Genetic parameters of resistance to Meloidogyne incognita in melon Ciência Rural
Candido,Willame dos Santos; Castoldi,Renata; Santos,Lucas da Silva; Tobar-Tosse,Dora Enith; Soares,Pedro Luiz Martins; Braz,Leila Trevisan.
ABSTRACT: In order to assess the genetic control of resistance in the melon ‘Gaúcho Redondo’ to the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita, an experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with three blocks and six treatments using the parental lines ‘Gaúcho Redondo’ (P1 resistant) and JAB 20 (P2 susceptible), as well as F1, F2, and backcross generations (RC1P1 and RC1P2). Seventy days after inoculation, individual plants were evaluated for resistance using the nematode reproduction factor (RF). The hypothesis of monogenic inheritance was rejected by the chi-square test (χ2), and results indicated that resistance is controlled by more than one gene locus, as confirmed by the quantitative analysis that revealed the presence of six genes.

Estimate of genetic parameters and predicted gains with early selection of physic nut families Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Laviola,Bruno Galvêas; Alves,Alexandre Alonso; Gurgel,Fábio de Lima; Rosado,Tatiana Barbosa; Costa,Rhayanne Dias; Rocha,Rodrigo Barros.
An initial evaluation of early selection of physic nut genotypes based on phenotypic data is presented. In order to predict the genetic gains with early selection, genetic parameters, e.g. additive genetic variance, were first obtained for grain yield along with other numerous traits. The results demonstrated that additive genetic variance exists not only for grain yield, which is considered to be the most important trait for oil and biodiesel production, but also for numerous other traits. The predicted genetic gains for grain yield, considering the selection of the 30, 20, 10 and 5 best families in the second crop year are respectively, 40.47, 48.43, 61.78 and 70.28%. With the selection of highly yielding physic nut genotypes indirectly genotypes with...

Selection in several environments by BLP as an alternative to pooled anova in crop breeding Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Bueno Filho,Júlio Sílvio de Sousa; Vencovsky,Roland.
Plant breeders often carry out genetic trials in balanced designs. That is not always the case with animal genetic trials. In plant breeding is usual to select progenies tested in several environments by pooled analysis of variance (ANOVA). This procedure is based on the global averages for each family, although genetic values of progenies are better viewed as random effects. Thus, the appropriate form of analysis is more likely to follow the mixed models approach to progeny tests, which became a common practice in animal breeding. Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) is not a "method" but a feature of mixed model estimators (predictors) of random effects and may be derived in so many ways that it has the potential of unifying the statistical theory of...

Genetic divergence in pepper genotypes from southwest Goiás Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Alvares,Renata Cristina; Reis,Edésio Fialho dos; Pinto,Jefferson Fernando Naves.
Knowledge on the genetic diversity in genebanks is important for germplasm conservation and use in breeding programs, where it can reduce time and costs of breeding of new genotypes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the genetic divergence among 137 genotypes of Capsicum chinense Jacq. by morphological descriptors and multivariate techniques, with a view to the identification of groups for promising crosses for breeding programs. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications, where each plot consisted of a pot with one plant. The 20 descriptors recommended by the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute - IPGRI were considered for the morphological characterization. By...

Carioca bean genotypes for tolerance to grain darkening by natural and accelerated methods Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Spitti,Acácia Mecejana Diniz Souza; Carbonell,Sérgio Augusto Morais; Dias,Carlos Tadeu dos Santos; Sabino,Luis Gustavo; Carvalho,Cássia Regina Limonta; Chiorato,Alisson Fernando.
ABSTRACT The slow darkening of grains is sought by bean breeders because the consumers consider that darker grains demand more time for cooking. The analysis currently used takes around 90 days to differentiate grain color among genotypes. The objective was to evaluate the color as a function of the value of L* (lightness) of carioca beans, by natural and accelerated methods to verify equivalence between methods, validation of the methodology and identification of genotypes tolerant to the darkening. The grain darkening was compared and evaluated by natural darkening method under shelf conditions, in days storage, and accelerated darkening method under ultraviolet light, in hours. The natural darkening time of 90 days was statistically equal to 24 hours of...

Performance of the double-cross tomato hybrids from a partial diallel Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Matos,Rafael de; Resende,Juliano Tadeu Vilela de; Zeist,André Ricardo; Corte,Lígia Erpen-Dalla; Da-Silva,Paulo Roberto; Zeffa,Douglas Mariani.
ABSTRACT Knowledge of the combining ability of genotypes, genetic diversity, and heterosis play the paramount role in obtaining double-cross hybrids with high productivity. This study was aimed at evaluating these parameters in tomato genotypes using partial diallel crosses among the commercial single-cross hybrids, which verified the possibility of using double-cross hybrids for commercial purposes. Tomato genotypes included 15 double-cross hybrids, their genitors, and two commercial genotypes as checks. Of the fifteen double-cross hybrids of tomato, two crosses exhibited superiority, such as Aguamiel × Compack and Dominador × Compack, mainly for the total and commercial fruit yields. The phenotypic expression of the trait is controlled by the genes with...

Early selection of full-sib potato families Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Melo,Dheyne Silva; Pinto,César Augusto Brasil Pereira; Peixouto,Leandro Santos; Neder,Diogo Gonçalves; Assis,Josiane Cristina de.
Clonal selection is the preferred breeding method used in potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.). However this selection procedure is only efficient for more advanced generations and shows no good results when applied in the seedling up to the second clonal generation. This study assessed the feasibility of selection in early generations of full-sib potato families and compares the selection method among and within families with the combined selection under different selection intensities. Six experiments were conducted from the first (C1) until the third clonal generation (C3). In C1 a randomized complete block design with four replications of 25 plants was used. In the remaining generations RCB was employed with three replications of 10 plants. Genetic...

Genetic progress in popcorn recurrent selection by a multivariate mixed-model approach Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Ematné,Hugo Junqueira; Nunes,José Airton Rodrigues; Souza,João Cândido de; Muñoz,Patrício Ricardo.
ABSTRACT Recurrent selection is a viable alternative for popcorn breeding. However, frequent verification of progress attained is required. The aim of this study was to estimate the genetic progress attained for popping expansion (PE) and grain yield (GY) after four cycles of recurrent selection and to compare this progress with the expected progress estimated at the end of each cycle while considering the genetic relationships between the progenies via univariate and multivariate mixed-model approaches. To estimate the genetic parameters and gains from indirect selection, cycles 1, 2, 3, and 4 of a UFLA population were used. To estimate the genetic gains achieved, the following cycles were used: UFLA (original) and cycles 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4, evaluated in...

Evaluation of soybean breeding lineages to new sources of root-knot nematode resistance Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Hamawaki,Osvaldo Toshiyuki; Hamawaki,Raphael Lemes; Nogueira,Ana Paula Oliveira; Glasenapp,Jacqueline Siqueira; Hamawaki,Cristiane Divina Lemes; Silva,Carolina Oliveira da.
ABSTRACT In Brazil, as the soybean crop expands the losses caused by nematodes as well as its incidence in producing areas have increased. Therefore, this work aimed to develop a non-genetically modified soybean which combines desirable traits as the root-knot nematode resistance, early-maturity, high seed yielding, and high oil and protein contents. Consequently, seeds (F2) derived from the double-crossing between (Guarani x Sambaiba) x (M Soy 6101 x Conquista) were bulked to grow the F3 generation. Following generations were advanced by the SSD method of breeding until F6. Thus, plants showing superior characteristics were planted separately to perform progeny tests and then advanced breeding lines were thoroughly tested and compared to standards in...
