Competition between rice (Oryza sativa L.) and (barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv.) as affected by methanol foliar application Anais da ABC (AABC)
Rezaeieh,Alireza D.; Aminpanah,Hashem; Sadeghi,Seyed M..
Pot experiment was conducted in Iran, to evaluate the effect of methanol on competition between rice (Oryza sativa) and barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli). The experiment was conducted as a randomized complete block design with a factorial treatment arrangement and three replicates. Factors were two aqueous methanol foliar applications (0, and 14% v/v) and five rice: barnyardgrass ratios (100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:6, and 0:100). Replacement series diagrams for aboveground dry weight illustrated that 'Shiroudi' was more competitive than barnyardgrass as averaged across methanol foliar applications. When methanol was not sprayed, the lines for 'Shiroudi' and barnyardgrass intersected at 75:25 rice: barnyardgrass ratio, but when methanol was sprayed at 14%...

Distribution of copper in soil and rice system of Hainan Island, China BABT
Dengfeng,WANG; Haijie,HUANG; Huande,FENG; Hua,WANG; Miaojie,HAN; Zhiping,QI.
ABSTRACT This research aimed to discover the distribution and the primary influence factors of Cu in the soil-rice systems of tropical farmland. Soil samples of farmland and rice plant (stalk and polished rice) from the western region of Hainan Island were collected and studied. The results showed that the average Cu content in the topsoil of the study area was 15.75 mg kg-1; the highest Cu content (45.92 mg kg-1) was found in the rice fields of the northern area, where pyroclastic parent material is distributed. Thus, there is a potential for Cu contamination of the rice grown in this region. The average contents of Cu in the rice stalks and polished rice were 16.9 and 5.68 mg kg-1, respectively, indicating that the stalks had a larger capacity for Cu...

Inheritance of blast resistance in rice to two Pyricularia grisea races, IB-1 and IB-9 Braz. J. Genet.
Filippi,Marta C. de; Prabhu,A.S..
Seven sources of resistance to the two predominant races IB-1 and IB-9 of the rice blast pathogen Pyricularia grisea were selected based on leaf blast reaction in tests conducted under controlled greenhouse conditions. Crosses involving resistant and susceptible parents were made to study the inheritance of the disease reaction for different sources of resistance. The F1 and F2 progenies of all crosses, including backcrosses to resistant and susceptible parents, were tested for reaction to leaf blast. The data showed that resistance is controlled by one to three genes that segregate independently in most of the donors. Non-allelic interaction among resistance genes, including dominant epistasis, was identified.

Bacterial community analysis of the water surface layer from a rice-planted and an unplanted flooded field BJM
Scavino,Ana Fernández; Menes,Javier; Ferrando,Lucía; Tarlera,Silvana.
The bacterial communities in floodwater, from a rice-planted and an unplanted field were characterized at the beginning (flooding stage) and at the end (harvest stage) of the rice cropping cycle. Most probable number estimations and plate counts of aerobic and anaerobic heterotrophic bacteria and of several metabolic bacterial groups (methanogens, sulfate-reducers, anaerobic sulfur and nonsulfur phototrophs, denitrifiers and ammonifiers) were similar in rice and unplanted floodwater at both sampling times. The analysis of denitrifiers and methanogens by fluorescent in situ hybridization revealed a shift in the phylogenetic affiliation only of the former group in the rice-planted floodwater. Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism of 16S rRNA gene...

Study of the interactions between Penicillium oxalicum Currie & Thom and Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissler BJM
Sempere,F.; Santamarina,M.P.
The aim of this research was the analysis of the possible antagonistic effect of Penicillium oxalicum over the pathogen rice fungus A. alternata under different conditions of temperature, water activity and culture media. The macroscopic study of the dual growth revealed that according to the Index of Dominance P. oxalicum was more competitive that A. alternata at 25ºC whereas at 15ºC was this species. Microscopic analysis showed that P. oxalicum was a mycoparasite of A. alternata at all conditions tested. The antagonist penetrated into A. alternata and disintegrated its conidiophores and conidia. The results suggests that P. oxalicum may be a possible biological control agent of the rice pathogens in a future.

Assessing long- and short-term trends in cereal yields: the case of Chile between 1929 and 2009 Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Engler,Alejandra; del Pozo,Alejandro.
Cereal grain yields have increased worldwide during the 20th century as a consequence of plant breeding, improved cultural practices and intensive use of inputs. However, there is evidence that there are differences in yield pattern evolution across countries and cereals. The purpose of this study was to compare trends in the yields of the most commonly produced cereals in Chile, namely wheat, oat, barley, maize and rice, to identify similarities in trends across crops and to estimate long-term growth rates in the yields and their changes over time. Data for wheat, barley, oat, rice and maize yields between 1929 and 2009 were obtained from the Chilean Oficina de Estudios y Políticas Agrarias (ODEPA). A first-order autoregressive (AR1) model with trend was...
