New Insights Into Biomphalysin Gene Family Diversification in the Vector Snail Biomphalaria glabrata ArchiMer
Pinaud, Silvain; Tetreau, Guillaume; Poteaux, Pierre; Galinier, Richard; Chaparro, Cristian; Lassalle, Damien; Portet, Anaïs; Simphor, Elodie; Gourbal, Benjamin; Duval, David.
Aerolysins initially characterized as virulence factors in bacteria are increasingly found in massive genome and transcriptome sequencing data from metazoans. Horizontal gene transfer has been demonstrated as the main way of aerolysin-related toxins acquisition in metazoans. However, only few studies have focused on their potential biological functions in such organisms. Herein, we present an extensive characterization of a multigene family encoding aerolysins - named biomphalysin - in Biomphalaria glabrata snail, the intermediate host of the trematode Schistosoma mansoni. Our results highlight that duplication and domestication of an acquired bacterial toxin gene in the snail genome result in the acquisition of a novel and diversified toxin family....

Structural analysis of RF sputtered Ge-Sb-Se thin films by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies ArchiMer
Baudet, E.; Cardinaud, C.; Girard, A.; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Michel, K.; Bureau, B.; Nazabal, V..
Chalcogenide thin films (GeSe2)100 − x(Sb2Se3)x (with x = 10 and 50) were deposited by Radio-frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering. In order to study the impact of Ar pressure on the structure and the composition of selenide thin films structural properties of thin films and targets were investigated by means of Raman scattering spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Under low pressure (5 · 10− 3 mbar), the increase of wrong bonds like Ge(Sb)-Ge(Sb) was confirmed by Raman and also XPS for both composition. The observed structural changes with Ar pressure are linked with modification of the composition of the selenide films analyzed by EDS and XPS. Furthermore for higher Ar pressure (5 · 10− 2 mbar), RF sputtered thin film and target...

Comment protéger les acides gras polyinsaturés à longues chaînes oméga 3 (AGPI -- LC ω3) vis-à-vis de l’oxydation ? ArchiMer
Genot, Claude; Eymard, Sylvie; Viau, Michèle.
Increase the consumption of long-chain omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC ω3 PUFA) is highly recommended for their health benefits. However, these fatty acids are very prone to oxidation, which can impair sensory, nutritional and functional properties of foods. In this paper the various ways that increase LC ω3 PUFA stability during processing and storage of food products are reviewed. To efficiently protect LC ω3 PUFA during processing and storage of foods, a combined strategy, taking into account both the matrix and the process should be undertaken. First the quality of the raw materials should be rigorously controlled by, for example, increasing contents of in situ antioxidants and decreasing length of storage. Then, during processing and storage...

Etude d'oligosaccharides bioactifs issus d'exopolysaccharides bactériens : obtention, caractérisation et relation structure/fonction ArchiMer
Roger, Olivier.
Unusual exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced by heterotrophic aerobic and mesophilic bacteria originating from hydrothermal vent, were reviewed as a new source of polysaccharidic structures endowed with innovative biological properties. The first step of this study was the structure determination of the EPS GY785, synthesized by Alteromonas infernus. A highly branched nonasaccharidic repetitive unit was identified using chemical modifications and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. This 106 g/mol polysaccharide is composed of glucose, galactose, glucuronic acid, galacturonic acid, and contains a single branched ramification and one sulphate group. The second step was the preparation of low molecular weight bioactive polysaccharides presenting interest...

The evolution of composite materials in submarine structures. ArchiMer
Lemiere, Y.
Since the sixties, the amount of composite structures on submarines has increased continuously. The main reasons are their low apparent weight in water, good behaviour in a marine environment, excellent mechanical properties and acoustic transparency. The new applications required the use of prepreg. Relevant processes had to be adapted to the large dimensions and thickness of the structures. Future applications will be concerned with both structures and internal equipment. A lively debate is now in progress over whether the successor to high yield strength steels for hull structures will be titanium or composite materials.

Mantle histology, histochemistry and ultrastructure of the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera (L.) ArchiMer
Jabbour-zahab, Roula; Chagot, Dominique; Blanc, François; Grizel, Henri.
The edge and isthmus of the mantle of Pinctada margaritifera (Mollusc, Bivalvia) were studied using light and electron microscopy from a morphological and histochemical point of view. Six areas with several subareas were differentiated in the mantle edge. One of these areas is similar to the epithelium isthmus, Trials to elucidate the nature of the pigment responsible for the black colour of the shell and pearl indicate a melanin-like material. Possible functions of the distinctive epithelial areas in Pinctada margartifera mantle are discussed according to available data on the secretion of organic matrix of the shell, protein sclerotization and deposition of crystals in some pearl-forming molluscs. Three different epithelial areas in the outer mantle edge...

Sex Variation in Occurrence of Myocardium in Human Mitral Valve Cusps International Journal of Morphology
Gatonga,P; Odula,P. O; Saidi,H; Mandela,P.
Mitral valve cusps consist mainly of connective tissue and myocardium. Connective tissue fibres within the cusps have been demonstrated to exhibit sex variations in organisation. Mitral prolapse, a disease attributed to defects within the cusps occurs more commonly in females. Sex variations in valvular myocardium however remain to be studied. Possible variations in its organisation may enhance understanding of sex differences in prevalence of mitral prolapse. The aim of this study was to determine anatomical variations of mitral valvular myocardium by sex; by mean a comparative cross-sectional study. A total of 48 (27 male and 21 female) adult heart specimens obtained during autopsy at Nairobi City and Chiromo mortuaries after ethical approval were used....

Estrutura Conduta e Desempenho da Produção das Vinícolas Gaúchas: Período 1989 a 2006 AgEcon
Dias, Marcelo Fernandes Pacheco; Santos Junior, Silvio; Padula, Antonio Domingos.

RE-ENGINEERING THE WELFARE SYSTEM - A STUDY OF ADMINISTRATIVE CHANGES TO THE FOOD STAMP PROGRAM: FINAL REPORT AgEcon
Bell, Loren; Pachikara, Susan; Williams, Susan Schreiber; Gabor, Vivian.
All States in a recent study undertook at least one "re-engineering" activity in their Food Stamp Programs (FSPs) as a result of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA). In addition, 35 States implemented changes in 3 or more re-engineering categories, while 24 States planned changes for fiscal year (FY) 2000 in 2 or more categories. PRWORA dramatically changed the systems that provide cash assistance and food stamps to low-income Americans. Along with mandatory changes in food stamp eligibility, States were given greater flexibility to administer their programs to meet their unique needs. While States had begun changing the way program services were delivered before passage of welfare reform legislation, PRWORA...

Strategic models, ownership and organisational changes in the Hungarian food industry AgEcon
Kapronczai, Istvan.
Based on statistical analyses of the financial data, the study showed that organisational instability characterised the period under examination. On average, change of ownership or of management, or even mergers or de-mergers occurred every 3.7 years. The “stable” periods are too short for implementing corporate activities based on an elaborated strategy, granting success both in the medium and long term. We have established the strategic models by which the enterprises could be ranked following the change of ownership or management. From among the four types, the asset depleting and the surviving strategies are definitely disadvantageous, but they accounted for more than 56% of the cases. The frequency of occurrence of the negative strategic models...

Structural Change and Public Policies in EU Agriculture: An Overview AgEcon
Blandford, David; Hill, Berkeley.
Substantial structural change is taking place in EU agriculture. Average farm size is increasing and labour is continuing to move out of the sector. Slow growth in food demand and the effects of technological change on supply are likely to exert downward pressure on real agricultural prices. Within this context, policies at the EU and national levels will have mixed effects on economic adaptation and structural change. There is considerable uncertainty about the long-run viability of the so-called European model of agriculture, particularly given the intensification of pressures for change through economic globalisation.

EFFECTS OF FEDERAL TAX POLICY ON AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Durst, Ron L.; Monke, James D..
This report analyzes the effects of the current Federal tax code on farming and evaluates tax proposals to assist beginning farmers. Investment, management, and production decisions in agriculture continue to be influenced by Federal tax laws. Farmers continue to benefit from both Federal income and estate tax policies targeted to agriculture. These provisions exert upward pressure on farmland values and help support ongoing trends that increase the number of very small and large farms. However, the influence of the current tax structure with lower marginal tax rates and a broader income base is less than in earlier decades and may be small relative to government farm programs. Tax proposals to assist beginning farmers would likely increase the...
