FACTORS INFLUENCING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES IN THE DAIRY INDUSTRY AgEcon
Rahelizatovo, Noro C.; Gillespie, Jeffrey M..
Best management practices (BMPs) consist of conservation methods promoted to reduce water pollution from agricultural activities. This study investigates the likely determinants of Louisiana dairy producers' decisions to voluntarily implement BMPs. Farm size, milk productivity, frequency of meetings with LCES, and risk aversion significantly influenced the increased adoption of BMPs.

Adoption of Technology, Management Practices, and Production Systems by U.S. Beef Cow-Calf Producers AgEcon
Pruitt, J. Ross; Gillespie, Jeffrey M.; Nehring, Richard F.; Qushim, Berdikul.
Using USDA’s Agricultural Resource Management Survey data, factors leading to the adoption of technology, management practices, and production systems by U.S. beef cow-calf producers are analyzed. Binary logit regression models are used to determine impacts of vertical integration; region of the U.S.; farm size, diversification, and tenure; and demographics on adoption decisions. Significant differences were found in adoption rates by region of the U.S., degree of vertical integration, and size of operation, suggesting the presence of economies of size and vertical economies of scope. Results also indicate high degrees of complementarity among technologies, management practices, and production systems.

Rotational grazing adoption in cattle production under a cost-share agreement: does uncertainty have a role in conservation technology adoption? AgEcon
Kim, Seon-Ae; Gillespie, Jeffrey M.; Paudel, Krishna P..
Rotational grazing has been promoted as a best management practice with environmental benefits and associated higher revenue. Its adoption rate has been relatively low. This study investigates the role of uncertainty in the adoption of rotational grazing with a cost-share by cattle producers. Mail survey results indicate that 63–71 per cent of cattle producers are uncertain about adoption with a government cost-share. The study suggests that the possibility of uncertainty should be considered in cases where willingness-to-pay is elicited in the context of adoption of technology.

THE EFFECT OF RISK AND AUTONOMY ON INDEPENDENT HOG PRODUCERS' CONTRACTING DECISIONS AgEcon
Gillespie, Jeffrey M.; Eidman, Vernon R..
The introduction of vertical coordination in the hog industry has provided producers with new business arrangements for raising hogs. While some researchers have elicited utility functions for hog producers on the basis of income risk, none have addressed autonomy, a factor which appears to be important in business arrangement selection for independent family hog operations. In this study, a method is developed for eliciting a multi-attribute function with attributes of income and autonomy. Utility functions are elicited for a group of Minnesota farrow-to-finish hog producers. For these producers, autonomy dominated risk as the most important attribute in business arrangement selection.

Measuring risk attitude of agricultural producers using a mail survey: how consistent are the methods? AgEcon
Fausti, Scott W.; Gillespie, Jeffrey M..
A mail survey is used to examine the consistency of alternative risk preference elicitation procedures using five commonly used methods. These elicitation procedures have been used in previous studies to characterise risk preference. Results show little consistency across procedures, supporting strength-of-preference studies. A general recommendation for mail surveys is the development of relatively easy-to-understand risk-preference elicitation procedures that are framed according to the situational construct in question.

EFFECT OF THE 1985 FARM BILL PROVISIONS ON FARMERS' SOIL CONSERVATION DECISIONS AgEcon
Gillespie, Jeffrey M.; Hatch, L. Upton; Duffy, Patricia A..
Conservation initiatives in the 1985 Farm Bill affected farmers' decisions regarding soil conservation. A farmer survey was conducted and a multiperiod mixed-integer programming model was developed to determine an optimal farm plan with choice of crop-tillage combinations and land retirement. Results indicate that farmers' incentives to reduce soil loss in the Sand Mountain region in Alabama are not substantially affected by provisions of the 1985 Farm Bill. The bid price for the Conservation Reserve Program will have to be considerably higher than 1988 levels to provide an incentive to remove land from production.

Consumer-Preferred Attributes of a Fresh Ground Beef and Turkey Product: A Conjoint Analysis AgEcon
Schupp, Alvin R.; Gillespie, Jeffrey M.; Prinyawiwatkul, Witoon; O'Neil, Carol E..
A random sample of 3,400 Louisiana households was surveyed by mail to determine their ratings for a number of product profiles involving a combined fresh ground beef and turkey product. The attributes and levels of the new product included form (fresh, frozen), identity of the packager (retailer, processor), percentage of beef in product (50,70,90), and price of the combined product as a percentage of ground beef (80,90,100). Based on 2,781 observations, the order of importance of the attributes were, in order of declining importance, content, form, price, and packager. Consumer utility was highly sensitive to the content of beef, with a higher content being preferred.

The Role of Goal Structure in Enterprise Selection in U.S. Agriculture AgEcon
Mishra, Ashok K.; Gillespie, Jeffrey M..
Farmers are likely to be motivated by alternative goals besides profit maximization. Goal structure is highly influential in farmer enterprise selection decisions. This paper addresses the roles of goal structure, location, financial situation, and socio-demographic variables and their influence on farmers' farm enterprise selection decisions. This study uses the 2003 Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS), a national farm-level data, and Tobit method to examine the impacts of goal structure and resource availability on enterprise choice. Results indicate that goal structure significantly influences enterprise selection. Farmers who indicated their primary reason for becoming a farm operator was to "Take over operation of the farm from a family...

Beef Producer Preferences and Purchase Decisions for Livestock Price Insurance AgEcon
Fields, Deacue; Gillespie, Jeffrey M..
Personal interviews were conducted with beef cattle producers in Louisiana to determine their preferences and purchase decisions for livestock price insurance. Conjoint analysis was utilized to determine the importance of selected attributes of insurance policies for these producers. The characteristics of producers who prefer given attributes were also identified. Producers rated products given four economic situations to evaluate. A two-limit tobit model was used to estimate the part worth utility values for each attribute. Univariate probit models were estimated to evaluate the influence of producer characteristics on purchase decisions.

THEORETICAL AND EMPIRICAL CONSIDERATIONS OF ELICITING PREFERENCES AND MODEL ESTIMATION IN CONJOINT ANALYSIS AgEcon
Harrison, R. Wes; Gillespie, Jeffrey M.; Fields, Deacue.
The theoretical underpinnings associated with eliciting consumer preferences and statistical properties of alternative models in conjoint analysis are examined. Results show that model selection makes little difference in the context of sign and significance of coefficients. However, results show that tobit is a better predictor of ordinal ranking relative to the probit model.
