Temperature affects undoubtedly the 3 working sites where, systematically, the observation of the first abnormal mortalities coincides with a water temperature of around 19°C. The nature of the processes implied could have a "cumulative" effect, affecting the physiology (this phenomenon has been observed with other marine species) or a "threshold" effect, acting only as a trigger. The question has not been answered yet. The kinetics of the thermic evolution around the mortality period has to be studied in depth in order to understand if this temperature acts more as an "associated factor", during a chronic stress period, or during an acute stress, as suggested by the "on-bottom/off bottom" mortality model of the Marennes Oléron Bay [12].

Etude de la charge énergétique adénylique sur deux espèces aquacoles les crustacés Penaeus stylirostris et Penaeus vannamei et l'huître perlière Pinctada margaritifera ArchiMer

La charge énergétique adénylique (CEA) est le reflet de l'énergie disponible dans les cellules. Ses variations ont été recherchées comme indice physiologique pour détecter un stress chez les crevettes péneides P.  vannamei et P. stylirosrtis et chez l' huître perlière Pinctada margaririfera. L'étude a porté dans un premier temps, sur la recherche des conditions optimales de préparation des échantillons aussi bien pour les crevettes que pour la nacre et dans un second temps sur des variations dues aux stress. La plupart des stress induits (hypoxie, vibriose) ne provoquent pas de variations significatives de la charge énergétique des crevettes p>0.05. Chez l'huître perlière une émersion à 20°C, 30°C et 40°C(p <0.05) ou une baisse de salinité ( 10%o)...

In 2008, we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, this topic has received increasing attention, and many scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Thus, it is important to formulate on a regular basis updated guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Characterization and variations of organic parameters in teleost fish endolymph during day-night cycle, starvation and stress conditions ArchiMer

The aim of the present work was to examine the modifications of the organic composition of fish endolymph under environmental conditions (day-night cycle, starvation and Cl-2-Stress) known to modify otolith growth. Endolymph electrophoretic patterns were compared. An antibody raised against the trout otolith organic matrix allowed examining the variations of organic matrix precursors in the endolymph under the above conditions. Western blot analysis showed bands around 60-80 kDa. A 50% decrease of immunolabelling was observed during the night whereas increases were seen after starvation (factor 3) or stress (factor 2) suggesting that these variations could be related to the organic matrix deposit. In aquaculture management it is important to establish objective criteria to assess health and welfare of the fish. Here we show that European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) confronted with husbandry-associated stress (tank cleaning, i.e. scrubbing, and water temperature variation) during early life stages show poorer survival and disease resistance as juveniles. Effects of hypoxia and elevated ammonia concentration on the viability of red snapper embryos and early larvae ArchiMer

The effects of hypoxic conditions and elevated ammonia concentrations on the viability of embryos and newly hatched larvae of the red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) were investigated. In all experiments, tested levels of hypoxia or ammonia concentrations were applied to embryos and unfed newly hatched larvae from three different spawns. Exposures began at 1 h post fertilization (pf) and lasted until all individuals in a group had expired. Survival rates were monitored daily in duplicates for each spawn in each treatment. Fertilized eggs exposed to 2 mg L− 1 dissolved oxygen (29% saturation) showed complete mortality before hatch while 81% of embryos in control groups (> 85% saturation) hatched and subsequently maintained high survival until 5 days pf....

Expériences 97 sur l'influence des sédiments du bassin d'élevage sur la physiologie de Penaeus stylirostris ArchiMer

Les crevettes pénéides maintenues captives dans des cages posées sur le fond des bassins d'élevage subissent un stress dû au sédiment qui peut être évalué par la comparaison entre la valeur de la pression osmotique de leur hémolymphe et celle des crevettes libres du même bassin. Les objectifs des travaux réalisés à la station de Saint-Vincent (SASV, Nouvelle Calédonie) étaient de confirmer la variabilité spatiale de l'intensité du stress et de rechercher dans les sédiments un indicateur physique ou chimique corrélé à ce stress. Des lots de 25 à 30 crevettes de 13,2g, pêchées à l'épervier, ont été placés dans des cages de grillage métallique déposées en 12 points du bassin d'élevage. The prawn Penaeus stylirostris (Stimpson), when fed for 28 days with n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA)-enriched feed pellets, demonstrated an enhanced resistance to variations in environmental parameters (a decrease in temperature and salinity over a 4-day period from 28 degreesC to 17 degreesC and from 35 parts per thousand to 10 parts per thousand respectively) and an improvement in their immune defence potential, i.e. increased agglutination titre of plasma and increased respiratory burst of haemocytes.

Evaluation des conséquences d'une situation hypoxique simulée sur la Capacité Osmorégulatrice des crevettes d'élevage, Penaeus stylirostris et Penaeus vannamei ArchiMer

Les résultats exposés dans ce rapport apportent des informations sur la Capacité Osmorégulatrice des crevettes d'élevage, Penaeus stylirostris et P. vannamei, face à un abaissement de l'oxygénation ambiante. Ces résultats s'appliquent à des juvéniles placés dans des conditions optimum en laboratoire mais à niveau métabolique bas : animaux à jeun, en stade d' intermue C, adaptés après dissipation du stress induit par la pêche et le transfert dans un nouvel environnement. Les mesures ont confirmé que les crevettes présentent une zone d'indépendance osmorégulatrice au-dessus de 3 mg O2.11 et· une zone de dépendance osmorégulatrice qui commence au-dessous de cette valeur. Two stress gradients were applied in this study, a short acute desiccation stress and a long-term density stress. This model is based on changes in intracellular metabolisable components depending an physiological responses of the cell when subjected to nutrient starvation, salinity stress and solar radiation. Summer mortality of Pacific oysters is known in several countries. However no specific pathogen has been systematically associated with this phenomenon. A complex combination of environmental and biological parameters has been suggested as the cause and is now starting to be identified. Physiological response of the blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris to short-term confinement on a pond bottom ArchiMer

The blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris was exposed to pond sediment for 48 h and its physiological response was studied in relation to molt stage. Shrimp were maintained in cages within a semi-intensive pond after 4 months of rearing. Hypoosmoregulatory capacity (hypo-OC), magnesium ions (Mg ions), glucose, total proteins and oxyhaemocyanin were assayed in haemolymph. An increase of 370% to 500% in Mg ions concentration and 200% to 266% in glucose concentration, and a decrease in hypo-OC in shrimp maintained close to the centre of the pond indicated a short-term stress response in all molt stages. Influence of sediment characteristics on shrimp physiology: pH as principal effect ArchiMer

Penaeid shrimp reared in earthen ponds are exposed to sediment, which can, in some instances, induce a stress. In seawater, the osmoregulatory capacity (hyporegulation) is a useful tool to compare the physiological condition of shrimp exposed to various stressors. By keeping some shrimp in cages at different locations of a single pond heterogeneous in terms of sediment quality, it was possible, using osmotic pressure (OP), to identify some locations where the stress was maximum and some others where it was minimum. The influence of the soil quality of culture pond on the physiological state of Penaeus stylirostris reared in earthen shrimp pond in New Caledonia was investigated by the measurement of the osmoregulatory capacity and magnesium hemolymph concentration of samples of 20 of these shrimp captured in the pond and maintained for 24 or 48h in cages laid on the bottom. A first experiment was affected by the occurrence of a pathology caused by Vibrio penaeicida probably due to initial handling stress. The second experiment showed that the osmoregulatory capacity is depresssed as a function of the soil quality : the more it is reduced the more the depression is important.
