In the aim of diversification for small fisheries, a survey has been conducted in 2000 by the Regional Fisheries Committee and the French Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (Ifremer) between 200 and 600 m deep, in the West of Reunion Island. Potential commercial fish stocks have been found out. Numerous professional and recreational fishermen have bought equipment in order to exploit this resource (electric winches). But deep demersal fish is a fragile resource due mainly to low growth and late sexual maturation. Face to this increasing pressure upon a fragile resource, a new survey has been carried out by Ifremer in 2011, with use of the same fishing sites, material and method than in 2000. Results displayed in this report are compared to those of... |

Parmi... |

The network REMORA by IFREMER quarterly follows each year 2 batches of Pacific cupped oysters Crassostrea gigas ("juveniles"= 1 year old; and "adults" = 2 years old) on various sites among the main French oyster areas. The network monitored 46 sites in 2004, including the 7 new sites added in 2003. The network REMORA thus assess seasonal survival, growth and quality of cupped oysters. It is a tool for trend estimations, ecosystem management and a reference frame for scientific studies. Globally speaking, the year 2004 was a good year for oyster farming, with a low mortality and a fast growth. The rearing yield (survival x growth) reached 2.0 for adults instead of 1.8 usually. However, the meat index remained close to the average inter annual data.... |

The network IFREMER/REMORA has watched every year, since 1993, from February to December, mortality, growth and quality criteria of two oyster class-size ("juveniles" of the first-year c1ass and "adults" of the second year c1ass), distributed among various stations of the French oyster areas. This has provided a quite standard and simple annual assessment of the rearing results, generally tallied with professional observations. From year to year, data series have been obtained, from which mean values (references), chronological trends or spatial differences can be analysed. Results in Brittany, from 1993 to 1998, show that, in a "normal" year, 30 g oysters grow to 60-80 g at the end of the year, with a mortality rate of 10-15%. Mortality occures mainly in... |

(subtidal on-bottom rearings), has been the year of the gestation for the RISCO-QB project (Risks in shellfish farming, in baie de Quiberon). Discussions with various potential partners have resulted in the project drafting with 3 main objectives : - estimation of the trophic capacity of the bay and adjustment of the rearing biomass, - impact of sediment nearness upon on-bottom technique and adjustment of the rearing practices, - appraisal of the impact of these 2 factors (trophic capacity and sediment nearness) on the budget of the farming companies and their consequences in the management of the mortality risk. Concurrently with the project writing, pre-studies, mainly methodological, have been conducted in the bay since 2007 in order to investigate the... |

This network is a tool for trend estimations (geographic and chronological, on the national scale). With regard to the Breton stations of the network, the year 1999 showed a small increase of mortality rates, both in adults alter their transfer on the REMORA stations and in juveniles during the Summer season. this was particularly observed in Morlaix, Aber Benoît and Pen-Bé. Although it was better than 1998, the year 1999 was a poor year for growth, especially in North Brittany (62.5 g in... |

Giant scallops, Placopecten magellanicus, respond to the presence of starfish predators with an escape response consisting of a series of rapid valve adductions that allow the scallop to jump or swim away from the predator. To evaluate the coordination of the activity of the tonic and phasic muscles during such escape responses, we recorded their force production by attaching a force gauge to the shell of intact scallops and then stimulating the scallops with starfish. These recordings showed series of phasic contractions (claps) separated by prolonged tonic contractions. Numerous characteristics could be quantified from these recordings including the maximal force, mean force during the first minute, force, frequency and number of claps per series, as... |

The development of king scallop (Pecten maximus) culture in France has been subsidised by the State and the Brittany Region for the past 10 years. Technical progress has been made and the public authorities now wish to know if this activity is economically feasible. While continuing research to improve the performance of this type of shellfish culture (culture techniques and physiology), Ifremer (public institute for oceanological research) also undertook an economic assessment on costs, marketability and legal and social limitations. The study of the costs of production presented here was carried out by analysing a pilot farm. This approach helped detail the financial needs and the degree of profitability of scallop farming. |

The scallop is a filtering mollusc that feeds predominantly on phytoplankton. It lives on loose beds of maerl, sand or mud, most often between 5 and 40 metres deep. The scallop likes cool (7° to 20°C) and well oxygenated ocean waters. It does not tolerate desalination or emersion out of water. In France, there are two very closely related species: Pecten maximus in the English Channel and the Atlantic and Pecten jacobaeus in the Mediterranean. These are frequent species in French coastal waters. But the many deposits, considerably exploited, have rather thinned out over the last 20 or 30 years. |

Since 2000, the exploitation of the deep demersal fish (200-700 m) with the use of electric winches has been increasing in Reunion island ; and this has needed a new appraisal of yields (CPUE) and individual fish sizes, as indicators of the state of the fish stocks. A first survey has been carried out at the first half of 2011, in order to set up the comparison with a previous survey in 2000 on the West coast of Reunion island. Drops of yields and sizes could be pointed out, attesting the overexploitation of the commercial species (Fleury et al 2011). This present report displays the results of a second campaign, carried out in the second half of 2011 all around the island. 32 fishing trips have been conducted which have permitted 251 fishing operations.... |

(Not controled OCR) In recent years, scallop production throughout the world has been expanding at a fast rate, due to developments in aquaculture. Hanging as well as sea bed cultures produced good results in some countries. This latter method has been successful for Patinopeeten ye.ssoen.sis and Pecien novaezelandiae in Japan and New Zealand respectively. In Europe, only Peeten ma.ximus as a local species seems appropriate for development by a sea ranching production: the market demand is strong, the fisheries are closed due to over exploitation and hanging cultures are not economically feasible. Experiments in sea bed cultures started in the 1980s in France and extended to Ireland, Scotland and Norway. The technique involves the production of juveniles... |

The "sedimentary risk" has been identified since the mid-nineties in the Marennes Oléron Bay. The proximity of the sediment (from 0 to 15cms) increases the mortality rate. Depending on the year, mortality can be 10 to 20 % higher than in "high" conditions (50 to 70cms). These zootechnic results, gathered since 1996 on the working site of Ronces Perquis, lead to the research of a pathogenic agent or a toxic substance released by the sediment. Studies conducted between 2002 and 2003 [12, 18] did not allow the identification of any pathogenic agents and ruled out the infectious risk. In 2004, the chemical risk (sulphides, ammoniacal nitrogen) was studied on 4 sites (3 working sites + Quiberon). In 2004, the "on-bottom/off bottom" mortality model of the... |
