Phenolic compounds in native potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cooking water, with potential antioxidant activity Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
ROJAS-PADILLA,Carmen Rosa; VASQUEZ-VILLALOBOS,Victor Javier; VITAL,Camilo Elber; ROJAS,Julio Cesar; RIOS,Nelson Horacio; LUJAN,Angel Pedro; NINAQUISPE,Viviano Paulino; ESPINOZA,Mario Sergio.
Abstract For over two decades, there has been an increasing interest in finding natural antioxidants, because they can protect the human body from free radicals and retard the progress of many chronic diseases. Phenolic compounds were identified and quantified in potato cooking water from freeze–dried slices with peel and from whole potato stored for 20 days. Extracts were obtained with an aqueous solution composed of 50% methanol and 0.5% acetic acid. Fifteen secondary metabolites were monitored using the Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography system coupled to mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS / MS). A calibration curve (from 0.1 ng to 100 μg) was generated and the data was analyzed using the software “MassHunter Workstation” VB 06.00, the results were...

Low- and No- Calorie Sweeteners (LNCS): critical evaluation of their safety and health risks Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
MALULY,Hellen Dea Barros; JOHNSTON,Craig; GIGLIO,Norberto Damián; SCHREINER,Ligia Lindner; ROBERTS,Ashley; ABEGAZ,Eyassu Getachew.
Abstract The increase of the prevalence of type-2 diabetes as a consequence of overweight and obesity has stimulated public health authorities worldwide to develop strategies for its risk management and prevention. Among them, a reduction on the content of sugar in sugar-sweetened foods and beverages has been suggested, which led the food industry to replace partially sucrose with food additives, such as low- and no-calorie sweeteners (LNCS). As a consequence, there has been an increase of their consumption, which has made regulatory agencies to evaluate their exposure and possible consequences. At the same time, speculations about adverse effects, such as carcinogenicity, preterm delivery and metabolic changes involving appetite, weight increase and...

Electrochemotherapy treatment of oral extramedullary plasmacytoma of the tongue: a retrospective study of three dogs Ciência Rural
Cunha,Rúbia Monteiro de Castro; Lavalle,Gleidice Eunice; Caires,Carla Emanuela Tertuliano; Araújo,Roberto Baracat de.
ABSTRACT: Extramedullary plasmacytomas (EPs) are responsible for 2.5% of neoplasms in dogs. They are solitary, smooth, elevated, pink or red nodules, of 1 to 2cm in diameter. Cutaneous and oral extramedullary plasmacytomas in dogs are usually benign tumors, treated with local therapies. Prognosis is generally good. Recurrence and metastatic rates are low. Electrochemotherapy is a local treatment that combines chemotherapy and electroporation and shows objective responses of 70% to 94% with few local and systemic side effects. This scientific communication has the objective to report treatment of three canine patients with oral extramedullary plasmacytoma. Nodules were located on the tongue and patients were submitted to one or two electrochemotherapy...

The use of tubular subdermal and axial flaps in the correction of four cases of extensive lesions Ciência Rural
Huppes,Rafael Ricardo; Pazzini,Josiane Morais; Nardi²,Andrigo Barboza De; Castro,Jorge Luiz Costa; Gomes,Cristiano; Sprada²,Arícia Gomes; Pascolli²,Ana Lúcia.
ABSTRACT: The most common skin lesions in small animals result from trauma, burns, or surgical resection of large tumors. Given the high importance of reconstructive surgery associated with tumors in small animals, this study reports four cases of reconstructive surgery using subcutaneous and axial tubular flaps in animals with neoplastic lesions. Subdermal and axial tubular flaps are healthy alternatives for reconstructing wounds caused by large tumor resection in areas with poor tissue elasticity.

Cyclooxygenase-2 expression in epithelial neoplasms and its relevance as a targeted therapy in dogs Ciência Rural
Cunha,Rúbia Monteiro de Castro; Horta,Rodrigo dos Santos; Lavalle,Gleidice Eunice; Araújo,Roberto Baracat.
ABSTRACT: Targeted therapy of neoplasms is an emergent approach in human and veterinary medicine. Cyclooxygenase (COX) is a class of catalytic enzymes related to the formation of inflammatory mediators. COX-2 is expressed constitutively in a few body tissues, but it may be induced in specific pathophysiologic conditions, such as cancer. COX-2 expression in neoplams may be considered a potential predictive factor, due to the possible association of selective COX-2 inhibitors in adjuvant treatments. This scientific communication has the objective to report COX-2 expression in seven neoplasms of dogs and the usage of adjuvant treatment with COX-2 selective inhibitors as an effective and feasible option in cancer treatment.
