Charakterisierung von Bioporenwandungen mit in situ Endoskopie und chemischer Analyse: Einfluss von Regenwürmern auf Kohlenstoff- und Stickstoffgehalte Organic Eprints
Athmann, Miriam; Fetscher, Johannes; Zemke, Daniel; Kautz, Timo; Köpke, Ulrich.
Biopores have been shown to be enriched with plant available nutrients as compared to the surrounding bulk soil and therefore are considered hot spots for the nutrient acquisition especially in the otherwise nutrient-poor subsoil. As a result of colonization of biopores by earthworms, pore walls are enriched with nutrients. In this study, a first attempt was made to assess the influence of earthworm abundance on both structural pore wall characteristics as assessed with in situ endoscopy and on pore wall C and N contents. Higher earthworm density resulted in higher N contents and significantly higher C contents in biopore walls as compared to the surrounding bulk soil, regardless whether they showed visible earthworm coatings. In the treatment with lower...

Beeinflusst die Bewirtschaftung das Vorkommen von Jakobskreuzkraut (Senecio jacobaea)? Organic Eprints
Suter, Matthias; Siegrist-Maag, Sandra; Luescher, Andreas.
Senecio jacobaea is a poisonous weed in grasslands of various countries (e.g. Great Britain, New Zealand, Central European states), and the further spread of the species into farmland must be prevented. Due to strong restrictions of curative measures, the prevention of S. jacobaea’s spread is of primary importance for organic farming. To assess the influence of management practice and site conditions on the occurrence of S. jacobaea, we conducted an on-farm survey in the northern and central part of Switzerland. Botanical assessments were carried out on grassland plots with S. jacobaea occurrence and on neighbour plots without S. jacobaea. For these plots, we analysed the soil nutrients and the details of management practice such as type and intensity of...

Testing of strawberry-varieties (with/without biodegradable mulch film) for organic cultivation Organic Eprints
Pfeiffer, B..
Different strawberry varieties, available from organic propagation at that time were, planted in August 2004 and proofed about their suitability for organic cultivation, each variety was tested with and without biodegradable mulch film. Within the early ripening strawberry varieties ‘Clery’ had a middle yield and was susceptible for infections with leaf spot, losses of plants by Verticillium were seldom. This variety should be planted early to reach enough vigor in autumn. ‘Clery’ has an interesting potential in the phase of higher prices at the beginning strawberry season. ‘Darselect’ ripened shortly before ‘Elsanta’, the yield was lower, but the fruit-size bigger, so the picking could be done more quickly. ‘Elsanta’ showed in this trial under...

Biogaserzeugung ohne Flächenkonkurrenz auf Basis von Zwischenfrüchten, Kleegras und Reststoffen Organic Eprints
Szerencsits, Manfred; Erhart, Eva.
Cover or catch crops have beneficial effects for soil, water, erosion, etc. If harvested, they also provide feedstock for biogas without competition for arable land. The latter also applies to clover grass ley or other residues on organic farms without ruminants and for manure. With an explorative approach, combining field experiments and data collection of practical implementation, we investigated achievable yields and identified recommendations for practical use. Gross energy yields of cover crops varied between 700 and 2000 m³ methane (CH4) ha-1 in Austria. The energy return on energy invested (EROI) ranges from 4 to 7, if biogas is upgraded and com¬pressed for biofuel use. Therefore, about 1000 m³ CH4 ha-1 are remaining as net energy yield from 4.5 t...

Levin, Karin; Simon, A.; Reents, Hans Jürgen; Hülsbergen, Kurt-Jürgen.
The long-term effects of biogas production in organic farming on soil fertility due to changes in crop rotations and the removal of carbon from these systems are, at present, unclear. Data from a long-term field trial in Bavaria, Germany were used to evaluate the effects of different crop rotations and fertilization with biogas digestate on maize yields and humus balances. Digestate fertilization led to higher maize yields compared with an unfertilized control. Maize yields were lower when the maize was sown directly into a white clover cover crop. Humus balances show the importance of considering both the return of organic matter via fertilization and crop rotation design to ensure that soil fertility is not depleted

Nutrient composition and bioavailability of protein and energy in common fruits and vegetables prepared for human consumption Organic Eprints
Jørgensen, Henry; Lauridsen, Charlotte.
Growing rats were used as animal model to evaluate the digestibility of energy and protein digestible corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS) in some common fruits and vegetable grown during two subsequent growth seasons in different cultivation systems. The ingredients were cultivated by each of three different farming strategies: LIminusP: low input of feritlizer without pesticides, LIplusP: lowinput of fertilicer and high input of pesticides and LHplusP: high input of fertilizer and high input of pesticides. The protein quality of the dietary ingredients gave rise to the following ranking: apples, carrots, potatoes, kale and peas. The amino acid pattern in peas and potatoes complemented each other fairly well as dietary sources, while lysine turned out to...

Local food and municipal food services: case Kiuruvesi, Finland Organic Eprints
Risku-Norja, Helmi.
In Finland, the Kiuruvesi municipality is the pioneer in use of local and organic food (LOF) in the statutory municipal catering services. The LOF strategy is based on territorial approach, and it was adopted as one means of enhancing the attractiveness of the remotely located municipality with unfavorable population development. The local policymakers have been fully committed to the strategy, and this has enabled the consistent development during nearly two decades. The Kiuruvesi case demonstrates the gradual shift of focus in the competitive bidding process from price-based tendering towards anticipatory dialogue and interaction between the suppliers and catering personnel. Over the years the LOF concept has brought about various kinds of food...

The two-spotted spider mite can be controlled by water Organic Eprints
Conte, Dr. Luca; Chiarini, Dr. Francesca.
The effects of a fogging system on the control of the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) were studied in greenhouse cultivation of eggplant, cucumber and strawberry during the period 1999-2006. At the beginning the pest and the phytoseiid predator Phytoseiulus persimilis were released on the crops and then observations were made on the development of the populations of both mites. Fogging system effects were found in terms of lowering the T. urticae population and hindering the growth of powdery mildew fungus. Furthermore there was a yield increase in the cases of strawberry and cucumber in 2001 but no negative impact on pest management was ever detected, particularly on the biological control of the melon aphid (Aphis gossypii) achieved using...

Climate change and range shift of Igutettix oculatus Organic Eprints
Huusela-Veistola, E.; Söderman, G..
The leafhopper Igutettix oculatus (Lindberg) is a new arrival in Finnish fauna. I. oculatus has adapted to live on lilacs Syringa sp. The nymphs and adults feed sap on the underside of the lilac leaves and can cause substantial discoloration. Although yellowing of leaves seems to cause no harm to the growth of the lilacs, cosmetic damage and reduction of market value are obvious.

Screening New Legume Species for Use as Cover Crop in Southern Germany Organic Eprints
Fischer, V.; Baresel, Jörg Peter; Charrois, A.; Köckeis, M.; Udupa, S. M..
A screening among more than 800 accessions, belonging to more than 100 species was performed in the frame of an international cooperative research program from 2012 to 2016. Aim of the screening was, to identify new species and suitableaccessions, suitable as cover crops and living mulches in Mediterranean, temperate and more continental climates. In this contribution, results obtained in southern Germany are reported, focusing on potential new cover crops. Several new cover crop species could be identified, which were characterized by high biomass production ad weed suppression, as well as by good seed production. Both species and accessions with early and late growth cycle could be identified.

Prediction of grain yield of spring barley varieties by disease and growth characteristics from VCU testing Organic Eprints
Østergård, H.; Kristensen, K.; Jensen, J.W..
Fifty spring barley varieties grown under organic as well as conventional growing conditions in experimental fields in four combinations of year and site were studied. The yield varied much within and between environments (years and sites) and systems. Further, the variation between varieties was substantially and it differed between different environments and systems. Associations between observed grain yield of these varieties and disease and growth characteristics assessed in the official conventional variety testing were compared between the organic and the conventional system. Using factorial regression analysis, the best model for predicting the observed grain yield each year from these characteristics the previous year was found. In this model, the...

Introduction to the current EU regulation on health claims, with special reference to berries Organic Eprints
Sarkkinen, Essi.
In the regulation claims are divided into two main categories: nutrition and health claims. In the future only claims that are positively pre-evaluated by EFSA are allowed to be used in commercial communication (all means). Regulation will uniform the use of health claims also in berry production in EU and will hopefully increase the awareness on established health benefits of berries.
