We present three new records of Micronycteris schmidtorum for the Atlantic Forest of northeastern Brazil. An adult female was collected in the Serra de Itabaiana National Park, Sergipe State; a post-lactating female was caught in the Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural Sitio Pau-Brasil, Coruripe, Alagoas State; and an adult female was collected in the Reserva Biológica Guaribas, Paraiba State. These records fill a gap of approximately 800 km between previously known localities of the species. |

Many methods of age determination have been used to date. However, most of them require laboratory procedures which are, in general, not available for wildlife managers in the field. In this paper we attempt to standardize the age categories for six mammal species through the analysis of dental wear, dental eruption and body mass. We analyzed 632 skulls, including Mazama nemorivaga (brown brocket deer), Mazama americana (red brocket deer), Tayassu pecari (white-lipped peccary), Pecari tajacu (collared peccary), Cuniculus paca (paca) and Dasyprocta leporina (agouti). Using biological and morphological criteria we define four age categories: young, sub adult, adult and senescent adult. Scores and variables of molar cusp wear and eruption were defined for... |

We evaluated the application of faecal analysis as a complementary approach to direct observation in the study of Callithrix jacchus feeding ecology. Our results indicate that animal foods may be more commonly consumed (based on faecal samples-FS; 61.48% of diet) than previously thought (e.g., only 22.83% based on observational data-OD). Whereas FS provide better data on animal prey, it was less effective than OD in identifying plant items. Six insect orders-including Dermaptera and two hymenopteran families, not previously recorded in marmoset diet-were identified through FS, which is thus shown to be useful in characterizing diet, especially in insectivorous primates. |

Recent field work in Paraguay has increased our knowledge of its mammal fauna, especially in terms of its distribution. Herein, we report three specimens of Monodelphis kunsi (Didelphidae), which are the first for the country and represent a significant range extension for this species. Two of the specimens come from a natural mixture of Cerrado and Atlantic Forest, on eastern Paraguay, whereas the third one is from the central Chaco. We review other records of Monodelphis species for the country and discuss geographic variation among M. kunsi specimens in Paraguay, as well as in regard to previous records in South America. Although this wide geographic range includes distinct habitats, we found no evidence of significant variation among specimens. |

The karyotype of Dasyprocta azarae has not been described previously. In this article we describe the karyotype of D. azarae from Northern Pantanal, Mato Grosso, Central Brazil. D. azarae has a diploid number 2n=64 and a number of autosomal arms NA=122. The 2n and NA are the same as those reported for other Brazilian species of Dasyprocta, but differ in chromosome morphology. Differences in the sex chromosomes were also found. The Y chromosome is acrocentric whereas in other Dasyprocta species is metacentric or submetacentric. The C-banding pattern coincides with that described for other species, except for pair six, having two bands of heterochromatin. The NOR patterns revealed intraindividual variation, with 1 to 6 NOR chromosomes. In the other species... |

Lonchophylla bokermanni is known from three localities in the southern portion of the Serra do Espinhaço, all located in the Cerrado of Minas Gerais. Based on recent material from two localities in the Caatinga of Bahia, northeastern Brazil, we report the species occurrence in the northern portion of Serra do Espinhaço. These new records extend the species distribution by more than 840 km and represent the first records of L. bokermanni in the Caatinga biome. The localities we report here are under severe anthropic pressure, and this distribution extension should not inhibit conservation efforts for the species. |
