Introduction. The measurements given in this note and following notes are expressed in hundredths of length and are made by means of dividers. They are taken about in the same way as used by the American authors. The length is measured from the tip of the snout to the end of the last vertebra. The depth is taken at the deepest part of the body, the depth of caudal peduncle halfway the peduncle. Length of head from tip of snout to the upper end of the posterior edge of operculum. Length of snout from its tip to the anterior margin of the orbit. Width of interorbital space is measured with the dividers pinched tightly between the bony orbits. Diameter of orbit is measured longitudinally. Distance from snout to D 1 from the tip of the snout to the insertion... |

A collection of 561 specimens of East Asian freshwater fishes has recently been presented to the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden by Mr. A. Werner, Munich, a well known collector and naturalist. A close examination of the present material provided several interesting data, which are given below, while one sample proved to belong to a species and genus new to science. The localities given by Mr. Werner are : Colombo, Calcutta, Bangkok, and Singapore, but some of the Singapore material seems to have been imported, presumably from Sumatra or Borneo. Kryptopterus bicirrhis (C. V.) 18 ex., Singapore, probably 1956, 38-73 (46-87) mm. Occasionally the name Cryptopterus is still used for the present species. The original name was given by Bleeker... |

The ichthyological collections brought together in various parts of New Guinea by staff members of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in 1954 and 1955 (cf. Boeseman, 1963), contain a series of scorpion-fishes which are here described as a new species, representing a new genus. Cheroscorpaena genus novum Mainly characterized by the, in the Scorpaenidae unique, pectoral fins, which consist of nine rays connected by a membrane, followed ventrally by three entirely detached simple rays of about the same length as the main fins. The type and hitherto only species of this genus is: Cheroscorpaena tridactyla species nova (pl. 1) D XIII. 7 or 8, A III. 6 or 7, Ρ i. 8-i-i-i, V I. 5, C 8 to 10 (branched rays only), gill-rakers on outer branchial arch 7 or 8 +... |

Within the thelodont dominated fauna of Ramsåsa, site C, Skåne, southern Sweden (Ludlow, Whitcliffian), the scales of the Thelodus parvidens group outnumber those of the combined T. sculptilis-T. admirabilis groups, some specimens of which are indistinguishable. Scale forms that might belong to one of several Thelodus taxa are designated as forma baltica (new form), forma T. radiosus Lehman, and forma T. ramosus Lehman, whereas forma T. querceus Lehman is introduced to cover a particular (heterogeneous?) group of monocuspid scales previously assigned to T. trilobatus Hoppe. Among the acanthodians, Nostolepis striata scales predominate. The checklist of N. striata trunk scales is extended to 62 characters. The smallest nostolepid teeth known so far are... |

INTRODUCTION In 1954, during a visit to Hollandia, western New Guinea, it was rumoured that sharks had been observed in the fresh water of Jamoer Lake, at a distance by effluent river of about 130 km from the Arafoera Sea. For further information on the locality, including a map of the area, I refer to the first note in the present series (Boeseman, 1963: 231, fig. 6). With eagerness we welcomed an opportunity provided by Rear Admiral (at the time Captain) G. B. Fortuyn, then Commander-in-Chief Naval Forces Netherlands New Guinea, to pay a short visit to the isolated lake. All necessary facilities, including transportation and maintenance, were kindly furnished by the Royal Netherlands Naval Air Service and the Royal Marines. Accompanied by my colleagues... |

From the "Naturhistorisches Museum" at Basle I received a collection of Gobioid fishes for identification. This collection was made in interesting localities in the eastern part of the Indo-Australian Archipelago, Islands east of New Guinea (Bismarck Archipelago), Polynesia and Australia. I am very much obliged to Dr. J . Roux for sending me the collection for identification. It consists of the following material: Glossogobius giuris (H.B.) 2 sp. Katherine riv. N . Australia, Prof. Handschin 1932. 1 sp. Rotti Isl., Sept. 1935, Dr. A . BÜhler. Awaous stamineus (Val.) 2 sp. Rotti Isl. in rivers, Sept. 1935, Dr. A. BÜhler. Ctenogobius frenatus (Gthr.) 5 sp. Opinions are divided in relation to what generical name has priority, Heliacus or Torinia. In proof of this I will quote, leaving aside those of many others, the opinions of two authorities. The opinion of Tomlin (1928, p. 333), however, is quite different: "Gray in Proc. Zool. Soc., 1847, Ρ· 151, gives his own genus Torinia precedence, quoting it as of 1840 and 1842.... |

In 1953, Mr. E. C. Stol, naturalist at Leiden, kindly placed at my disposal a small collection of Surinam freshwater aquarium fishes. A second collection, consisting of freshwater and marine specimens from Surinam, mainly collected by Dr. D. C. Geijskes and Mr. H. W. Lijding (Fishery Department), was received during 1954. As the two collections proved to contain several interesting specimens belonging to species not yet reported from Surinam, the following enumeration is given. To the measurements of specimens with damaged caudal fins the mark is added. Dasyatis guttata (Bl.; Schn.) 1 ex., near lightship Surinam River, 5-8 miles E., 12 January 1954, H. W. Lijding, 412 mm, ♂. Further data: length of disc (to anus) 97 mm; length of tail (from anus) 315 mm;... |

During the stay of the Nica-detachment at Port Dickson, Malaya, in March 1946, a small collection of fishes was made, which was presented by Major Dr. L. D. Brongersma to the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden. Besides these fishes from Malaya, two specimens of flying fishes from the Indian Ocean were presented. The collection from Port Dickson was pretty small, 45 specimens in total, belonging to 25 species. It gives therefore by no means an idea of the fishfauna of Malaya. The fishfauna of the Westcoast of Malaya is still imperfectly known, so even this small collection can contribute to the knowledge of this fauna. The species are arranged according to the system followed by M. Weber & L. F. de Beaufort in their Fishes of the... |

During his paleontological searches in Java, the late Prof. Eug. Dubois collected a number of fossil fish remains. His searches were instituted mainly in pleistocene deposits, and as far as I am aware these fish remains were the first of their kind to be collected in Java in strata of that age. This, and the fact that Dubois (1907, 1908) referred to these fish in two preliminary papers, gives this collection additional interest. In the first of his preliminary papers, Dubois (1907, p. 455) mentions the following fish: Anabas microcephalus, Clarias magur, Ophiocephalus, Carcharias gangeticus. In the second paper, Dubois (1908, p. 1239) mentions that at least seven species of freshwater fish are represented in his collection, viz., Anabas microcephalus,... |
