Groundnut has been reported to be one of the most important oil crops in the world. It plays an important role in the diets of rural populations, livestock feeding and soil fertility particularly in developing world. The yield from farmers’ field has been low due to several factors. Increased groundnut production can be achieved through irrigation to complement the rainy season production while its productivity can be enhanced by the use of a safer and available alternative source of fertilizer like the poultry manure. This work was therefore undertaken to determine economic optimum level of poultry manure in groundnut production under irrigation. To achieve this objectives field trials were conducted during the 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 dry seasons at the... |

During the last decades Denmark has experienced a growing interest in low-input farming systems like organic farming. These systems rely on a high soil fertility to maintain nutrient availability and plant health. Soil aggregation contributes to this fertility, because it is crucial to soil porosity, aeration and infiltration of water. This paper reports a study of two pairs of differently managed, neighboring fields. The aim was to elucidate long-term effects of the different farming systems on physical and biological variables with influence on bonding and binding mechanisms of soil aggregation. Each pair consists of an organically grown dairy farm soil, based on a forage crop rotation system, including grass (Org-FCS(G)) and a conventionally managed... |

The Organic-Conventional Comparative Dairy Systems trial at Massey University began in August 2001, and the organic farmlet achieved certification in August 2003. The trial is unique because it is the only comparative grassland-based open grazing dairy study in the world. The organic and conventional systems are managed individually according to best practice, and both are intensively monitored for production, animal health, and environmental impacts. The systems remained similar for the first two years, but began to diverge in the third and fourth years. Production has been 10-20% lower on the organic farm, but environmental impacts appear to be less than on the conventional unit, and net incomes would be similar given a 20% price premium for the... |

The study ascertained sustainable agro- forestry practices and the benefits as a mitigation strategy for climate change and for promotion of organic agriculture among farmers in Imo State-Nigeria. Data was collected through questionnaire distributed to 180 respondents. It was analysed using descriptive statistics - percentages, frequency distribution tables, mean scores. The results revealed that the prevalent agro-forestry practices included rotational farming, improved fallow, intercropping, live fence making and soil and water conservation among others. The respondents agreed that the benefits of agro-forestry included reduced soil erosion, reduced heat stress, protection of crops from wind damage, improves soil fertility using organic manure, reduction... |

This web platform about organic production is systematically structured into different types of plant production, which is subdivided into various arable crop types – cereals, grain legumes, oil crops, tubers, intercrops and fodder crops - and other crop production. The clearly arranged platform provides a broad, easy to find knowledge with some ready-to use and step-by-step recommendations i.e. correct seedbed preparation, sowing time and density for legumes and so on. The user can find habitat and soil requirements, pest, disease and weed control and harvest are described for a successful crop-specific production. Additional information is free for download in each section, as the EU-legislation and the input list. The quality of a sections` content... |

Cover crops are a fundamental tool for weed control, especially in organic and low input farming. Species with different functional traits can be combined in mixtures to enhance weed suppression. Our aim was to test the relative importance of functional diversity and functional composition (i.e. complementarity) in improving and stabilising the agroecosystem services expected from cover crops. Following a preliminary screening on cover crop functional traits (Step 1), we identified 8 species belonging to 4 functional groups: large seeded legumes, characterized by higher height (Pisum sativum L., Vicia sativa L.), small seeded legumes, able to cover quickly the soil (Trifolium incarnatum L., T. squarrosum L.), highly competitive grasses (Hordeum vulgare... |
