Dietary protein levels in Piaractus brachypomus submitted to extremely acidic or alkaline pH Ciência Rural
Garcia,Luciano de Oliveira; Gutiérrez-Espinosa,Mariana; Wásquez-Torres,Walter; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The objective this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary protein levels in pirapitinga, Piaractus brachypomus, submited to extremely acidic or alkaline pH. Juveniles were fed for 20 days with three diets with different crude protein (CP) levels (25.3, 32.4 and 40.0%) and then separated in five groups (n=10, three replicates each) which were kept in 60 L aquaria and exposed to pH 3.0, 3.5, 7.0, 10, or 10.5. Fish were removed from aquaria when they showed loss of swimming balance, and then blood was collected and plasma separated for measurement of Na+, Cl- and K+ levels. The increase of dietary protein levels (up to 40.0% CP) provided some protection for pirapitinga at pH 3.5 or 10.0 because the time to lose equilibrium increased after acute...

Oxidative stability during frozen storage of fillets from silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen ) sedated with the essential oil of Aloysia triphylla during transport Ciência Rural
Daniel,Ana Paula; Ferreira,Lauren Fresinghelli; Klein,Bruna; Ruviaro,Amanda Roggia; Quatrin,Andréia; Parodi,Thaylise Vey; Zeppenfeld,Carla Cristina; Heinzmann,Berta Maria; Baldisserotto,Bernardo; Emanuelli,Tatiana.
ABSTRACT: This research aimed to evaluate whether the essential oil of Aloysia triphylla (EOAT) used in vivo as a sedative in the water for transporting fish could increase the oxidative stability of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) fillets during frozen storage. The chemical composition of EOAT and of fillets from fish exposed to EOAT (0, 30 or 40µL L-1) were assessed. The pH and lipid oxidation parameters (conjugated dienes, CD; thiobarbituric acid-reactive-substances, TBARS) were evaluated in the fillets throughout the storage period (-18±2oC/17 months). The main compounds found in EOAT were α- and β-citral. Treatment with EOAT did not modify the proximate composition of the fillets, but 40µL L-1 EOAT reduced pH levels when compared to the control...

Gill rakers in six teleost species: influence of feeding habit and body size Ciência Rural
Almeida,Ana Paula Gottlieb; Behr,Everton Rodolfo; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
This study analyzed the structure of the gill rakers of Parapimelodus valenciennis and Parapimelodus nigribarbis (planktivorous), Serrasalmus maculatus and Hoplias malabaricus (piscivorous), Iheringichthys labrosus (benthophagous) and Hypostomus commersonii (detritivorous) and related it with the body size and feeding habits of these species. The species of Parapimelodus and H. commersonii showed long, filiform and closely spaced gill rakers, similar to those of species that use the gill rakers as a filter to assist in the retention of small particles. The widely spaced gill rakers of I. labrosus probably allow the retention of insect larvae, but not particles of inorganic matter. In H. malabaricus and S. maculatus the gill rakers are most likely related...

Anesthesia of silver catfish with eugenol: time of induction, cortisol response and sensory analysis of fillet Ciência Rural
Cunha,Mauro Alves da; Zeppenfeld,Carla Cristina; Garcia,Luciano de Oliveira; Loro,Vania Lucia; Fonseca,Milene Braga da; Emanuelli,Tatiana; Veeck,Ana Paula de Lima; Copatti,Carlos Eduardo; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The aim of this study was to identify the time of anesthetic induction and recovery of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) exposed to eugenol. It was also determined the efficacy of the anesthetic as a stress reducing agent and performed a sensory analysis of the fillets from fish exposed to this substance. The silver catfish were exposed to air for 1min to carry out biometry, and blood was collected at 0, 1 and 4 hours later. Eugenol can be used in the range of 20-50mg L-1 for anesthetic induction in silver catfish, and recovery time from anesthesia was not affected by eugenol concentration. The control group showed significantly higher cortisol levels 4 hours after biometry than at time zero. Fish anesthetized with eugenol (50mg L-1) presented significantly...

Riffel,Ana Paula Konzen; Jardim,Sinara; Pires,Marcela Ciprandi; Bertagnolli,Bruna; Corrêa,Bruna Renata Silva; Ré,Francine Cenzi de; Zambra,Francis Maria Bao; Lubini,Greice; Garcia,Luciano Oliveira; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The aim of this study was to investigate the preferred pH in silver catfish Rhamdia quelen acclimated to different pH. Fish were acclimated for one week at pH 4.2±0.1, 5.2±0.1, 6.3±0.1, 7.2±0.1, 8.0±0.1, and 9.0±0.1 and after this period, transferred to a polyethylene tube with a pH gradient from 3.5 to 10.0. The position of the fish in the pH gradient was observed 1, 6 and 12 hours after transference. Results indicated that acclimation to different pH did not change pH preference of silver catfish (pH 7.0-7.6), occurring only a transitory variation around 6 hours after transference. This pH preference coincides with the best pH indicated in the literature for growth of this species.

Net ion fluxes and ammonia excretion during transport of Rhamdia quelen juveniles Ciência Rural
Garcia,Luciano de Oliveira; Barcellos,Leonardo José Gil; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The objective of this study was to verify net ion fluxes and ammonia excretion in silver catfish transported in plastic bags at three different loading densities: 221, 286 and 365g L-1 for 5h. A water sample was collected at the beginning and at the end of the transport for analysis of water parameters. There was a significant positive relationship between net ion effluxes and negative relationship between ammonia excretion and loading density, demonstrated by the following equations: Na+: y-24.5-0.27x, r2=0.99, Cl-: y=40.2-0.61x, r2=0.98, K+: y=8.0-27.6x, r2=0.94; ammonia excretion: y=-11.43+0.017x, r2=0.95, where y: net ion flux (mmol kg-1 h-1) or ammonia excretion (mg kg-1 h-1) and x: loading density (g). Therefore, the increase of loading density...

Piscicultura continental no Rio Grande do Sul: situação atual, problemas e perspectivas para o futuro Ciência Rural
Baldisserotto,Bernardo.

Piaia,Rosamari; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.

Lethal concentration of clomazone, metsulfuron-metil, and quinclorac for silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen, fingerlings Ciência Rural
Miron,Denise dos Santos; Silva,Lenise Vargas Flores da; Golombieski,Jaqueline Ineu; Machado,Sérgio Luiz de Oliveira; Marchezan,Enio; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The goal of the present work was to determine the lethal concentration (LC50) (96h) of clomazone, metsulfuron-methyl, and quinclorac, herbicides used in rice culture, for the silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen. Fingerlings were exposed to different concentrations of the herbicides. The LC50s were 7.32µL L-1 for clomazone and 395mg L-1 for quinclorac. The LC50 for metsulfuron-methyl was not obtained since all fingerlings survived even at 1200mgL-1. Probably only clomazone can lead to mortality among silver catfish reared in the rice culture system.

Growth of silver catfish ( Rhamdia quelen ) exposed to acidic pH at different humic acid levels Ciência Rural
Costa,Silvio Teixeira da; Sutili,Fernando Jonas; Gressler,Luciane Tourem; Loebens,Luíza; Colpo,Carine Vargas; Lazzari,Rafael; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
ABSTRACT: Humic substances are organic compounds that possess high molecular weight and are formed by the decomposition of plant materials. Humic substances comprise humic acids, fulvic acids and humin. Humic acids (HA) have shown to be able to provide some protection to biological membranes of fish in water with low pH, replacing the protective action of Ca2+. Thus, this studyaimed to observe growth of silver catfish ( Rhamdia quelen ) juveniles exposed to pHs 5.5 and 6.5 and to different levels of HA: 0, 10, 25 and 50mg L-1. Results showed that, irrespective of pH, HA was highly detrimental to silver catfish growth, since the higher the concentration of HA, the lower the weight gain and feed intake, resulting in lower biomass and lower specific growth...

Parodi,Thaylise Vey; Santos,Celina Alcoforado dos; Veronez,Alexandra; Gomes,Levy de Carvalho; Heinzmann,Berta Maria; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
ABSTRACT: This study analyzed the effectiveness of the essential oil of Aloysia triphylla (EOA) as an anesthetic and stress reducing agent in the transport of fat snook ( Centropomus parallelus ). Juveniles were exposed to different concentrations of EOA (seawater-adapted: 25-300μL L-1; freshwater-adapted: 200μL L-1) to identify the anesthetic induction and recovery times. In an additional experiment, seawater-adapted fat snook were transported in plastic bags with 10 or 20μL L-1 EOA for 6 or 24h. The increased concentration of EOA proportionally decreased the time required for anesthesia induction. Mortality was 30 and 70% in fat snook transported with 10 and 20µL L-1, respectively, 24h after transport. The addition of 20µL L-1 EOA significantly reduced...

Glyphosate on digestive enzymes activity in piava (Leporinus obtusidens) Ciência Rural
Salbego,Joseânia; Pretto,Alexandra; Silva,Vera Maria Machado da; Loro,Vania Lucia; Lazzari,Rafael; Gioda,Carolina Rosa; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The effects of glyphosate, a nonselective herbicide (1.0 or 5.0mg L-1) on digestive enzymes activity (stomach and intestine) were evaluated in juveniles of piava (Leporinus obtusidens) after 90 days of exposure. The activity of acid protease, trypsin, chymotrypsin and amylase increased with the increase of glyphosate concentration. These results indicate that glyphosate affects digestive enzyme activities in this species, and may be an indicator of poor nutrient availability when fish survive in herbicide-contaminated water.
