The irrigated rice production can be limited by various phytopathogenic agents, including root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.). Thus, the aim of this research was to check the host suitability of plant species most often found off-season and during rice cultivation, to root-knot nematode Meloidogyne graminicola, under two irrigation managements. Two experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design. In the first experiment seven plant species that occur in an area of rice cultivation, in fallow, off-season were evaluated. For the second experiment nine weed species infesting the irrigated rice culture were tested in rainfed and flooding conditions. The sixteen species, kept individually in pots with sterilized substrate, were inoculated with... |

ABSTRACT Weeds can be hosts of root-lesion nematode (Pratylenchus spp.), maintaining or increasing their population in the soil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the reaction of 25 weeds species to the nematode Pratylenchus zeae. The weed plants were individually inoculated with 1,000 individuals of P. zeae and maintained in a greenhouse for 90 days. After this period, eggs and nematodes were extracted, quantified, and the reproduction factor (RF = final population/initial population) was calculated. All tested weeds were susceptible (RF>1) to P. zeae, and the species Brachiaria decumbens, Rhynchelytrum repens, Digitaria insularis, D. horizontalis, B. brizantha were the most susceptible to this parasite. |

ABSTRACT The recent introduction of Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) in Brazilian agricultural areas may promote several changes on weed management, especially in no-till systems and in glyphosate-resistant crops, since glyphosate-resistant biotypes of A. palmerihave been frequently selected in other countries. Therefore, this research was developed in order to evaluate the glyphosate susceptibility of a Palmer amaranth biotype recently identified in the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil. For this purpose, glyphosate susceptibility of three Amaranthusbiotypes was compared: A.hybridus var. patulus, collected in the State of Rio Grande do Sul - Brazil; A.hybridus var. patulus, collected in the State of São Paulo - Brazil; and A.palmeri, collected in the State... |

This study aimed at evaluating the susceptibility of commercial laying hens to Salmonella Gallinarum (SG). Two experiments were carried using a mutant strain of Salmonella Gallinarum resistant to nalidix acid (SGNALr). In the first trial, the resistance of birds was evaluated based on clinical signs, faecal shedding, and mortality. It was carried out with six lines of commercial layers being three light white layers, considered to be resistant to SG (W1, W2, W3), and three semi-heavy brown varieties (B1, B2, B3), considered susceptible to SG. Each group contained 15 one-day-old birds. Hens were inoculated in the crop at 5 days of age with 0.2 mL of SGNALr neat culture. In addition, to each brown variety, a new group of 15 birds was challenged with 0.2mL of... |

Abstract Oriental fruit moth (Grapholita molesta) is the most important pest of apple orchards in Brazil. For many years, insecticides have been the only tool used for its control. The aim of this work was to characterize the management of apple orchards by the system for Assessment of Environment Impact of Agricultural Technology Innovations (AMBITEC-AGRO) and to relate it with the resistance status of G. molesta populations. Insecticide resistance was estimated by toxicology and enzymatic activities of glutathione S-transferase (GST), esterases (a-ß EST), and acetylcholinesterase (AChE). The phytosanitary strategies adopted by the four apple production orchards in southern Brazil were analyzed in: Vacaria (RS population), Fraiburgo (SC1 population), São... |

The susceptibility of the five cell lines - IB-RS-2, RK-13, Vero, BHK-21, CER - to reovirus S1133 and infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV vaccine GBV-8 strain) was studied to better define satisfactory and sensitive cell culture systems. Cultures were compared for presence of CPE, virus titers and detection of viral RNA. CPE and viral RNA were detected in CER and BHK-21 cells after reovirus inoculation and in RK-13 cell line after IBDV inoculation and with high virus titers. Virus replication by production of low virus titers occurred in IB-RS-2 and Vero cells with reovirus and in BHK-21 cell line with IBDV. |

Plutella xylostella is a recurring pest on cruciferous crops around the world. In Brazil, it typically requires large number of insecticide sprays, which may lead to fast evolution of resistance. The aim of this study was to assess the susceptibility of Brazilian diamondback moth populations to the insecticides abamectin, deltamethrin, and spinosad. Leaf dip bioassays were used to determine mortality data obtained after 48 h of exposure to insecticides and subjected to Probit analysis. The population from Bonito, state of Pernambuco, Brazil, had the highest toxicity ratio (20.2 - fold) to abamectin compared to the reference population. The LC50 values for deltamethrin ranged from 85.2 to 360.1 mg L-1, demonstrating a high survival of populations in... |

This work aimed to study the interaction between the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana and Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc), the pathogen responsible for black rot of crucifers. The response of 32 accessions of A. thaliana to the Brazilian isolate of Xcc CNPH 17 was evaluated. No immunity-like response was observed. "CS1308", "CS1566" and "CS1643" grown in continuous light were among the accessions that showed strongest resistance when inoculated with 5 x 10(6) CFU/mL. In contrast, "CS1194" and "CS1492" were among the most susceptible accessions. Similar results were obtained when plants were grown under short-day conditions. To quantify the differences in disease symptoms, total chlorophyll was extracted from contrasting accessions at different... |

ABSTRACT: The present study aimed to assess the antibiotic resistance in 54 indigenous Lactobacillus plantarum isolated from artisanal fermented sausages. The confirmation of the strain species was performed by multiplex-PCR assay. Antibiotic resistance was assessed by disk diffusion (DD) and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) methods. Of 54 L. plantarum, 44 strains were genotypically confirmed as L. plantarum and 3 as Lactobacillus pentosus. The highest resistance rates were to ampicillin and streptomycin. The highest susceptibility rates were shown to tetracycline, chloramphenicol and penicillin G. None of the strains showed multidrug resistance. Resistance rates by DD and MIC were not different (P>0.05) for ampicillin, chloramphenicol,... |

Records of in vitro susceptibility tests performed between 1992 and 2011 were retrospectively reviewed in order to evaluate the dynamic profiles of possible changes in antimicrobial resistance of Staphylococcus spp. isolated from milk samples of cows with mastitis during two decades. The results of 2,430 isolates tested by disk diffusion technique for susceptibility to oxacillin, penicillin, ampicillin, cephalexin, norfloxacin, tetracycline, sulfazotrim, gentamicin, and neomycin were analysed. Comparisons were performed between the percentages of resistance to antimicrobials and their classes and also between the decades studied. Additionally, the possible tendency or changes in the behaviour of these pathogens against the major drugs used in the last two... |

Third-instar tobacco budworms, Heliothis, susceptible or resistant to pyrethroids were tested by exposure to residues of insecticides in glass liquid scintilillation vials. These biossays were done to find alternative insecticides or insecticide combinations for control of larvae resistant to pyrethroids, to evaluate the effect of synergists on insecticide toxicity and resistance, and to establish the main mechanisms of resistance present. Insecticides effective for control of resistant third-instar tobacco budworms included profenofos, sulprofos, acephate, endusulfan, methomyl, and thiodicarb. Cypermethrin combined with chlordimeform, piperonyl butoxide nor chlordimeform produced more thenfive-fold synergism. The only synergistic insecticide combination... |

O mofo preto, a antracnose e o oídio, causadas pelos fitopatógenos Pilgeriella anacardii Arx & Müller, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides e Pseudoidium anacardii (F. Noack) U. Braun & R.T. |

Recent studies have observed symptoms of leaf spot in pecan (Carya illinoinensis) associated with species of the Cladosporium cladosporioides complex (C. cladosporioides, C. pseudocladosporioides, and C. subuliforme). Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the pathogenicity of these Cladosporium spp. isolated from two pecan cultivars. Twenty-six isolates were used to inoculate leaflets of the cultivars, ?Barton? and ?Shawnee?, with a spore suspension. The suspension was applied through drops on the surface of the leaflets, the material was kept in boxes, ?gerbox?, in the incubation room. After 22 days, leaf spots varied from small circular brown to black stains, which indicated the advancement of the disease. The three Cladosporium sp. were... |
