New and interesting Microlepidoptera from the Netherlands, mainly in 1984. The following species are recorded here for the first time from the Netherlands: Trifucula maxima Klimesch, Leucospilapteryx omissella (Stainton), Argyresthia (Blastotere) trifasciata (Staudinger) , Teleiodes wagae (Nowicki), Chionodes tragicella (Heyden), Gelechia muscosella Zeller, Epinotia thapsiana (Zeller) and Celypha rosaceana (Schläger). Monochroa niphognatha Gozmány has also been recorded for the first time, but was misidentified previously in our country as M. tetragonella Stainton. The fist authentic Dutch specimen of the latter species is recorded her now. Bucculatrix antispilella Spuler is removed from the Dutch list. The known distributions of five Tinaeidae in the... |

The fieldcricket Gryllus campestris in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen (Orthoptera) In 1997 and 2000 some fieldcrickets (Gryllus campestris) were observed in a grassland within a forest (Clingse Bos) in Zeeuws- Vlaanderen. These are the first records since the 1950’s in this area. Because no fieldcrickets were observed in 1998 and 1999 it is thought that the animals have migrated from a nearby population just across the Belgian border. The topsoil of the grassland has been removed locally to expose the sandy soil, to increase the chances for the fieldcricket to establish a population. Together with the rediscovery of a population in Schouwen the future for the fieldcricket in the southwest of the Netherlands looks a bit more promising. |

Distribution and ecology of the chironomid Glyptotendipes ospeli in the Netherlands (Diptera: Chironomidae) This paper adresses the ecology, biology and distribution of the larvae of the chironomid Glyptotendipes ospeli Contreras-Lichtenberg, 1999. No information is available on the ecology and biology of the adults. Glyptotendipes ospeli was described in 1999 after larvae collected in Amsterdam (the Netherlands) had been reared to adults. There is only one record from outside the Netherlands: a larva collected in Pripyat River (Belarus). In the Netherlands, larvae of this species have so far been recorded on 36 localities. Locally it can be rather common. Most records originate from standing, medium-sized, shallow waters in cities, e.g. ponds in city... |

Papilio haliphron naias Doh. 1 ♀ Soemba, Dr. K. W. DAMMERMAN leg. 1925. This specimen is remarkable by its fiery-red cellular and circumcellular spots on the hind wings. Euploea gelderi elwesi Doh. 2 ♂♂ 1 ♀ N. W. Soemba, Laora 100 M. IV/1925. As far as I know only the females have been captured. The males of this rare subspecies resemble very much those from Flores, what is not the case with the females, easily recognizable by the large transcellular whitish spots on the fore wings. Characteristic in the males are the bluish submarginal spots, of which the subapical ones are very prominent and connected together. In contradiction with the data by DOHERTY and FRUHSTORFER these specimens have been captured by Dr. K. W. DAMMERMAN on a height of 100 M. Euploea... |

Diopsis malawiensis spec. nov. and D. vanbruggeni spec. nov. are described from Malawi. Subgeneric grouping of Diopsis Linnaeus, 1775, is briefly discussed, but the genus awaits revision. A redescription is given of Diopsis micronotata Brunett i, 1926, from the D.R. of Congo, as this species might be confused with D. vanbruggeni. The two new species and D. micronotata are closely related and are tentatively placed in the absens Brunett i group. Diopsis surcoufi Séguy, 1955, from Mozambique and Tanzania, is redescribed because of its superficial resemblance to D. malawiensis. All four species are characterised by tiny, but distinct, apical or subapical wing spots. In D. malawiensis, D. micronotata and D. vanbruggeni, eye span is, in absolute and relative... |

A new record of Microdon devius in the central part of the province of Limburg (Diptera: Syrphidae) In 1997 a male of the hoverfly Microdon devius (Linnaeus, 1761) was collected near Weert, in the central part of the province of Limburg in the Netherlands. The only other record from the same area was from the Meynweg in 1990. The nearest population in the Netherlands of this rare species is found in the southernmost part of Limburg. The heath vegetation at the site near Weert harbours a relatively large population of the ant Lasius flavus, the possible host of the larvae of M. devius. |

A new species belonging to the genus Proxylastodoris Heiss & Popov, 2002, P. kuscheli spec. nov., of the subfamily Xylastodorinae Barber, 1920 (Heteroptera: Thaumastocoridae) is described from New Caledonia. It is the first recent record outside the western Hemisphere of the Xyalstodorinae and is the largest known member of the family Thaumastocoridae. The new species was collected on inflorescences of the native New Caledonian palm species Burretiokentia vieillardii (Brongn. & Gris) Pichi-Serm. The habitat, collecting methods, host plant and biology of the new species are described. The biogeography of the Thaumastocoridae and Xylastodorinae is discussed and suggestions for further research are proposed. This discovery is characterised as the... |

With the kind permission of the Director of the Leiden Museum and the able assistance of Mr. H. C. BLÖTE, to whom I am much indebted for his services; some hundreds of specimens of undetermined Sumatran Carabidae have, during the past few months, been sent to me for indentification. Among these I have found examples of one new genus and ten new species, which are described in the succeeding pages. Some of these species were represented only in the Leiden Museum, but of others I found specimens in the collection of the F. M. S. Museum, Kuala Lumpur, while my own collection contained examples of four of them. Some of the type specimens are in the Leiden Museum, some in the British Museum, and some in my collection, as mentioned at the close of the respective... |

A new species of damselfish Chromis lubbocki (Teleostei: Pomacentridae) from the Cape Verde Archipelago is described. The following combination of characters separates C. lubbocki from other eastern Atlantic Chromis: Dorsal fin rays XIV, 12; pectoral fin rays 20 (occasionally 19 or 21); transverse scale rows 27 (rarely 26); scales below lateral-line 9, scales between terminal lateral-line scale and dorsal base 1 1/2; 22-24 gill-rakers on lower limb of first gill-arch; second anal spine longer than longest anal ray; length of second anal spine 18.0-22.2% SL; pelvic fins short, length of longest ray 23.0-29.6% SL; fins yellowish in life. A key to the five species of Chromis now known from the eastern Atlantic is provided and their nomenclature discussed.... |

The identity of Stigmella zelleriella (Snellen, 1875) n. comb. is fixed by designation of a lectotype. Nepticula repentiella Wolff, 1955, and Nepticula lappovimella Svensson, 1976, are placed in synonomy with S. zelleriella, which is redescribed and discriminated from resembling species. It appears to have a northern distribution, occurring in sand-dunes on the Salix repens L.-complex and on moors in Scandinavia on Salix lapponum L. The related S. benanderella (Wolff, 1955), which occurs on the same foodplants, is also diagnosed. |
