Using Multiple Calibration Sets to Improve the Quantitative Accuracy of Partial Least Squares (PLS) Regression on Open-Path Fourier Transform Infrared (OP/FT-IR) Spectra of Ammonia over Wide Concentration Ranges 18
Shao, Limin; Bianxia, Liu; Griffiths R, Peter; Leytem, A.B..
A technique of using multiple calibration sets in partial least squares regression (PLS) was proposed to improve the quantitative determination of ammonia from open-path Fourier transform infrared spectra. The spectra were measured near animal farms, and the path-integrated concentration of ammonia fluctuated from nearly zero to a high of about 1000 ppm-m. The PLS regression using a single calibration set over such a large concentration range had decreased quantitative accuracy due to the nonlinear relationship between concentration and absorbance. In the PLS regression with multiple calibration sets, each calibration set accounted for a smaller concentration range, which significantly decreased the serious nonlinearity problem in PLS regression with a...

Mt. St. Helens Ash: Considerations of its fallout on rangelands 18
Sneva, F.A.; Britton, C.M.; Mayland, H.F.; Buckhouse, J.; Evans, R.A.; Young, J.A.; Vavra, M..
Field and laboratory studies were conducted on volcanic ash from Yakima, Moses Lake, Spokane, Washington, and Moscow, Idaho, three weeks after the May 18, 1980, eruption of Mt. St. Helens in southwestern Washington. These studies examined 1) the chemical, physical, and water retentivity properties of the ash, 2) the effect of the ash upon germination and emergence of crested wheatgrass and cheatgrass, 3) the impact of ash upon in vitro digestion of common forages fed to cattle and the rate-of-passage of ash in steers, and 4) the influence of the ash layer on water infiltration into a range soil and the amount of sediments in the runoff water. In addition to the above short term studies, small field plots of...

Effect of composting on the fate of steroids in beef cattle manure 18
Bartlelt-Hunt, S.L.; De Vivo, S; Johnson, L.C.; Snow, D.D.; Kranz, W.L.; Mader, T.L.; Shapiro, C.A.; Van Donk, S.J.; Shelton, D.P.; Zhang, T.C.; Tarkalson, D.D..
In this study, the fate of steroid hormones in beef cattle manure composting is evaluated. The fate of 16 steroids and metabolites was evaluated in composted manure from beef cattle administered growth promotants and from beef cattle with no steroid hormone implants. The fate of estrogens (primary detected as estrone), androgens, progesterone, and the fusarium metabolite and implant a-zearalanol were monitored in manure compost piles. First-order decay rates were calculated for steroid half-lives in compost and ranged from 8 days for androsterone to 69 days for 4-androsterone. Other steroid concentration data did not fit first-order decay models which may indicate that other microbial processes may result in steroid production or synthesis in...

Metals in waste foundry sands and an evaluation of their leaching and transport to groundwater 18
Alves, B.S.Q.; Dungan, R.S.; Carnin, R.L.P; Galvez, R.; de Carvalho Pinto, C.R.S..
While most waste molding foundry sands (WFSs) are not hazardous in nature, regulatory agencies are often reluctant to permit their beneficial use in agricultural and geotechnical applications due to concerns over metal leaching. The objective of this study was to quantify total and Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) metals in 16 waste sands from Brazilian ferrous foundries and assess their potential to leach metals to groundwater using a probabilistic model developed by the U.S. EPA. Total and TCLP metal concentrations in the non-hazardous sands fell within ranges as reported in the literature, although some of the leachate concentrations were found to exceed drinking water and groundwater maximum contaminant levels MCLs. Leachate values...

Dairy Manure Nitrogen Availability in Eroded and Noneroded Soil for Sugarbeet Followed by Small Grains 18
Lentz, R.D.; Lehrsch, G.A.; Brown, Bradford; Johnson-Maynard, J.; Leytem, A.B..
Efficient recycling of abundant manure resources from regional dairy industries in the semiarid West requires a better understanding of N availability in manure-amended soils. We measured net N mineralization using buried bags, and crop biomass, N uptake, and yields for sprinkler-irrigated, whole (noneroded) and eroded Portneuf soils (coarse-silty, mixed, superactive, mesic Durinodic Xeric Haplocalcid) subject to a one-time manure application. Treatments included a control, fertilizer, two rates of composted dairy manure (28.4, 64.3 Mg ha–1, dry wt.), and two rates of stockpiled dairy manure (23.3, 45.7 Mg ha–1, dry wt.) applied in the fall before the Year 1 cropping season. Plots were planted to sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris L.), winter wheat (Triticum...
