Viana, Lucilene Finoto; Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul; Tondato, Karina Keyla; Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul; Súarez, Yzel Rondon; Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul; Lima-Junior, Sidnei Eduardo; Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul.
In this study, it was examined the reproductive biology of Astyanax. altiparanae, in streams with different levels of environmental disturbance in the Ivinhema river basin (Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil). Samplings were conducted between July 2001 and November 2011, at 101 sites, using sieves, seining nets, gill nets and electrofishing. Streams were classified into three levels of environmental integrity. We analyzed 735 specimens, 410 females and 325 males. Females predominated in impacted streams and both sexes presented nearly the same pattern of length distribution in the three levels of environmental integrity. Females reached gonadal maturity with greater lengths (L50 = 55.67mm) in altered and impacted streams and had higher reproductive activity...

Semiquantitative mercury determination in fish: a tool for poisoning prevention Anais da ABC (AABC)
YALLOUZ,ALLEGRA V.; CALIXTO,TATIANA; HACON,SANDRA.
Human exposure to mercury intoxication through contaminated fish ingestion has been well studied, mainly among Japanese population. The Brazilian population, particulaly in the Amazon region, is now in focus due to findings of fish contamination. Major health impacts caused by mercury affect mostly people who have a regular fish diet. A continuous checking for mercury content in the most consumed fish could prevent human intoxication. A simple, non-instrumental method to allow a continuous checking of the mercury content in fish was developed. Based on this method, we are proposing a prevention action where community agents can be trained to perform fish analysis. Technical Schools and Universities located nearby the affected areas would be in charge of...

Inactivated Parapoxvirus ovis as inducer of immunity in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) Anais da ABC (AABC)
PAVAN,TATIANA R.; NIED,CRISTIAN O.; NORO,MIRELA; ANZILIERO,DENIZ; FRANDOLOSO,RAFAEL; KREUTZ,LUIZ CARLOS.
ABSTRACT Molecules with immune modulating activity are ubiquitously distributed in nature and their impact on aquaculture has been exploited in order to increase fish resistance to pathogens. Here, we investigated the effect of inactivated Parapoxvirus ovis (iPPVO) on blood cells and innate and acquired immune response of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen). iPPVO inoculation had no effect on respiratory burst activity; however, following iPPVO inoculation, we observed a significant decrease on circulating monocytes concomitantly with an increased number of heterophilic granulocytes and thrombocytes, which are the main cells involved in innate immunity and provide connection with acquired immunity. Fish inoculated with a combination of bovine serum albumin...

Influence of tides and winds on fishing techniques and strategies in the Mamanguape River Estuary, Paraíba State, NE Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Bezerra,Dandara M.M.; Nascimento,Douglas M.; Ferreira,Emmanoela N.; Rocha,Pollyana D.; Mourão,José S..
This work was carried out in two small fishing communities, Barra de Mamanguape and Tramataia, Northeastern Brazil. The aim was to study these traditional fishermen's knowledge and perception about tide and wind classifications, as well as their fishing strategies and techniques. Our research methodology involved various techniques: free interviews and semi-structured ones, guided tours and direct observations. The results obtained show the fishermen's classification of the tides according to the phases of the moon: 'breaking tide', 'flushing tide', 'dead tide' and 'big tide' designated technically these last as neap tide and spring tide, respectively. Wind is also an essential factor for the fishermen to make successful catches, and they classify it...

Mitochondria-rich cells changes induced by nitrite exposure in tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum Cuvier, 1818) Anais da ABC (AABC)
COSTA,OSCAR T.F. DA; RAMOS,CLEVERSON A.; DUNCAN,WALLICE P.; LAMEIRAS,JULIANA L.V.; FERNANDES,MARISA N..
ABSTRACT The gill mitochondria-rich cells of the juvenile Amazonian fish Colossoma macropomum were analyzed using light and scanning and transmission electron microscopy after 96 h exposure to 0.04 and 0.2 mM nitrite. Although the number of mitochondria-rich cells decreased significantly in the lamellar epithelium, no decrease was found in the interlamellar region of the gill filament. Nitrite exposure caused significant reduction on the apical surface area of individual mitochondria-rich cells (p < 0.05), with a resulting reduction of the fractional area of these cells in both the lamellar and filament epithelium. Swelling of endoplasmic reticulum cisternae, nuclear envelope and mitochondria were the main changes found in the mitochondria-rich cells....

Variability in the trophic position of larval fishes in theupper Paraná floodplain based on δ15N Anais da ABC (AABC)
Manetta,Gislaine I; Bialetzki,Andréa; Martinelli,Luiz A; Benedito,Evanilde.
The upper Paraná River floodplain is composed of several marginal lagoons, making it a natural breeding ground for many fish species at developmental stages. The aim of this study is to estimate the trophic positions of these fishes based on feed intake (measured via diet) and nitrogen assimilation (measured via δ15N). The monthly samplings were concentrated during the spawning season in the Ivinheima River, which is located in the upper Paraná River floodplain. The specimens were grouped into preflexion, flexion and postflexion stages. Trophic positions were estimated based on the isotope value of nitrogen and on diet. During the developmental stages of P. squamosissimus, there were significant differences in the isotope values of δ15N; for H. edentatus,...
