Two populations of the Latin American shrimp Penaeus (Litopenaeus)stylirostris domesticated in Hawaii and in New Caledonia were previously shown to be genetically differentiated and proven highly inbred. In New Caledonia, where different Vibriosis affect shrimp production and antibiotic use is banned in growing ponds, the Hawaiian population was introduced to increase the allelic variability available for local shrimp farmers and start a genetic improvement program. Growth and survival rates of the two pure populations and the two-way F-1-hybrids obtained by breeding Hawaiian animals with New Caledonian animals were assessed in several simple experiments (earthen ponds, floating cages and experimental infection challenges) during two years on two... |

What is REMORA? REMORA −REseau MOllusques du département Ressources Aquacoles− (Aquaculture Resources Department Mollusc Network) is a surveillance network dedicated to the growth of hollow oysters Crassostrea gigas. In the past and in most production areas, observations were made on a regular basis. In 1993, homogenising experimental protocols between the different laboratories involved was decided, as well as using a common initial oyster batch, therefore organizing a network covering all of the French coasts. This network aims at providing, each year, the production's basic characteristics found in main oyster beds (growth reference). It also better characterizes variations and shows potential tendencies. |

The European flat oyster Ostrea edulis has been considered as the traditional French oyster for a very long time and has now nearly disappeared from our farms, as a consequence of the two successive epizootic of the Marteilia refringens parasite and Bonamia ostreae. The actual quasi monoculture of Crassostrea gigas has made necessary the search for a diversification in oyster culture, including the search for a new start of the indigenous flat oyster culture. The Ifremer has been conducting parallel works since 1985 in order to better understand the biology of the parasite as well as to try and select different lines of flat oyster resistant to Bonamia ostreae. |
