SEASONAL OLIGOPOLY POWER IN THE D'ANJOU PEAR INDUSTRY AgEcon
Winfree, Jason A.; McCluskey, Jill J.; Mittelhammer, Ronald C.; Gutman, Paula.
We estimate seasonal oligopoly power at a disaggregated variety level in the D'Anjou pear market. Our data spans 1993 to 2000, during which time imported pears became more prevalent in the U.S. market. The range of monthly industry-conduct-parameter magnitudes is 0.034 to 0.195 and is most pronounced when the fresh D'Anjou pear crop first becomes available in the earliest months of the marketing year. Possible reasons for timing of oligopoly power relate to the growth of imported pears during the latter portion of marketing year. In addition, oligopoly power may diminish during the marketing year as pears in storage decline in quality.

DISTRIBUTION OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT, CHILD LABOR AND POVERTY IN INDIA AgEcon
Rahman, Tauhidur; Mittelhammer, Ronald C..
This paper contributes to the growing debate on regional economic inequality and polarization in India. The specific objectives of this paper are to: (1) analyze regional development disparities amongst various states in India to determine if they are on a convergent course; (2) analyze the evolution of regional inequalities amongst states with respect to a number of socioeconomic indicators and factors that have been suggested to affect the incidence of child labor; (3) investigate and test empirically whether polarization is taking place in Indian states; and (4) investigate whether regional indices of human development and child labor incidence follow similar patterns. Using a consistent data series and applying a number of recently developed measures,...

A LATENT VARIABLE MIMIC APPROACH TO INFERRING THE QUALITY OF LIFE AgEcon
Rahman, Tauhidur; Mittelhammer, Ronald C.; Wandschneider, Philip R..
This paper makes three principal contributions. First, we propose a new estimator for the unobservable variable models with endogenous causes. We show that under factor analysis type of assumptions, Robinson and Ferrara (1977)'’s procedure is not fully efficient, and a more efficient procedure can be obtained by merging Robinson and Ferrara'’ procedure with that in Joreskog and Goldberger (1975) procedure. The asymptotic properties of the new estimator are compared with these two estimators and results indicate that, with our mixture approach, significant efficiency gains can be achieved. Second, we model the Quality of life (QOL) as an unobservable or latent link variable between observable causes and observable effects, which mitigates problem of bias,...

INFORMATION THEORETIC ALTERNATIVES TO TRADITIONAL SIMULTANEOUS EQUATIONS ESTIMATORS IN THE PRESENCE OF HETEROSKEDASTICITY AgEcon
Marsh, Thomas L.; Mittelhammer, Ronald C..
Finite sampling properties of information theoretic estimators of the simultaneous equations model, including maximum empirical likelihood, maximum empirical exponential likelihood, and maximum log Euclidean likelihood, are examined in the presence of selected forms of heteroskedasticity. Extensive Monte Carlo experiments are used to compare finite sample performance of Wald, Likelihood ratio, and Lagrangian multiplier tests constructed from information theoretic estimators to those from traditional generalized method of moments.

Semiparametric Estimation and Inference in Multinomial Choice Models AgEcon
Fahs, Rafic; Cardell, N. Scott; Mittelhammer, Ronald C..
The purpose of this paper is to incorporate semiparametric alternatives to maximum likelihood estimation and inference in the context of unordered multinomial response data when in practice there is often insufficient information to specify the parametric form of the function linking the observables to the unknown probabilities. We specify the function linking the observables to the unknown probabilities using a very general flexible class of functions belonging to the Pearson system of cumulative distribution equations. In this setting we consider the observations as arising from a multinomial distribution characterized by one of the CDFs in the Pearson system. Given this situation, it is possible to utilize the concept of unbiased estimating functions...

A MATRIX OF DEMAND ELASTICITIES FOR FRESH FRUIT AgEcon
Price, David W.; Mittelhammer, Ronald C..
A matrix of direct, cross and income demand elasticities at farm level for 14 fresh fruits was estimated using the mixed estimation technique. Prior estimates were derived from past research and application of the symmetry relation, cross induction and subjective judgment. There were no statistically significant conflicts between the sample and prior information. Even though estimation efficiency increased with the mixed technique, only a limited number of cross elasticities could be estimated.

SEMIPARAMETRIC BAYESIAN ANALYSIS OF SIMULTANEOUS SYSTEMS WITH AN APPLICATION TO JAPANESE MEAT DEMAND AgEcon
Xi, Jing; Heckelei, Thomas; Mittelhammer, Ronald C..
This paper motivates and applies a variant of the Bayesian Bootstrap Multivariate Regression by Heckelei and Mittelhammer (2003) to a Japanese meat demand specification with endogenous regressors. The methodology is first given an alternative and more elegants motivation and then extended to incorporate microtheoretic restrictions and to apply in the context of a simultaneous equation models. The results of the application are compared to results based on an earlier approach used by Heckelei, Mittelhammer, and Wahl (1996).

Risk Aversion, Prudence, and the Three-Moment Decision Model for Hedging AgEcon
Chen, Xiaomei; Wang, H. Holly; Mittelhammer, Ronald C..
The linear two-moment mean-variance (MV) model has been widely used in finance and economic decision analysis as an approximation of Von Neumann-Morgenstern expected utility (EU) model. The introduction of third or higher moments not only can improve the accuracy of the approximation, but is also suitable to represent investors¡¯ skewness preference (prudence) with the latter supported by empirical evidence. The goal of this paper is to develop a general MVS model and compare it and the traditional MV model against the EU model in the setting of an individual producer hedging in the futures market. Results show: 1) the derived linear MVS model maintains the analytical convenience of MV model, 2) it can generate different results as MV, 3) it approximate...

MODELING NONNEGATIVITY VIA TRUNCATED LOGISTIC AND NORMAL DISTRIBUTIONS: AN APPLICATION TO RANCH LAND PRICE ANALYSIS AgEcon
Xu, Feng; Mittelhammer, Ronald C.; Torell, L. Allen.
This study presents an empirical method of modeling the nonnegativity of dependent variables using truncated logistic and normal disturbance distributions. The method is applied in estimating a ranch land hedonic price function. Results show that the degree of truncation is significant.

A STRUCTURAL-EQUATION GME ESTIMATOR AgEcon
Marsh, Thomas L.; Mittelhammer, Ronald C.; Cardell, N. Scott.
A generalized maximum entropy estimator is developed for the linear simultaneous equations systems model. We provide results on large and small sample properties of the estimator. Empirical results illustrate efficiency advantages of the generalized maximum entropy estimator proposed in this study over traditional estimators (e.g., 2SLS and 3SLS).

Measuring the Impact of Globalization on the Well-being of the Poor: Methodology and an Application to Africa AgEcon
Rahman, Tauhidur; Mittelhammer, Ronald C..
Whereas a large number of empirical studies have been devoted to analyzing the relationship between measures of income and globalization (defined by openness to international trade), much less attention has been paid to the analysis of well-being for the various subgroups of population and their causal associations with globalization. To address this gap in the literature, this paper first analyzes the quality of life (QOL) of 'poor' and 'non-poor' population segments of 40 African countries over a period of 1980-2000, and then examines their causal association with openness to trade. In order to understand the impact of openness to trade on the well-being of poor, we assume the causal chain Openness„_ Income„_ Poverty„_ Well-being of poor and empirically...
