Drug resistance of yeasts isolated from oropharyngeal candidiasis in aids patients Rev. Microbiol.
Silva,Maria do Rosário Rodrigues; Paula,Claudete Rodrigues de; Silva,Soraya Cristina; Costa,Théo Rodrigues; Costa,Márcio Rodrigues.
Candida spp was isolated from 59 (68.60%) out of eighty six samples of oral mucosa of AIDS patients. The identification, based or the production of a germ tube and chlamydospores, and on the assimilation and fermentation of carbohydrates, revealed 52 strains (88.13%) of C. albicans, 4 (6.77%) of C. tropicalis and 3 (5.08%) of C. krusei. The susceptibility of these strains to amphotericin B, flucytosine, itraconazole, fluconazole and ketoconazole was determined using the agar dilution method. Comparing the minimum inhibitory concentration values found in the susceptibility test with the serum levels achieved by these drugs, only 8.47% and 5.08% of the yeasts strains proved to be resistant to amphotericin B and flucitosyne, respectively. A high frequency of...

Effect of some vitamins and micronutrient deficiencies on the production of higher alcohols by Saccharomyces cerevisiae Scientia Agricola
Gutierrez,L.E..
A study was carried out in order to determine the effect of vitamins (biotin, thiamine, pantotheniic acid and pyridoxal) and micronutrient (zinc, boron, manganese and iron) deficiencies on higher alcohol production during alcoholic fermentation with the industrially used yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae M-300-A. Zinc deficiency induced a reduction on the levels of isobutyl and isoamyl alcohols. An increase on isobutyl alcohol (fivefold) and a reduction of isoamyl alcohol (two fold) and n-propyl alcohol (three fold) contents resulted from pantotheiiic acid deficiency, whereas pyridoxal deficiency caused an increase on the levels of isobutyl and isoamyl alcohols. Biotin was not essential for the growth of this strain.

Fatty acid composition of cane molasses and yeasts Scientia Agricola
Gutierrez,L.E.; Silva,R.C.M. da.
Lipid extract and fatty acid composition of cane molasses and yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae M-300-A and Saccharomyces uvarum IZ-1904) grown in molasses medium were determined. In molasses, linoleic acid was found in higher levels (around 42%) and was followed by palmitic, oleic and linolenic acids. The lipid extract varied from 1.02 to 3.13 gkg-1. In yeasts, the level of lipid extract varied from 16.65 to 31.12 g.kg-1 (dry matter basis) depending on the molasses type and yeast species. Both yeasts were able to incorporate fatty acids from molasses' and therefore linoleic and palmitic acids were the major fatty acids found in them.

Nascimento,Diego S.; Valasques Junior,Gildomar; Fernandes,Pedro; Ribeiro,Geise C.A.; Lima,Danyo M.; Góes-Neto,Aristóteles; Oliveira,Rodrigo Q.; Figueiredo-Ribeiro,Rita de Cassia L.; Assis,Sandra A. de.
Inulinase (β-2,1-D- fructan fructanohydrolase), EC 3.2.1.7, targets the β-2,1 linkage of inulin, a polyfructan consisting of linear β-2,1 linked fructose, and hydrolyzes it into fructose. This use provides an alternative to produce fructose syrup through the hydrolysis of inulin. The objective of this work was to study the production, characterization and applications of inulinases from the fungal endophyte CCMB 328 isolated from the Brazilian semi-arid region. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was employed to evaluate the effect of variables (concentration of glucose and yeast extract), on secreted inulinase activities detected in the culture medium and also in the inulin hydrolysis. The results showed that the best conditions for inulinase production by...

New protein sources in adults diet for mass-rearing of Anastrepha fraterculus (Diptera:Tephritidae) BABT
Morelli,Renata; Costa,Karen Zamboni; Fagioni,Kenya Martins; Costa,Maria de Lourdes Zamboni; Nascimento,Antônio Souza do; Pimentel,Rodrigo Meirelles de Azevedo; Walder,Julio Marcos Melges.
The aim of this study was to find alternatives to reduce the cost of mass production of the South American fruit fly (A. fraterculus) by looking for locally available products as protein source in the diet of adults to replace the imported product without changing the quality parameters. Two yeast from a Brazilian company were evaluated. The quality parameters showed that the imported hydrolyzed yeast used in the adult diet could be perfectly replaced by the local products tested, with a reduction of over 80% of the cost of the diet. The quality of the produced insects remained the same and there were improvements in some quality parameters such as the volume of eggs produced, number of adults flying and longevity under the stress.

Thermotolerance of Histoplasma capsulatum at 40 °C predominates among clinical isolates from different Latin American regions BJID
Sahaza,Jorge H.; Rodríguez-Arellanez,Gabriela; Canteros,Cristina E.; Reyes-Montes,María del Rocío; Taylor,Maria Lucia.
ABSTRACT The yeast phase of 22 Histoplasma capsulatum clinical isolates from Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, and Guatemala and three reference strains, one from Panama and two from the United States of America (USA), were screened for thermosensitivity characteristics using different analyses. Growth curves at 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, and 30 h of incubation at 37 and 40 °C, the growth inhibition percentage at 40 °C, and the doubling time at 37 and 40 °C were determined for all yeasts studied. Most of the isolates examined exhibited thermotolerant phenotypes at 40 °C, whereas a thermosensitive phenotype at 40 °C was only detected in the Downs reference strain from the USA. Growth inhibition values lower than 33.8% supported the predominance of the thermotolerant...

Anhydrobiosis in yeast: activation effect BJMBR
Intracellular substances released into the medium during rehydration of dry yeast cells can significantly improve the quality of a synthetic medium. Acceleration of yeast growth in this medium and increased yield of biomass are observed simultaneously. The change in the molecular arrangement of intracellular membranes as a result of the strong dehydration of live organisms is a negative phenomenon that reduces the level of cell viability. However, this phenomenon also represents an adaptive mechanism which facilitates the maintenance of population viability as a whole under extreme environmental conditions

Selection of starter cultures for the production of sour cassava starch in a pilot-scale fermentation process BJM
Penido,Fernanda Corrêa Leal; Piló,Fernanda Barbosa; Sandes,Sávio Henrique de Cicco; Nunes,Álvaro Cantini; Colen,Gecernir; Oliveira,Evelyn de Souza; Rosa,Carlos Augusto; Lacerda,Inayara Cristina Alves.
ABSTRACT Sour cassava starch (Polvilho azedo) is obtained from a spontaneous fermentation conducted by microorganisms from raw materials and fermentation tanks. This product is traditionally used in the baking industry for the manufacture of biscuits and Brazilian cheese breads. However, the end of fermentation is evaluated empirically, and the process occurs without standardization, which results in products of inconsistent quality. Predominant microbiota from a cassava flour manufacturer was isolated in order to select starter cultures for the production of sour cassava starch in a pilot-scale fermentation process. Lactic acid bacteria and yeasts were isolated, enumerated and grouped by Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism, and PCR fingerprinting,...

Bioethanol strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae characterised by microsatellite and stress resistance BJM
Reis,Vanda Renata; Antonangelo,Ana Teresa Burlamaqui Faraco; Bassi,Ana Paula Guarnieri; Colombi,Débora; Ceccato-Antonini,Sandra Regina.
Abstract Strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae may display characteristics that are typical of rough-type colonies, made up of cells clustered in pseudohyphal structures and comprised of daughter buds that do not separate from the mother cell post-mitosis. These strains are known to occur frequently in fermentation tanks with significant lower ethanol yield when compared to fermentations carried out by smooth strains of S. cerevisiae that are composed of dispersed cells. In an attempt to delineate genetic and phenotypic differences underlying the two phenotypes, this study analysed 10 microsatellite loci of 22 S. cerevisiae strains as well as stress resistance towards high concentrations of ethanol and glucose, low pH and cell sedimentation rates.
