Bache, Francois; Gorini, C; Olivet, Jean-louis; Rabineau, Marina; Aslanian, Daniel; Baztan, Juan; Moulin, Maryline.
The Messinian erosional surface that can be observed on the Mediterranean margins is a good marker of the relative lowering of the sea level which happened during the Messinian salinity crisis. The estimate of the volume of Miocene sediments on the Gulf of Lion platform gives a minimum eroded volume of 5 300 Km . The eroded layer reaches one kilometre in numerous places (Figures 2 and 3). This volume demonstrates the erosion of the continental shelf in the Gulf of Lion and does not include the eroded volumes in the Rhone valley, the surroundings of the Gulf of Lion and on the slope. Thus, this minimum eroded volume is logically transferred towards the basin.

Upper miocene salt layer in the western mediterranean basin ArchiMer
Auzende, Jean-marie; Bonnin, Jean; Olivet, Jean-louis; Pautot, Guy; Mauffret, Alain.
"Flexotir" profiles in the Western Mediterranean Basin reveal a uniform salt layer, overlain by a sedimentary sequence affected by diapirism. The salt has been given an Upper Miocene age. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Messinian Events: View from the Provence Basin (Gulf of Lion,Western Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Bache, François; Gorini, C; Olivet, Jean-louis; Rabineau, Marina; Aslanian, Daniel; Suc, J.p..
Though the late Miocene "Messinian Salinity Crisis" has been intensely researched along the circum- Mediterranean basins, few studies have focused on the central part of the Mediterranean Basin and, especially, the pre-salt deposits. Within the Western Mediterranean, the Gulf of Lion is exceptional in that its sedimentary strata have not been significantly deformed. In addition, the Gulf of Lion is characterized by a relatively constant subsidence with continuous accommodation space for sediment accumulation. This configuration, together with the availability of a wealth of offshore information (seismic profiles, boreholes), enables us to precisely describe the sedimentary geometries on the margin and in the central basin. This study gives new elements for...

40 AR/39 AR ages for the alkaline volcanism and the basement of Gorringe Bank, North atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Feraud, Gilbert; Gastaud, Janine; Auzende, Jean-marie; Olivet, Jean-louis; Cornen, Guy.
Gorringe Bank is situated on the Europe-Africa plate boundary at the eastern end of the Azores-Gibraltar fracture zone. It has two summits. Gettysburg Bank to the southwest and Ormonde Bank to the northeast. We applied the 40Ar/39AR stepwise heating method to date six samples of the alkaline volcanic rocks. Two gabbros from the Ormonde Bank and a dolerite from the Gettysburg Bank. The results suggest that the alkaline volcanism lasted probably for less than 6 Ma(66-60 Ma). Although the nature of this volcanism precludes any subduction feature during its setting. the alkaline volcanism of Ormonde is probably linked to Upper Cretaceous/Eocene compressive tectonic events. The basement rocks of Gorringe Bank reveal disturbed 40Ar/39Ar age spectra. One...

Auzende, Jean-marie; Charvet, J; Le Lann, Alain; Lepichon, X; Monteiro, Jh; Nicolas, Anne; Olivet, Jean-louis; Ribeiro, A.
An almost complete geological section of the oceanic crust and upper mantle outcropping on the flanks of the Gorringe Bank has been surveyed during eight dives of SP 3000 Cyana submersible. The section which is slightly tilted to the east bears a close resemblance to an ophiolitic complex. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Olivet, Jean-louis; Le Pichon, Xavier; Laubier, Lucien.
The cold waters from the Norwegian Sea are the main source of the underflow system in the northern Atlantic Ocean (10) (pl. 1, fig. 1b). The role of these currents in the formation of large sediment ripples has been demonstrated in some recent studies [(2), (3)]. As in the southern Atlantic Ocean, the observations suggested that their influence had been of importance since the Eocene era (6). From a sedimentological point of view, it appears that the Gibbs fracture (4) represents a very important feature in this system; this structure both forms a deep opening through the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and a dam across the abyssal plain to the northeast of Newfoundland. This dam, which is still active today, though partly flooded, must have been continuous from the...

A new starting point for the history of the central Atlantic ArchiMer
Sahabi, Mohamed; Aslanian, Daniel; Olivet, Jean-louis.
A new starting point for the history of the central Atlantic. The first oceanic crust in the central Atlantic is usually thought to have a Middle Jurassic age. The new interpretation of the two key parameters, the African homologue of the East Coast Magnetic Anomaly and the situation of the Triassic salt basin of Morocco and Novia Scotia, shows that this age was underestimated by about 20 Ma. In our kinematic reconstruction, the first oceanic crust begins at the Late Sinemurian. This difference in age is crucial for the evolution of those margins and we discuss here its consequences.

Messinian evaporite deposition during sea level rise in the Gulf of Lions (Western Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Bache, Francois; Gargani, Julien; Suc, Jean-pierre; Gorini, Christian; Rabineau, Marina; Popescu, Speranta-maria; Leroux, Estelle; Do Couto, Damien; Jouannic, Gwenael; Rubino, Jean-loup; Olivet, Jean-louis; Clauzon, Georges; Dos Reis, Antonio Tadeu; Aslanian, Daniel.
The Messinian Salinity Crisis resulted from desiccation of the Mediterranean Sea after its isolation from the Atlantic Ocean at the end of the Miocene. Stratal geometry tied to borehole data in the Gulf of Lions show that the pre-crisis continental shelf has been eroded during a major sea-level fall and that sediments from this erosion have been deposited in the basin. This detrital package is onlapped by high amplitude seismic reflectors overlain by the “Messinian Salt” and the “Upper Evaporites”. Towards the shelf, the transition between regressive deposits and overlying onlapping sediments is characterised by a wave-ravinement surface, suggesting that a significant part of the onlapping reflectors and overlying Messinian Evaporites were deposited during...

ArchiMer
Auzende, Jean-marie; Olivet, Jean-louis; Bonnin, Jean.
From the study of continuous seismic reflection profiles (Flexotir) we have revealed a marked morphological contrast between the Northern Algerian margin and the other margins of the Balearic basin. Such a difference is made particularly clear by a downwarping of the sedimentary layers at the limit of the Algerian margin. This downwarping could be explained by the existence of a trench being formed by compression. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Bonnin, Jean; Olivet, Jean-louis; Auzende, Jean-marie.
