Management of private tubewells in a conjunctive use environment: a case study in the Mananwala Distributary Command Area, Punjab, Pakistan AgEcon

This paper analyzes the tubewell data collected by IIMI-Pakistan over a period of 4 years. While the main emphasis remains on the operation of private tubewells, public tubewells and canal water supplies are included in the analyses to give a more comprehensive picture of the conjunctive use environment, a characteristic of most of the irrigated areas of the Punjab, Pakistan.

Planning groundwater use for sustainable rural development AgEcon
International Water Management Institute (IWMI).
Groundwater use is rapidly increasing in Sri Lanka, bringing several benefits to small farmers—by allowing them to grow more crops, minimize the impact of droughts, and profit from selling high-value produce. But how can this be sustained? Lessons learned from other countries with longer histories of groundwater use can help policymakers, planners, and development organizations avoid the pitfalls and dangers of indiscriminate use, and capture the benefits that groundwater can bring.

Optimal Management of a Potential Invader: The Case of Zebra Mussels in Florida AgEcon

Dominant users of Lake Okeechobee water resources are agricultural producers and recreational anglers. These uses will be directly affected, should the lake become infested with zebra mussels. We employ a probabilistic bioeconomic simulation model to estimate the potential impact of zebra mussels on consumptive water uses, recreational angling, and wetland ecosystem services under alternative public management scenarios. Without public management, the expected net economic impact from zebra mussels is - $244.1 million over 20 years. Public investment in prevention and eradication will yield a net expected gain of +$188.7 million, a superior strategy to either prevention or eradication alone.

Water scarcity and the role of storage in development AgEcon

Of the four major ways of storing water -in the soil profile, in underground aquifers, in small reservoirs, and in large reservoirs behind dams-the first is possible only for relatively short periods of time. In this paper, the authors concentrate on the three kinds of long-term technologies, and compare the hydrological, operational, economic and environmental aspects of each.

Cost-benefit analysis of abatement measures for nutrient emission from agriculture AgEcon

In intensive animal husbandry areas surface water N and P concentrations often remain too high. The Water Framework Directive calls for additional nutrient emission abatement measures. Therefore, costs and benefits for possible agricultural measures in Flanders were first analysed in terms of soil balance surplus. Finally, abatement measures for agriculture, households and industry were set off against each other and ranked according to their cost-efficiency by the Environmental Costing Model. Increased dairy cattle efficiency, winter cover crops and increased pig feed efficiency turn out very cost efficient. Other agricultural measures are less cost efficient than for instance collective treatment for households and industry.

Optimal investment in prevention and control of a potential invader: the case of zebra mussels in Florida waterways AgEcon

The probability of a severe infestation ranges from 2% to 98% depending on investment in monitoring, prevention, and response technology. Given the estimated potential for economic damages, preliminary results indicate that prudent investment in prevention and early response net a present value net return of $10 million over 20 years.

Chemical composition of phytoplankton from the estuaries of Eastern Amazonia Acta Amazonica

Phytoplankton is important bioindicator of chemical and biological modifications of natural ecosystems. The objective of this study was to determine the total chemical composition of the phytoplankton of the Pará and Mocajuba estuaries on the eastern coast of the Amazon region in the Brazilian state of Pará. The chemical composition of the surface water, bottom sediments (total sample and bioavailable fraction), and the phytoplankton were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Phytoplankton contained high concentrations of Ca, P, Mn, Fe, Zn, Al, Ba, and Pb. ABSTRACT Organic compost from biomass residues constitutes a viable alternative for partial or total replacement of mineral fertilizers for growing vegetables. This study evaluated the effects of compost on the water quality of a stream used mainly for irrigation of agricultural crops cultivated in nearby soil that has been treated with organic compost produced by carcasses, animal and vegetable waste for the last ten years.
