Cerna-Chávez,E; Martínez-Martínez,Y; Landeros-Flores,J; Aguirre-Uribe,L; Sánchez-Valdes,V; Cepeda-Siller,M; Hernández-Bautista,O; Ochoa-Fuentes,YM.

Accumulation of silver nanoparticles and its effect on the antioxidant capacity in Allium cepa L Phyton
Juárez-Maldonado,A; Rosales-Velázquez,JL; Ortega-Ortiz,H; Cabrera-De-la-Fuente,M; Ramírez,H; Benavides-Mendoza,A.
Nanotechnology is currently an important worldwide study field because it provides control on matter at a nanometric scale. In food and agricultural fields, the applications of this technology are in early stages. Onion is one of the main vegetables grown in the world. Onion is a low calorie food which contains a large amount of flavonoids. In this work, silver nitrate application in onion was evaluated. An onion crop was developed at the University Antonio Narro in Saltillo, Mexico. Two methods of silver nitrate application were used (a nutritive solution: 0, 20, 40 and 80 mg/L of AgNO3; and foliar spray: 0, 20 and 40 mg/L of AgNO3). The samples were taken at 30, 60 and 90 days after transplanting. Total antioxidant capacity, silver accumulation and...

Quantitative measures of leaf epidermal cells as a taxonomic and phylogenetic tool for the identification of Stanhopea species (Orchidaceae) Phyton
Foroughbakhch,R; Ferry Sr,RJ; Hernández-Piñero,JL; Alvarado-Vázquez,MA; Rocha-Estrada,A.
Orchids of the genus Stanhopea are currently identified only by their floral structure characteristics. A statistical analysis of a significant number of species of this genus disclosed that measurements of adaxial and abaxial epidermal cell surface areas can be correlated with specific recognized species by a leaf printing method. This allows an objectively either positive or nearly positive confirmation of the identity of a species in the absence of flowers and without damage to plants. When ordering the mean values obtained for these surface areas in each species in a decreasing order, a correlation was observed in a hierarchical way that went from primitive to more advanced floral forms. This reflects the evolutionary radiation of the genus. It is...

Histocytological examination on organogenesis and somatic embryogenesis of HBsAg-transgenic cherry tomato mutant Phyton
Guan,Z-J; Guo,B; Huo,Y-L; Dai,J-K; Wei,Y-H.
The initiation and development of organogenic buds and somatic embryos in HBsAg-transgenic cherry tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum var. cerasiforme) mutant were studied histologically. The leaf explants of the mutant were cultured on Murashige & Skoog (MS) basal medium supplemented with 6-BA 1.0 mg/L and IAA 0.05 mg/L for callus induction. Histological studies on the leaf explants of the mutant at various developmental stages revealed that organogenic buds first appeared in the axillary position of explants on the 14th cultured day, and then somatic embryos formed in the same mutant explants after 35 days of culture. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy indicated that there were significant changes in morphology and...

Effect of vermicompost on the growth and health of Impatiens wallerana Phyton
Asciutto,K; Rivera,MC; Wright,ER; Morisigue,D; López,MV.
Rhizoctonia solani damping-off and root rot diseases are frequent in impatiens crops in Buenos Aires. Their control is based in fungicide use. In a sustainable nursery production, beneficial microorganisms that develop in organic amendments may suppress diseases and promote plant growth. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of different proportions of vermicompost on the growth and health of patience-plant (Impatiens wallerana). The experiment was carried out in a polyethylene greenhouse. Treatments were defined as follows: infested substrate, substrate, sterilized substrate, vermicompost, and vermicompost mixed with infested substrate at 75, 50 and 25% by volume. Seeds of I. wallerana were sown in plugs containing the different substrates....

Effect of man-made electromagnetic fields on common Brassicaceae Lepidium sativum (cress d'Alinois) seed germination: a preliminary replication study Phyton
Cammaerts,MC; Johansson,O.
Under high levels of radiation (70-100 µW/m2 =175 mV/m), seeds of Brassicaceae Lepidium sativum (cress d'Alinois) never germinated. In fact, the first step of seeds' germination ‒ e.g. imbibitions of germinal cells ‒ could not occur under radiation, while inside the humid compost such imbibitions occurred and roots slightly developed. When removed from the electromagnetic field, seeds germinated normally. The radiation was, thus, most likely the cause of the non-occurrence of the seeds' imbibitions and germination.

Ben Chekroun,K; Moumen,A; Rezzoum,N; Sánchez,E; Baghour,M.
The Aquatic system contamination by organic pollutants and heavy metals is one of the most serious problems that might face the environment and organisms as a whole. Interestingly, the accumulation of these pollutants is due to the anthropogenic activity, namely the intensive use of fertilizers to obtain high yields in crop production. In this paper, we compared the levels of chlorophylls, proteins, dry weight and sucrose in some red (Alsidium sp. and Gracilaria sp.) and green algae (Ulva sp.) collected from Mohandis, near Kariat and Bou Areg. Our results indicate that the algae collected nearby Bou Areg, an area well-known for its high agricultural activity, contained high levels of pigments, proteins and sugars. From the chlorophyll results, we conclude...

Comparison of four DNA extraction methods on various tissues and types of Sechium edule (Jacq.) Sw Phyton
Galindo-Tovar,ME; Gasperin-Sanatta,VS; Alejandre-Rosas,JA; Leyva-Ovalle,OR; Murguía-González,J; Lee-Espinosa,HE; Landero-Torres,I.
Sechium edule is an important crop in Southern Mexico and Central America, and México was the main producer, with 53% of the world production in 2012. This species presents high levels of morphological variation that have resulted in different types of varieties not clearly defned. However, morphological characteristics have not been sufficient to classify S. edule varieties, and it has been difficult to study the species genetic diversity. Because of it, there is a need to develop methods for studying the genetic diversity in S. edule. In this regard, the first step is to find a suitable DNA extraction method. For this reason, in this study four DNA extraction methods (two laboratory protocols, and two commercial kits) were compared for their efficiencies...
