Shell repair in the freshwater gastropod Bithynia tentaculata (Linnaeus, 1758) Naturalis
Cadée, Gerhard C..
A large sample rich in empty Bithynia tentaculata (Linnaeus, 1758) was collected in a drift-line along Lake IJssel, The Netherlands. Of 400 adult Bithynia shells 62 (15.5%) showed repair of a damaged outer lip, most probably due to failed attacks by predators. The roach Rutilus rutilus (Linnaeus, 1758) was probably its main shell-crushing predator here. However, repair after physical damage by waves breaking on the stones of the dike cannot be excluded completely.

Sabellids and serpulids (Polychaeta sedentaria) from the type Maastrichtian, the Netherlands and Belgium Naturalis
Jäger, M..
Calcareous tubes of the sabellid genus Glomerula and of the family Serpulidae (subfamilies Serpulinae and Spirorbinae) rank amongst the commoner, highly diverse biota of the type Maastrichtian strata. These cover the sequence from the upper Beutenaken Member (Gulpen Formation) up to and including the Meerssen Member (Maastricht Formation). Of the 40+ taxa of calcareous worm tubes found in this interval, the commonest ones are described and illustrated in the present paper, which also comprises a revision of data published in 2005.

Late Cretaceous ophiuroids in the Binkhorst Collection at the Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin, reassessed Naturalis
Jagt, J.W.M.; Neumann, C..
A small lot of latest Cretaceous brittlestars from the Maastrichtian type area, contained in the Binkhorst [van den Binkhorst] Collection at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin, is restudied and, in part, illustrated for the first time. Presumably, these thirteen specimens represent only a portion of the ophiuroid material referred to in two papers by Binkhorst van den Binkhorst, both published in 1859, because all are assignable to two species which are common only in the Nekum and Meerssen members of the type Maastrichtian, namely Felderophiura vanderhami Jagt, 1991, and Ophiomusium lux Jagt & Kutscher in Jagt, 2000. Brittlestar material from lower levels within the Maastricht Formation (i.e., Valkenburg, Gronsveld, Schiepersberg and Emael members)...

Pteropods (Mollusca, Euthecosomata) from the Early Eocene of Rotterdam (The Netherlands) Naturalis
Janssen, A.W..
A borehole was drilled at Rotterdam in 1955 as a demonstration during the E55 exhibition. Holoplanktonic molluscs (pteropods) were found to be present in the interval 504.5-655.0 m below rotary table (= RT). The upper sample of Middle Eocene (Lutetian) age yielded just a few unidentifiable limacinids. The section between 507.5-607.0 m, of Early Eocene (Ypresian) age, yielded poorly preserved pteropods and demonstrated that the complete interval belongs to pteropod zone 9. Apart from the most abundant species, Camptoceratops priscus, which is the index taxon of pteropod zone 9, the section yielded Heliconoides mercinensis and Limacina taylori, which are known to accompany the index species. Two further limacinid species are described as new to science, viz....

On the stratigraphic position of the Delden Member (Breda Formation, Overijssel, the Netherlands) with implications for the taxonomy of Pygocardia (Mollusca, Bivalvia) Naturalis
Bosch, J.; Wesselingh, F.P..
Re-identification of parts of the mollusc fauna of the Delden Member, especially Pygocardia and Panopea species, from the vicinity of Delden (Overijssel prov., the Netherlands) and comparison with other Neogene faunas from the southern North Sea Basin imply a late Early to early Late Pliocene age for the Delden fauna, that usually is attributed to the Miocene. Shell measurements performed for this study revealed that the species definitions for Pliocene North Sea Basin Pygocardia are inadequate.

Non-indigenous marine and estuarine species in The Netherlands Naturalis
Wolff, W.J..
An overview is presented of non-indigenous marine and estuarine plant and animal species recorded from The Netherlands. In this list both exotic species from outside NW Europe and non-indigenous species from elsewhere in NW Europe are enumerated. Species that have been suggested to be non-indigenous in The Netherlands but for which insufficient evidence could be found are discussed shortly as well. The list is based mainly on literature data supplemented by own observations of the author. At least 99 plant and animal species have been introduced from elsewhere in the world. Another 13 species have been introduced from other parts of NW Europe. The third category of dubious non-indigenous species enumerates 37 species. The list is preceded by an...

An early seal (Mammalia, Pinnipedia) from the Middle Miocene (Langhian) of Miste (The Netherlands) Naturalis
Schneider, S.; Heissig, K..
A single, upper premolar tooth of a seal from the Miste mollusc bed (Miocene, middle Langhian: The Netherlands) is determined as an upper P3 of Miophoca cf. vetusta Zapfe. Fossils of this species and genus have to date only been reported from the Late Badenian (uppermost Langhian) of the Central Paratethys, at “Neudorf-Sandberg” (Devínská Nová Ves, Slovakia). This latter locality, however, is some two million years younger than the Miste Bed. The tooth from Miste represents the first evidence for the presence of the genus Miophoca in the North Sea Basin.

Het genus Hylaeus in Nederland (Hymenoptera, Colletidae) : with a key to the species of N.W. Europe in English Naturalis
Koster, A..
The distribution and ecology of all twenty species of Hylaeus Fabricius, 1793 occurring in The Netherlands are discussed. A comprehensive key (in English) to the species of The Netherlands and adjacent areas is given. The maps illustrating the distribution within The Netherlands are based upon ca. 10,000 specimens. The collection of the Leiden Museum and literature sources were used in preparing the maps showing the distribution in Europe. Two species, H. pfankuchi and H. styriacus, have not been recorded from the Netherlands since 1950.

Recognizing cephalopod boreholes in shells and the northward spread of Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797 (Cephalopoda, Octopodoidea) Naturalis
Hiemstra, Auke-Florian.
Octopuses prey on molluscs by boring through their shell. Among the regular naticid borings, traces of cephalopod predation should be found soon on Dutch beaches. Bottom trawling has declined, and by the effects of global warming Octopus will find its way back to the North Sea where it lived before. I describe the distinguishing characters for Octopus bore holes, give an introduction into this type of behaviour, present a short history of Dutch octopuses and a prediction of their future.

Cetaceans stranded in the Netherlands from 1998 to 2007 Naturalis
Camphuysen, C.J.; Smeenk, C.; Addink, M.; Jansen, O.E..
Between 1998 and 2007, 2063 cetaceans were found stranded in the Netherlands, representing at least 14 species. Two species, humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) and Blainville’s beaked whale (Mesoplodon densirostris), are additions to the Dutch list. Apart from the first humpback whales, relatively many balaenopterid whales were found in comparison with previous decades. Range extension of recovering populations may explain part of this trend. However, the decline in strandings frequency in sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), another species with a slowly recovering Atlantic population but with a distinct peak in strandings in the 1990s, suggests that the factors underlying these changes are complex. During the 20th century, the strandings frequency...

The second record of Borsodia (Arvicolidae, Rodentia) from the Pliocene of the Netherlands Naturalis
Mayhew, D.F..
This note describes a tooth of the extinct lagurine vole genus Borsodia (Arvicolidae, Rodentia) from a borehole at Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Borsodia was previously reported for the first time from the Netherlands on the basis of a tooth dredged from the Oosterschelde (Reumer et al. 2005). Attention is drawn to the use of Borsodia for stratigraphic correlation and climatic interpretation.

The distribution and diversity of whales and dolphins (Cetacea) in the southern North Sea: 1970-2005 Naturalis
Meij, S.E.T. van der; Camphuysen, C.J..
Between 1970 and 2005 sightings data of cetaceans in the southern North Sea were collected as part of the Marine Mammal Database of the Dutch Seabird Group. The data include incidental sightings and reports as well as results from systematic surveys and seawatching data. They are therefore difficult to correct for fluctuations in observer effort. The material was evaluated firstly to see which species occur in Dutch waters and, secondly, to see if any spatial and temporal trends in abundance can be observed. In this study the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) is excluded from the analysis, except in the discussion, where the results are put into context with data about strandings and overall abundance. The status of the 17 different species that have...

The find of a whale barnacle, Cetopirus complanatus (Mörch, 1853), in 10th century deposits in the Netherlands Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B.; Smeenk, C.; Laarman, F.J..
A specimen of Cetopirus complanatus dating from the 10th century A.D. is described from archaeological excavations at Tiel, the Netherlands. Two vertebral parts of northern right whales Eubalaena glacialis: a vertebral arch and an epiphysis, were also found, possibly dating from the same period. The disc-like epiphysis had been used as a cutting board. The specimens probably had reached Tiel through early trade in whale products. Cetopirus complanatus is only known from right whales of the genus Eubalaena. It has not been found in the Northern Hemisphere since the late 19th century. Its host species in the North Atlantic and North Pacific, E. glacialis, is now very rare as a result of whaling.

Anatomical evidence for the occurrence of Lymnaea (Galba) palustris (O.F. Müller, 1774) and L. (Galba) corvus (Gmelin, 1778) (Gastropoda: Lymnaeidae) in the Netherlands Naturalis
Velde, G. van der; Kessel, C.M. van.
A study was made on the Lymnaea (Galba) palustris complex in The Netherlands. Investigations on the genitalia proved that in The Netherlands two species are present, viz. L. palustris (O. F. Müller, 1774) and L. corvus (Gmelin, 1778), which can not in all cases be distinguished by shell characters. Genitalia were prepared, drawn and several measurements were carried out to investigate the variation within the two species. It appeared that most characters show a partial or total overlap. Some characters appeared to separate the two species absolutely. One of these is very useful for a quick distinction of both species, viz. the situation of the truncus receptaculi with respect to the oviductus, which character is already visible after a general dissection...

Nile perch demand in the Netherlands: are exports from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda source-differentiated? AgEcon
Muhammad, Andrew.
This study examined Nile perch demand in the Netherlands and assessed the importance of country of origin as a determining factor. Import demand equations were estimated using the absolute price version of the Rotterdam model where Nile perch fillets were differentiated by product form (chilled and frozen) and by source country (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda). The Armington framework (source-differentiation) is often used when estimating import demand for a similar product from different sources; however, the results of this study indicated that country of origin is not a factor in the Netherlands when importing Nile perch. Results showed that the responsiveness of importers to price changes was the same regardless to the supplying country. Likelihood ratio...

PERCEPTIONS OF RISKS AND RISK MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES; AN ANALYSIS OF DUTCH LIVESTOCK FARMERS AgEcon
Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Huirne, Ruud B.M.; Hardaker, J. Brian.
The risk environment of farmers is changing and new risk management strategies are being introduced. Beal (1996) stated that risk management strategies adopted by farmers will be in accordance with their personal preferences for risk. In this context it would be useful for developers and sellers of new risk management strategies to have insight into farmers' preferences for risk. This paper studies to what extent such preferences are farmer-specific or whether general relationships exist. By means of a large questionnaire survey among 2700 livestock farmers in the Netherlands we gathered data on four groups of variables, i.e. socioeconomic characteristics of the farm, farmers' attitudes towards risk, their perceptions of sources of risk, and their...
