Effect of bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) oil administered by gavage on the fatty acid composition and oxidative stress of mouse liver BJMBR
Silva,L.P.; Miyasaka,C.K.; Martins,E.F.; Leite,J.R.S.A.; Lacava,Z.G.M.; Curi,R.; Azevedo,R.B..
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of daily intragastric administration of bullfrog oil (oleic, linoleic and palmitoleic acid-rich oil), corresponding to 0.4% of body weight for four weeks, on fatty acid composition and oxidative stress (lipid peroxidation and catalase activity) in mouse liver. The activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), biomarkers of tissue injury, were determined in liver homogenates and serum. The proportions of 18:2n-6, 20:4n-6, 20:5n-3, and 22:6n-3 (polyunsaturated fatty acids, from 37 to 60%) in the total fatty acid content were increased in the liver of the bullfrog oil-treated group (P < 0.05)...

Daniel,Ana Paula; Ferreira,Lauren Fresinghelli; Klein,Bruna; Ruviaro,Amanda Roggia; Quatrin,Andréia; Parodi,Thaylise Vey; Zeppenfeld,Carla Cristina; Heinzmann,Berta Maria; Baldisserotto,Bernardo; Emanuelli,Tatiana.
ABSTRACT: This research aimed to evaluate whether the essential oil of Aloysia triphylla (EOAT) used in vivo as a sedative in the water for transporting fish could increase the oxidative stability of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) fillets during frozen storage. The chemical composition of EOAT and of fillets from fish exposed to EOAT (0, 30 or 40µL L-1) were assessed. The pH and lipid oxidation parameters (conjugated dienes, CD; thiobarbituric acid-reactive-substances, TBARS) were evaluated in the fillets throughout the storage period (-18±2oC/17 months). The main compounds found in EOAT were α- and β-citral. Treatment with EOAT did not modify the proximate composition of the fillets, but 40µL L-1 EOAT reduced pH levels when compared to the control...

Dextran iron in anemic lambs: effects on reticulocytosis and free radical production Ciência Rural
Rocha,Ricardo Xavier da; Bondan,Carlos; Marinho,Roberto; Lopes,Sônia Terezinha dos Anjos; Cecim,Marcelo.
Anemia due to worm infection is a major cause of loss in the sheep industry, due to deaths, drop in average daily gains and long recovery time following treatment. The present experiment was aimed at evaluating the oxidative status and the recovery of red blood cell (RBC) profile in lambs with induced anemia by bleeding, treated or not with dextran iron. Ten ram lambs 5 to 7 months old were used. Blood samples were drawn every other day and when reached packed cell volume (PCV) of 15% were randomly allocated (day zero) to one of the experimental groups. Treated group received a single dose of 25mg per kg body weight of a commercial formulation of dextran iron, the control group received no treatment. Blood samples were taken on days 0, 7, 14, and 21 after...

Mate extract on lipid and color changes of dourado fillets during frozen storage Ciência Rural
Veeck,Ana Paula de Lima; Boligon,Aline Augusti; Athayde,Margareth Linde; Emanuelli,Tatiana.
This study aimed to evaluate whether mate (Ilex paraguariensis A. St. Hil) extract would change lipid and color stability of dourado (Salminus brasiliensis) fillets during frozen storage. Fish fillets were dipped (1 min) in distilled water (control) or in aqueous extract of mate (0.1g mL-1, w/v) and were stored at -7°C for up to 12 months. Conjugated dienes (CD) increased in control fillets after 6 months of storage and then decreased, whereas thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) value increased along the whole experimental period. Mate treatment reduced CD and TBARS values of fillets. Dourado fillets tended to yellow along the whole experimental period (average H*= 72.55) Although the mate treatment had increased the yellowness of fillets at...

Control of the lipid oxidation in Nile tilapia feed Ciência Rural
Grassi,Thiago Luís Magnani; Marcos,Marcelo Tacconi de Siqueira; Ponsano,Elisa Helena Giglio.
ABSTRACT: The purpose of this research was to investigate the progress of the rancidity in Nile tilapia diets containing bacterial biomass of Rubrivivax gelatinosus . Six experimental treatments comprised basal diet (negative control), diet with asthaxanthin (positive control) and 4 diets with different concentrations of the bacterial biomass. The thiobarbituric acid assay for rancidity analyses were accomplished after 6 and 12 months of diets storage. It was concluded that Rubrivivax gelatinosus biomass minimized the racidity in Nile tilapia diets in 32.52 to 44.72% at 6 months and in 37.85 to 52.37% at 12 months of storage.

Changes in oxidative markers, endogenous antioxidants and activity of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase in farmers exposed to agricultural pesticides - a pilot study Ciência Rural
Murussi,Camila; Horn,Roberta Cattaneo; Santi,Adriana; Clasen,Barbara Estevão; Reis,Gabriel; Souza,Daniela; Bortolotto,Josiane Woutheres; Manfio,Candida Elisa; Loro,Vania Lucia.
Agricultural practices are directly related to the use of pesticides, which indiscriminately and without due care may contribute to the occurrence of numerous intoxications. Several studies have demonstrated the relationship of certain pesticides and the occurrence of oxidative stress and therefore, in recent years have developed methods of analysis of several biomarkers of cellular damage that can be measured and quantified. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the possible changes in biochemical markers: glutamic aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), creatinine, urea, total protein, and oxidative markers such as lipid peroxidation, damage to proteins and the activity of the enzymes acetylcholinesterase...
