Proline content of sunflower cultivars in the Brazilian semiarid region PAB
Carvalho,Luciana Marques de; Araújo,Stela Braga de; Carvalho,Hélio Wilson Lemos de; Carvalho,Claudio Guilherme Portela de.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the proline content of sunflower (Helianthus annuus) cultivars, in the conditions of natural water deficit in the Brazilian semiarid region. Thirteen cultivars were sown in experiments set in three sites in the Brazilian Northeast. Proline content was determined on leaves from plants at the R4-R5 stage. Significant differences among cultivars occurred only where water availability was lower. Proline averages ranged from 3.47 to 17.41 μg g-1. The sunflower cultivars BRS387, BRS323, and BRS324 showed the greatest proline contents with 54.74, 46.27, and 35.16 μg g-1, respectively. These are the cultivars that accumulate more proline under conditions of a severe water deficit.

Maize yield and rainfall on different spatial and temporal scales in Southern Brazil PAB
Bergamaschi,Homero; Wheeler,Timothy Robert; Challinor,Andrew Juan; Comiran,Flávia; Heckler,Bruna Maria Machado.
This study aimed to establish relationships between maize yield and rainfall on different temporal and spatial scales, in order to provide a basis for crop monitoring and modelling. A 16-year series of maize yield and daily rainfall from 11 municipalities and micro-regions of Rio Grande do Sul State was used. Correlation and regression analyses were used to determine associations between crop yield and rainfall for the entire crop cycle, from tasseling to 30 days after, and from 5 days before tasseling to 40 days after. Close relationships between maize yield and rainfall were found, particularly during the reproductive period (45-day period comprising the flowering and grain filling). Relationships were closer on a regional scale than at smaller scales....

Isolation of a cotton NADP(H) oxidase homologue induced by drought stress PAB
NEPOMUCENO,ALEXANDRE LIMA; STEWART,JAMES MCD; OOSTERHUIS,DERRICK; TURLEY,RICKIE; NEUMAIER,MORMAN; FARIAS,JOSÉ RENATO BOUÇAS.
The aim of this study was to identify and isolate genes that are differentially expressed in four selected cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) genotypes contrasting according to their tolerance to water deficit. The genotypes studied were Siokra L-23, Stoneville 506, CS 50 and T-1521. Physiological, morphological and developmental changes that confer drought tolerance in plants must have a molecular genetic basis. To identify and isolate the genes, the mRNA Differential Display (DD) technique was used. Messenger RNAs differentially expressed during water deficit were identified, isolated, cloned and sequenced. The cloned transcript A12B15-5, a NADP(H) oxidase homologue, was up regulated only during the water deficit stress and only in Siokra L-23, a drought...

Rice yield estimation based on weather conditions and on technological level of production systems in Brazil PAB
Monteiro,José Eduardo Boffino de Almeida; Azevedo,Letícia da Costa; Assad,Eduardo Delgado; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar.
The objective of this work was to evaluate an estimation system for rice yield in Brazil, based on simple agrometeorological models and on the technological level of production systems. This estimation system incorporates the conceptual basis proposed by Doorenbos & Kassam for potential and attainable yields with empirical adjusts for maximum yield and crop sensitivity to water deficit, considering five categories of rice yield. Rice yield was estimated from 2000/2001 to 2007/2008, and compared to IBGE yield data. Regression analyses between model estimates and data from IBGE surveys resulted in significant coefficients of determination, with less dispersion in the South than in the North and Northeast regions of the country. Index of model...

Effect of Glyphosate on Guineagrass Submitted to Different Soil Water Potential Planta Daninha
SILVA JR.,A.C.; GONÇALVES,C.G.; SCARANO,M.C.; PEREIRA,M.R.R.; MARTINS,D..
ABSTRACT: The action of herbicides on weeds that develop under water deficit can be compromised, because the routes of penetration of hydrophilic herbicides are reduced due to the lower hydration of the cuticle in these plants. Moreover, hydrophobic compounds found in the epicuticular wax coating of plants under water stress, hinder the penetration of hydrophilic compounds. This study evaluated the control efficiency of glyphosate on guineagrass plants when submitted to different water deficits. The study was conducted in a greenhouse, and treatments were composed of guineagrass plants submitted to three soil water conditions [low water deficit (13%), intermediate water deficit (10%) and high water restriction (8%)], three doses of glyphosate (0.0, 270.0...
