Leaf surfaces of Gomphrena spp. (Amaranthaceae) from Cerrado biome Biocell
Carvalho,Suzane Margaret Fank-de-; Gomes,Misléia Rodrigues de Aguiar; Silva,Pedro Ítalo Tanno; Báo,Sônia Nair.
The leaf structure and micromorphology characterize plant species and reflex its interactions with the environment. Leaf epidermis sculptures aid high transpiration plants on light reflection. The form and distribution of epicuticular wax crystalloids are important to characterize the surface. Aiming to know the micromorphology and the ultrastructure of G. arborescens, G. pohlii and G. virgata, leaves of these Cerrado native species were collected in Brasília, Distrito Federal, Brazil, at the Olympic Center of the Universidade de Brasília and at Reserva Ecológica do Roncador. Leaves of G. globosa, an Indian native species, were also studied for comparison. Leaves were fractionated, fixed and treated for observation under optical and scanning electron...

Epidermal characteristics of toxic plants for cattle from the Salado River basin (Buenos Aires, Argentina) Boletín de la Sociedad
Freire,Susana E.; Arambarri,Ana M.; Bayón,Néstor D.; Sancho,Gisela; Urtubey,Estrella; Monti,Claudia; Novoa,María C.; Colares,Marta N..
One hundred and eighty species belonging to 41 families inhabiting the Salado River Basin of the province of Buenos Aires (Argentina) were previously reported to be toxic for cattle. The purpose of this study was to provide a tool to distinguish the taxa when the plant material is desintegrated. In this way, an approach to the identification of these taxa through leaf epidermal features (anticlinal epidermal cell wall patterns, cuticular ornamentation, stomata, and hair types) is performed. A key to the 180 species as well as illustrations of diagnostic characters are given.

Stomatal distribution, stomatal density and daily leaf movement in Acacia aroma (Leguminosae) Boletín de la Sociedad
Hernández,Marcelo P.; ArambarriI,Ana M..
Acacia aroma Gillies ex Hook. & Arn. grows in the Chacoan and Yungas Biogeographic Provinces, Argentina. It has numerous medicinal applications, sweet and edible fruits, and it may be used as forage. The objective of the present contribution was to analyse the stomatal distribution and stomatal density on the secondary leaflet surfaces, in different parts of the leaf, and at different tree crown levels, establishing the leaf movement and environmental condition relationships. The work was performed with fresh material and herbarium specimens, using conventional anatomical techniques. Stomatal distribution on the secondary leaflet surfaces was established, and differences in stomatal density among basal, medium and apical leaflets were found. A...

Plant cells in the context of climate change BABT
Machado,Marcelo Rubens.
Global warming and its origins triggered the beginning to considerable discussion in the last century. Studies of climate models presented in multidisciplinary scientific reports suggest that anthropogenic activities, particularly the emission of gases from the greenhouse effect, are greatly responsible for the current climate changes. The increase of carbon dioxide (CO2) atmospheric concentration has been in discussion in the news, scientific meetings and in public policy debates in several countries. Apart from its impact on global warming, the rising atmospheric CO2 has alerted the scientific community to the need to investigate any morpho-physiological alterations in the plants, given their direct influence on photosynthesis. This article aims to...

Leaf surface characters applied to Lauraceae taxonomy in a Seasonal Forest of Southern Brazil BABT
Ceolin,Guilherme Bordignon; Rosito,Jumaida Maria; Canto-Dorow,Thais Scotti do.
The goal of this work was to test if the macro and micro morphological analysis of the leaf surface could provide vegetative diagnostic characters for some of the most common Lauraceae species in Southern Brazilian Seasonal Forests. The leaf printing technique with universal instantaneous adhesive was used for the epidermical microscopical analysis and external macroscospical analyses of leave were made. Microscopic evaluation revealed the visibility and contours of anticlinal walls of epidermical cell and stomata and shape of guard-cells. Macroscopic evaluation showed the absence or presence of characters such as hairiness, domatia and scents. The results showed that analyzed characters, together with other diagnostic characteristics, could contribute in...

Leaf anatomy changes related to physiological adaptations to flooding in Amazonian tree species Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Herrera,Ana; Escala,Marcia; Rengifo,Elizabeth.
In trees of the seasonally flooded forest of the Mapire River in Venezuela, early flooding induces a reversible diminution in leaf conductance and photosynthetic rate. With the aim of finding an anatomical explanation for the observed responses of leaf gas exchange, the characteristics of emerged leaves developed under drainage or after three months of flooding were examined in the tree species Acosmium nitens, Campsiandra laurifolia, Duroia fusifera, Eschweilera tenuifolia, Pouteria orinocoensis and Symmeria paniculata and in leaves developed only under flooding in Inga spuria and Tachigali davidsei. Anatomy was remarkably similar among species and families and consisted of a bi-layered palisade parenchyma, a 5-6-cell-thick spongy parenchyma and large...

Transpiration, leaf diffusive conductance, and atmospheric water demand relationship in an irrigated acid lime orchard Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Angelocci,Luiz Roberto; Marin,Fábio Ricardo; Oliveira,Ricardo Ferraz de; Righi,Evandro Zanini.
Leaf vapor diffusive conductance (gl) and transpiration (T) measurements in an irrigated orchard of the acid lime "Tahiti" were carried out in a subtropical climatic condition in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Measurements were made using steady-state null-balance porometers and were taken throughout the day, on several occasions from February to November, 1998. During September and October, measurements were performed on exposed and shaded young and fully expanded leaves, as well as on old leaves inside the tree canopy. The old leaves showed lower values of gl and T when compared to the other groups. In the other months, measurements were taken only with exposed and shaded fully expanded leaves. The highest values of gl and T were obtained from February...

CO2 assimilation, photosynthetic light response curves, and water relations of 'Pêra' sweet orange plants infected with Xylella fastidiosa Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Habermann,Gustavo; Machado,Eduardo Caruso; Rodrigues,João Domingos; Medina,Camilo Lázaro.
Plants with citrus variegated chlorosis (CVC), a disease caused by the xylem-limited bacteria Xylella fastidiosa, have leaves with water deficiency symptoms and are associated with decreases on the net photosynthesis and transpiration rates. Using healthy and CVC-affected 'Pêra' sweet orange plants on 'Rangpur' lime rootstock, the leaf gas exchange variables were measured with an open-gas portable photosynthesis system. All plants were watered and the leaf water potential (Yw) was measured by isopiestic thermocouple psychrometric technique. The net photosynthesis (A) vs. internal leaf CO2 concentration (A/Ci curves) was analyzed. The relative effect of stomatal resistance on photosynthesis (S%) and the estimation of carboxylation efficiency were...

Comparative stomatal conductance and chlorophyll a fluorescence in leaves vs. fruits of the cerrado legume tree, Dalbergia miscolobium Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Lemos Filho,José Pires de; Isaias,Rosy Mary dos Santos.
The aim of this study was to compare water vapor conductance and chlorophyll a fluorescence between leaflets and fruits of Dalbergia miscolobium, the Jacaranda tree. The frequency of stomata on the leaflets was 20 times higher than that observed on the fruits, and this was related with the lower conductance of the fruits in comparison with the leaflets. The potential quantum yield of PSII (Fv /Fmax) was significantly lower in fruits than in leaflets. The Fv /Fmax values for leaflets increased to over 0.8 during the afternoon, indicating the occurrence of dynamic photoinhibition. In contrast, Fv /Fmax values for fruits remained low even at early morning, indicating the occurrence of chronic photoinhibition. The maximum values of effective quantum yield...

Physiological characteristics of cassava tolerance to prolonged drought in the tropics: implications for breeding cultivars adapted to seasonally dry and semiarid environments Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
El-Sharkawy,Mabrouk A..
The paper summarizes research conducted at International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) on responses of cassava to extended water shortages in the field aided by modern gas-exchange and water-relation techniques as well as biochemical assays. The aim of the research was to coordinate basic and applied aspects of crop physiology into a breeding strategy with a multidisciplinary approach. Several physiological characteristics/traits and mechanisms underpinning tolerance of cassava to drought were elucidated using a large number of genotypes from the CIAT core germplasm collection grown in various locations representing ecozones where cassava is cultivated. Most notable among these characteristics are the high photosynthetic capacity of cassava leaves...

Differential capacity of nitrogen assimilation between apical and basal leaf portions of a tank epiphytic bromeliad Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Takahashi,Cassia A.; Ceccantini,Gregório C.T.; Mercier,Helenice.
The leaf is the main organ of the vegetative body of tank epiphytic bromeliads, which may be subdivided into apical and basal parts. Little is known about the existence of morphological, anatomical or physiological differences between these two leaf portions. The objective of this study was to verify the existence of a differential capacity to assimilate nitrogen from urea between basal and apical leaf portions of Vriesea gigantea, a tank epiphytic bromeliad. Plants were cultivated in vitro in the presence of 5 mM urea for 15 days. During this period, the activities of the enzymes glutamine synthetase (GS, EC 6.3.1.2) and NADH-dependent glutamate dehydrogenase (NADH-GDH, EC 1.4.1.2) were quantified, as well as the densities of trichomes and stomata found...

Effects of changes in the photosynthetic photon flux density on net gas exchange of Citrus limon and Nicotiana tabacum Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Pimentel,Carlos; Ribeiro,Rafael Vasconcelos; Santos,Mauro Guida dos; Oliveira,Ricardo Ferraz de; Machado,Eduardo Caruso.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of changes in the photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) on net gas exchange of Citrus limon, a woody species, and Nicotiana tabacum, an herbaceous species. When PPFD was increased from 50 to 350 mumol.m-2.s-1 and returned to 50 mumol.m-2.s-1 after 60 min, the CO2 assimilation rate (A) increased and stabilized after 15 min in both species. Stomatal conductance (g s), however, continued to increase. After returning to low PPFD, A immediately diminished to a low value for both lemon and tobacco. Stomatal conductance of lemon diminished slowly over 60 min, whereas g s for tobacco took only 15 min to decrease. This difference in behavior is probably due to over-sensitivity of stomata of woody species,...

Leaf Surface Scanning Electron Microscopy of 16 Mulberry Genotypes (Morus spp.) with Respect to their Feeding Value in Silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) Rearing Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Singhal,B.K; Baqual,M.F; Khan,M.A; Bindroo,B.B; Dhar,A.
Mulberry (Morus spp.) is the only silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) food plant. In Indian sub tropics, S-146 is the only popular and ruling mulberry genotype for silkworm rearing. As a result, mulberry leaf availability is always the limiting factor, and therefore, sub tropics are contributing less than 1% of the country’s total silk production compared with more than 60% under tropical conditions. Besides climatic conditions, this is due to a very limited number of mulberry genotypes available in this region for silkworm rearing. However, in the mean time, 15 mulberry genotypes viz. ‘Tr-10’,‘Chinese White’,‘K-2’,‘Sujanpur...
