random sampling plan in the CORE area and systematic sampling plan in the French Corridor was conducted onboard S/V Antéa, research vessel of the French Oceanographic Fleet. Although difficult weather conditions affected the survey, 80 sampling points were completed. The analysis of these data shows a slight decrease in the exploitable biomass of...

A spatial sampling was carried out for stock assessment of sea urchin P. lividus throughout the Basque coast. A sampling, over the year, was conducted to study the reproductive cycle. This work took place over 2013 and 2014. Reproduction occurs once in spring, between May and August 2014. Among factors affecting the release of eggs, salinity, temperature and hydrodynamics show a significant inter-annual variability in the Basque coast. Thus, the period set in 2014, may fluctuate between years. For the stock, the results showed that 11.85 (+/-0.32) million individuals of harvestable biomass for 724 tones (+/- 137). Stock is spread over the entire surveyed area density and biomass decrease rapidly with depth, individuals are mainly located between 0 and 5 m....

COMOR 32 (8-23 juillet 2002) ArchiMer
Foucher, Eric.
Scientific scallop surveys called COMOR are carried out in the bay of Seine since 1976. Results are used by fishermen’ associations and by fishing administration to lead management measures. In this report, the scientific results of the survey COMOR 32 realised in July 2002 are described. Abundance and growth indices for scallop, by age and area, are presented. During these surveys, data about most abundant benthic species are also collected since 1998. A first assessment with five years data is made here. A global descriptive analysis is undertaken about all the species present on scallops grounds. A special zoom is applied on both species whitch could be exploited (whelk Buccinum undatum and queen scallop Aequipecten opercularis) and three competitive...

Goulletquer, Philippe; Joly, Jean-pierre; Kopp, Joel; Legagneur, Eric; Moriceau, Jacques; Ruelle, Francois.

THE QUESTIONABLE NECESSITY OF CHANGING MAIZE INTERVENTION AgEcon
Jancsok, Zsuzsanna; Kato, Norbert; Nogradi, J.; Cseke, Z..
The EU took clear steps to suppress and abandon the intervention of maize in 2006. Originally the measure should have been revised in the course of the “Health Check”. But the European Commission (EC) rendered the minimal quality requirement for maize stricter in the intervention period starting 1 November 2006. Later the EC proposed to finish the intervention of maize. According to that decision the intervention of maize exists in the marketing year of 2007/08 and 2008/09 with a quantity limitation but it finishes in the marketing year of 2009/10. The EC argues for the abandonment of maize intervention, because, intervention stocks of cereals have increased significantly after the accession of the 10 new member states (EU-10), and the balance of the maize...

Regulating Stock Externalities Under Uncertainty AgEcon
Newell, Richard G.; Pizer, William A..
Using a simple analytical model incorporating benefits of a stock, costs of adjusting the stock, and uncertainty in costs, we uncover several important principles governing the choice of price-based policies (e.g., taxes) relative to quantity-based policies (e.g., tradable permits) for controlling stock externalities. Applied to the problem of greenhouse gases and climate change, we find that a price-based instrument generates several times the expected net benefits of a quantity instrument. As in Weitzman (1974), the relative slopes of the marginal benefits and costs of controlling the externality continue to be critical determinants of the efficiency of prices relative to quantities, with flatter marginal benefits and steeper marginal costs favoring...

Executive Compensation: Facts AgEcon
Clementi, Gian Luca; Cooley, Thomas.
In this paper we describe the important features of executive compensation in the US from 1993 to 2006. Some confirm what has been found for earlier periods and some are novel. Notable facts are that: the compensation distribution is highly skewed; each year, a sizeable fraction of chief executives lose money; the use of security grants has increased over time; the income accruing to CEOs from the sale of stock increased; regardless of the measure we adopt, compensation responds strongly to innovations in shareholder wealth; measured as dollar changes in compensation, incentives have strengthened over time, measured as percentage changes in wealth, they have not changed in any appreciable way.

Bras. Zool.
Santos Filho,Leocy C. dos; Batista,Vandick da S..
The matrinxã, Brycon amazonicus (Spix & Agassiz, 1829) is one of the most important fishery resources of the Amazonas state. Its population dynamics in Central Amazon was analyzed based on total landing and biometry data registered in the main landing port of Manaus, between 1994 and 2002. Growth and mortality rates were estimated separately for the rivers Purus, Madeira and Solimões. Differences in size structure and growth curves suggest that different population units exist among these rivers, requiring individualized evaluation and fisheries management strategies. The analysis of the yield per recruit does not indicate overexploitation. However, the highest relative exploitation rate was observed in the Madeira river. The suggested management...
