Description of the lynx spiders of a canopy fogging project in northern Borneo (Araneae: Oxyopidae), with description of a new genus and six new species of Hamataliwa Naturalis
Deeleman - Reinhold, C.L..
All oxyopid spider species collected in a long-term ecological canopy project in northern Borneo are described. A total of nine species in three genera could be established, one of which belongs to a new genus. Four species could be assigned to known species, five are described as new species in the cosmotropical genus Hamataliwa. Description of one new species has been added from the ground collection. One species of Oxyopes was synonimised with Hamataliwa incompta (Thorell, 1895). H. helia Chamberlin, 1929, known hitherto only from southern U.S.A. and Mexico was found in the Bornean canopy. With nine species, Oxyopidae rank 10th on the list of 33 families in the Bornean canopy project. Tapponia micans Simon, 1885, typus generis is redescribed from the...

The rediscovery of Cervera atlantica (Johnson, 1861) (Cnidaria: Octocorallia): notes on its identification, ecology and geographical distribution Naturalis
Williams, R.B..
Cervera atlantica, a small stoloniferan octocoral, was described as Cornularia atlantica by James Yate Johnson in 1861 from Funchal, Madeira. It then remained unrecognized until 1972 when I discovered it on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. I have since confirmed its existence at the type locality and have traced its distribution around Madeira, throughout the Canary Islands, and on Portuguese and English coasts. In the Mediterranean Sea, I have found it along Spanish and French coasts, among the Balearic Islands and on the coast of Cyprus. Cervera atlantica is cryptic and photophobic, living under stones in shallow water (usually at 0-2 m) or in crevices and caves in massive intertidal rocks, protected from direct sunlight. Intolerant of rough water, it...

A revision of the polytypic Albinaria hippolyti (Boettger, 1878) from Crete (Gastropoda Pulmonata: Clausiliidae) Naturalis
Schilthuizen, M.; Welter-Schultes, F.W.; Wiese, V..
On the basis of both detailed distributional field studies and morphological analyses, a revision of the polytypic species Albinaria hippolyti from Central and Eastern Crete is presented. True subspecies are distinguished from mere geographic varieties by the presence of narrow hybrid zones. Using this criterion, four adjoining subspecies are recognised: A. h. hippolyti (Boettger, 1878), A. h. aphrodite (Boettger, 1883), A. h. holtzi (Sturany, 1904) and A. h. harmonia subspec. nov. Additionally, two geographically isolated and conchologically distinctive forms are also treated as subspecies: A. h. arthuriana (Boettger, 1878) and A. h. asterousea subspec. nov. The geographical distribution and variability of each subspecies is described in detail. A. h....

New perspectives on the evolution of the genus Typhlatya (Crustacea, Decapoda): first record of a cavernicolous atyid in the Iberian Peninsula, Typhlatya miravetensis n. sp Naturalis
Sanz, Sebastián; Platvoet, Dirk.
On several occasions, shrimps belonging to a new species of the genus Typhlatya were collected in a cave in the province of Castellón, Spain. This is the first record of the genus in the Iberian Peninsula. The species is described and the validity, distribution, and zoogeography of the genus, as well as the status of the genus Spelaeocaris, are discussed. Former models for the evolution of the genus Typhlatya and its genus group are reviewed, as well as the system of inner classification of the Atyidae and its biogeographical meaning. For the age and evolution of the genus we developed a new model based on vicariance principles that involves further evolution of each species after the disruption of the ancestral range. This allows new estimations for the...

New distribution data for Podocnemis erythrocephala (Spix) with remarks on some other turtle taxa (Reptilia: Chelonia: Pelomedusidae) Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S.; Avila-Pires, T.C.S. de.
During fieldwork in the Lago de Faro, the lower reaches of the Rio Nhamundá, on the border of the Brazilian states of Pará and Amazonas, several species of pelomedusid turtles were observed. Podocnemis erythrocephala and P. unifilis occur in the area and breed there; P. expansa seems to be absent or at least very rare, though it does occur nearby in the Rio Trombetas. A single specimen of Peltocephalus dumeriliana was collected opposite the Ilha dos Maicós in a small igarapé emptying in the Rio Trombetas. It is concluded that the distribution area of Podocnemis erythrocephala is more extensive than recently thought. Durante trabalho de campo no Lago de Faro, próximo à foz do Rio Nhamundá, no limite dos estados brasileiros do Pará e Amazonas, diversas...

Charles Chilton: the Phreatoicoidea and other interests of a phreatic pioneer from down under Naturalis
Hurley, D.E..
Besides his widespread activities in zoology and university development, Charles Chilton (1860—1929) was a pioneer in phreatic research who opened up the possibilities of the new science in the Southern Hemisphere. He described phreatic and subterranean species of Isopoda and Amphipoda from New Zealand, Australia and elsewhere and discussed the significance of their morphology and habitat. His finds included the first species of the widespread endemic Southern Hemisphere group, the Phreatoicoidea, and he pointed to Gondwanaland connections in this and other groups which he accepted and interpreted in the context of his time.

TOWARDS A REVIEW OF THE DECAPOD CRUSTACEA FROM THE REMOTE OCEANIC ARCHIPELAGO OF TRINDADE AND MARTIN VAZ, SOUTH ATLANTIC OCEAN: NEW RECORDS AND NOTES ON ECOLOGY AND ZOOGEOGRAPHY Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
TAVARES,MARCOS; CARVALHO,LEINA; MENDONÇA JR.,JOEL BRAGA DE.
ABSTRACT The remoteness of the Trindade and Martin Vaz young volcanic archipelago (TMV) raises questions about the source of its marine benthic fauna and levels of endemism. Addressing these questions requires a comprehensive knowledge of the taxonomic composition of the marine fauna of the islands. A five-year survey in the shallow marine waters (up to 30 m) and a literature review on the data published for TMV have been conducted to document the biodiversity of the benthic fauna. Here we report on ten new records of decapod crustaceans from TMV: Gnathophyllum americanum and Thor amboinensis are circumtropical in distribution, whereas Stenopus hispidus, Gnathophylloides mineri and Parribacus antarcticus are disjunct circumtropical species as their...

Nudibranchia from the remote southern Chilean Guamblin and Ipún islands (Chonos Archipelago, 44-45° S), with re-description of Rostanga pulchra MacFarland, 1905 RChHN
SCHRÖDL,MICHAEL; GRAU,JOSÉ H.
The southern Chilean archipelago and fjordland (41-52° S) thus far is very poorly investigated also with regard to its nudibranch fauna. This study presents the first records of nudibranchs from remote islands of the Chonos archipelago exposed to the open Pacific. Collecting data and some biological observations are given for the doridoidean Archidoris fontaini, Diaulula punctuolata and Rostanga pulchra. Taxonomically relevant external and radular characters of R. pulchra are redescribed and compared with literature data on conspecifics from Argentina and California. The bipolar, cold-water adapted R. pulchra is critically compared with the western Atlantic, warm-water adapted R. byga. New distributional data indicates that the Chiloé Island area (41-43°...

Geographic distribution and description of four pelagic barnacles along the south east Pacific coast of Chile - a zoogeographical approximation RChHN
HINOJOSA,IVÁN; BOLTAÑA,SEBASTIÁN; LANCELLOTTI,DOMINGO; MACAYA,ERASMO; UGALDE,PABLA; VALDIVIA,NELSON; VÁSQUEZ,NELSON; NEWMAN,WILLIAM A; THIEL,MARTIN.
The majority of zoogeographic studies along the Chilean Pacific coast have focused on benthic organisms and oceanographic conditions are considered the main factors influencing their distributions. Herein we examined the geographic distribution of pelagic barnacles of the family Lepadidae collected from floating macroalgae at seven sampling areas between 23 and 50° S. Four species were encountered and they are briefly described herein. The most abundant northern species was Lepas anatifera, and it diminished in abundance towards the south (33° S). Moreover, this species was not found in waters with a sea surface temperature (SST) of less than ~18 °C. Lepas australis, primarily a circumpolar West Wind Drift species, diminished in abundance towards the north...

Ecological analogies between estuarine bottom trawl fish assemblages from Patos Lagoon, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil and York River, Virginia, USA Zoologia
Vieira,João P..
The structure of estuarine fish assemblages at temperate latitudes in Patos Lagoon (32º05'S, 52º04'W), Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil and York River (37º17'N, 76º33'W), Virginia, USA was compared using mid and late 1970's data from bottom trawl collection to investigate whether geographically isolated fish assemblages have similar ecological structure given similar latitudinal positions on the warmtemperate southwestern and northwestern Atlantic regions, respectively. Since estuarine species often exhibit an ontogenetic shift in habitat requirements or preferences we examined Capture per Unity of Effort by size class (CPUE-SC) and split species into "size ecological taxa" (SET) for analysis. The use of CPUE-SC also allowed the abundance of a SET to be computed...

Check list of snakes from the Brejos de Altitude of Paraíba and Pernambuco, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Pereira Filho,Gentil Alves; Montingelli,Giovanna Gondim.
The Atlantic Forest is one of the priority areas for conservation in the world, since exhibits an overwhelming biodiversity of species. Among this biome stands the biogeographic unit located north of San Francisco River, which extends from the state of Alagoas to Rio Grande do Norte. On this portion of Atlantic Forest some isolated fragments of humid forests can be found, inserted in the arid Caatinga, known as Brejos de Altitude or Brejos Nordestinos. There is a total of 43 Brejos distributed in the states of Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba and Pernambuco and with the exception of some humid enclaves in the state of Ceará, the snake fauna of these areas are poorly known. Thus, our aim is to evaluate the current status of the snakes that inhabited...

Non-flying mammals of Chapada Diamantina (Bahia, Brazil) Biota Neotropica
Pereira,Luciana Guedes; Geise,Lena.
Chapada Diamantina is located in central Bahia state, and has a large diversity of habitats, including important transitional areas, but has remained largely unstudied until now. In the present study we list the non-flying mammals of Chapada Diamantina National Park and surroundings. We captured only small non-volant mammals, medium and large mammals were assessed through indirect evidences (tracks and marks) and interviews. We recorded 58 species and 47 genera from seven Mammalian orders. Seven species are included in the list of endangered Brazilian species by IBAMA and IUCN; and other seven are classified as data-deficient. Species richness of small mammals was equivalent among sampled habitats, but species composition varied among habitats (10 in...
