Cortes,Diego Fernando Marmolejo; Santa-Catarina,Renato; Azevedo,Alinne Oliveira Nunes; Poltronieri,Tathianne Pastana de Sousa; Vettorazzi,Julio Cesar Fiorio; Moreira,Nádia Fernandes; Ferreguetti,Geraldo Antônio; Ramos,Helaine Christine Cancela; Viana,Alexandre Pio; Pereira,Messias Gonzaga.
ABSTRACT: The selection of superior Carica papaya (L) genotypes depends on the availability of genetic variability and on the favorable and simultaneous response of the genotypes to those traits of most interest. However, manual phenotyping (MP) demands intensive labor, is time-consuming and expensive. The aim of the current study is to access the efficiency of image-based phenotyping (IBP) in estimating genetic parameters and in selecting F4 recombinant inbred lines. The genetic parameters and values were estimated in accordance with the REML/BLUB procedure and combined selection using the selection index based on standardized genetic values. The majority of traits accessed through IBP showed experimental coefficients of variation similar to those found...

Novel approach to the selection of Psidium guajava genotypes using latent traits to bypass multicollinearity Scientia Agricola
Silva,Flavia Alves da; Correa,Caio Cezar Guedes; Carvalho,Beatriz Murizini; Viana,Alexandre Pio; Preisigke,Sandra da Costa; Amaral Júnior,Antônio Teixeira do.
ABSTRACT: Multicollinearity is a very common problem in studies that employ path analysis in agronomic crops, which generates unrealistic results and erroneous interpretations. This study was aimed at assessing the path analysis in data obtained from guava tree full-sib based on modelling multiple regressions applying latent variables to neutralize the effects of multicollinearity. Seven explanatory variables were measured – fruit mass (FM), fruit length (FL), fruit diameter (FD), mesocarp thickness (MT), peel thickness (PT), pulp mass (PM), total number of fruits (NTF) –, plus the main dependent variable, total yield per plant (YIELD). In accordance with the multicollinearity scenario, eleven values were tested with the addition of the constant K to the...

Breeding new sugarcane clones by mixed models under genotype by environmental interaction Scientia Agricola
Gonçalves,Gustavo Menezes; Viana,Alexandre Pio; Amaral Junior,Antônio Teixeira do; Resende,Marcos Deon Vilela de.
Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is one of the most important crops cultivated in the tropics and subtropics and plays a significant economic and environmental role in Brazil. Twentyfour new clones were evaluated in different locations as potential models for recommendation as new varieties. The mixed model methodology, using the harmonic mean of the relative performance of genetic values (MHPRVG), facilitated the analysis of genotypic stability and adaptability, culminating in the recommendation of clones for each location. MHPRVG ranked clones RB92579, RB867515, SP81-3250, RB947520 and RB931530 as the best five, and, additionally, clones with greater genotypic potential were identified for each test in the six localities.

Cortes,Diego Fernando Marmolejo; Catarina,Renato Santa; Barros,Gislanne Brito de Araújo; Arêdes,Fernanda Abreu Santana; Silveira,Silvaldo Felipe da; Ferreguetti,Geraldo Antônio; Ramos,Helaine Christine Cancela; Viana,Alexandre Pio; Pereira,Messias Gonzaga.
ABSTRACT Manual phenotyping for papaya Carica papaya (L) breeding purposes limits the evaluation of a great number of plants and hampers selection of superior genotypes. This study aimed to validate two methodologies for the phenotyping of morpho-agronomic plant traits using image analysis and fruit traits through image processing. In plants of the ‘THB’ variety and ‘UENF/Caliman-01’ hybrid two images (A and B) were analyzed to estimate commercial and irregularly shaped fruits. Image A was also used in the estimation of plant height, stem diameter and the first fruit insertion height. In ‘THB’ fruits, largest and smallest diameters, length, and volume were estimated by using a caliper and image processing (IP). Volume was obtained by water column...

A putative mutant of a self-compatible yellow passion fruit with the corona color as a phenotypic marker Bragantia
Souza,Margarete Magalhães; Viana,Alexandre Pio; Pereira,Telma Nair Santana.
Yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa) is a self-incompatible crop with purple corona flowers (PCF). Plants exhibiting white corona flowers (WCF) were observed in an experimental field located in Campos dos Goytacazes - RJ, Brazil. This study was performed in order to test the fertility of these genotypes through studies of in vivo pollination, meiotic behavior and pollen viability. Using in vivo pollination, the mean fruit set percentage, obtained from self-pollinations at the moment that flowers open, was 70.83% in WCF and 0% in PCF. In terms of cytological analysis, for both kinds of plants, WCF and PCF, the meiotic behavior was considered regular, considering the high meiotic index estimated for both of them, 96.3% and 97.7%, and pollen...

Development of superior lines of papaya from the Formosa group using the pedigree method and REML/Blup procedure Bragantia
Cortes,Diego Fernando Marmolejo; Santa-Catarina,Renato; Vettorazzi,Julio Cesar Fiorio; Ramos,Helaine Christine Cancela Ramos; Viana,Alexandre Pio; Pereira,Messias Gonzaga.
ABSTRACT Developing superior lines based on a simultaneous response from many traits of agronomic importance is a fundamental strategy to expand papaya cultivar supply, mainly the much-needed cultivars belonging to group Formosa. Our goal was to associate the pedigree method with REML/Blup procedure to select plants of progenies F2:3 with superior agronomic performance. The variance components and genetic parameters were estimated using REML approach, and the genetic values were predicted using Blup methodology. The combined selection was performed using the IG2 selection index based on weights associated with agronomic values to indicate the best progenies and lines. The heritability estimates of progeny mean were high in most traits and evidenced...

Structural, hystochemical and cytochemical characteristics of the stigma and style in Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa (Passifloraceae) BABT
Souza,Margarete Magalhães; Pereira,Telma Nair Santana; Dias,Angelo José Burla; Ribeiro,Beatriz Ferreira; Viana,Alexandre Pio.
Studies were carried out on anatomic aspects of the stigma and style of yellow passionfruit. The stigmatic style consisted of papillae, many layers of sub-epidermal cells and a central transmitting tissue. The stigma was of dry, unbranched, multicellular multiseriate papillate type and the cells were highly vacuolated with walls that were relatively thin consisting of compactly arranged fibrils. The style was solid with a central core of transmitting tissue that had intercellular spaces containing a matrix that included polysaccharidic and lipidic substances. During development, cells of the transmitting tissue were arranged compactly while the mature pistil showed cells with a little more loosely arranged intercellular spaces. Both the mature stigma and...

Genetic control on morphoagzronomic traits in snap bean BABT
Silva,Marlon Peres da; Amaral Júnior,Antônio Teixeira do; Rodrigues,Rosana; Pereira,Messias Gonzaga; Viana,Alexandre Pio.
Five divergent snap bean accessions from the vegetables germplasm bank at UENF and their ten diallel hybrids were evaluated to inheritance on five morphoagronomic traits using Hayman's methodology (1954). The results showed that additive effects were predominant for pod weight per plant, number of seeds per pod, height of the insertion of the first pod and number of days to flowering while non-additive effects were more important for number of pods per plant. The best strategy to be adopted was the use of these acessions in an intrapopulation breeding program aiming the obtaintion of superior segregants. For pod numbers the indicated strategy would be an interpopulational breeding procedure, to exploite the heterosis related to the non-additive effects....
