The role of semiochemicals in mediating intraguild interactions between the seven-spot ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata, and the aphid parasitoid, Aphidius ervi, was investigated. Female parasitoids avoided leaves visited by C. septempunctata adults and larvae during the previous 24 hr. Ethanol extracts of C. septempunctata adults and larvae also induced avoidance responses by A. ervi. Two of the hydrocarbons identified by gas chromatography ( GC) and coupled GC-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), n-tricosane (C23H48), and n-pentacosane (C25H52), when tested individually at levels found in the adult extract, induced avoidance by A. ervi. Merozoite surface antigen 2 (MSA2) is a Plasmodium falciparum vaccine candidate. Antibody responses to MSA2 in Melanesians naturally exposed to P. falciparum were investigated by ELISA using the recombinant MSA2 protein known as Ag 1609 and 65 overlapping synthetic peptides spanning predominantly the conserved N and C terminal regions of MSA2. Significant differences were obtained between control and malaria exposed subjects in the ability of sera to bind to Ag 1609. The median absorbance obtained with control sera was 0.36 whereas that obtained with sera from malaria exposed subjects was 1.8. The sera of ninety-five percent of malaria exposed subjects reacted significantly with Ag 1609. The percentage reactivity of the control sera with Ag 1609 was 39%.... |

Due to the recent outbreak of avian influenza, transportation of frozen canine semen with egg yolk has been sharply restricted. Thus, there is urgent need to develop a novel egg yolk-free extender for freezing canine spermatozoa. In the present study, the effect of using skim milk/glucose (SG)-based extender without egg yolk on the motility and fertilizing capacity of canine spermatozoa frozen-thawed in the presence of glycerol was examined. There was a tendency for the proportion of motile spermatozoa exposed to SG-based extender for 3 h to be higher than that exposed for 1 h, but the difference was not significant.
