Food Processors’ Use of Contracts to Purchase Agricultural Inputs: Evidence from a Pennsylvania Survey AgEcon
Jaenicke, Edward C.; Shields, Martin; Kelsey, Timothy W..
Using data from a survey of Pennsylvania food processors, we investigate what firm-level characteristics make a processor more or less likely to buy agricultural inputs and ingredients though contracts. We find that over 20 percent of Pennsylvania processors use contracts, and over 44 percent of agricultural inputs (based on value) are purchased under contract. We also analyze the two related questions of what firm attributes, attitudes, or other factors make a firm more likely to use contracts at all, and what factors lead a processor who does contract to use them more intensively.

Examining Share Lease Arrangements for Grain Operations in the Texas Panhandle under Changing Market Conditions AgEcon
Gueck, Nicole; Jones, DeDe; Yates, Jay; Klose, Steven L..
This paper examines the profit maximizing share arrangement for both landlords and tenants producing grain in the Texas High Plains (based on risk preference), and determines whether the results are affected by input costs and market prices. Results of the analyses show that tenants and landlords prefer different arrangements in all scenarios. Results also indicate that a tenant would prefer a different lease arrangement in 2008 than in 2005, while the landlord’s preference would remain unchanged.

INVESTMENT, CREDIT CONSTRAINTS AND PUBLIC POLICY IN A NEOCLASSICAL ADJUSTMENT COST FRAMEWORK AgEcon
Cechura, Lukas.
This paper deals with the analysis of the impact of credit rationing on the farmer’s economic equilibrium and the analysis of different policy scenarios in a derived neoclassical adjustment cost framework. The theoretical model is an optimal dynamic investment model, in which the upper bound on investment is introduced. The limit of the investment enables to analyse the consequence of the occurrence of credit rationing on farmer’s capital accumulation, investment and supply. The method of optimal control is used to solve the optimization problem. The results show that the occurrence of credit rationing may significantly determine a farmer’s economic equilibrium. Then the analysis of defined policy scenarios suggests that a loan guarantee efficiently solves...

2008 Michigan Swine Business Analysis Summary AgEcon
Wittenberg, Eric; Harsh, Stephen B..
This report summarizes the financial and production records of 11 Michigan swine farms. To be included, the farms must have produced at least 50 percent of gross cash farm income from one or a combination of fat hogs, feeder pigs and cull breeding hogs sales. The records came from Michigan State University’s TelFarm project and the Farm Credit Service system in Michigan. The values were pooled into averages for reporting purposes. Farm records were included if a farm financial summary was completed on 2008 data including beginning and ending balance sheets, plus income and expenses. The data were checked to verify that cash discrepancy was less than 10% of gross cash inflow and that debt discrepancy was less than $1,000. While considerable variation in the...

FINANCIAL ANALYSIS OF TRACTOR PURCHASE DECISION IN SOUTH SULAWESI, INDONESIA: A COMPUTER SPREADSHEET TEMPLATE AgEcon
Maamun, Muhamad Yusuf.
Although most of the rice area in Indonesia is still prepared manually, since the early 1980s the government has promoted tractors for land preparation through subsidized loans. This has increased capital investment in agriculture; and for the farmers, the cost of owning and operating tractor has become an important part of farm costs. By the late 1980s, a rapid increase in the number of tractors intensified competition, reducing capacity utilization below an economically viable level. Thus, many tractor owners defaulted on their loans. This study investigates the financial profitability of tractor ownership in South Sulawesi, using a computer spreadsheet. The analysis uses input and output data (technical coefficient) collected by the Consequences of...

Prediction of Loan Deficiency Payments AgEcon
Cooper, Joseph C.; Plato, Gerald E..
This paper develops a stochastic model for estimating potential loan deficiency payments to U.S. corn producers in a discrete-dynamic context. We minimize the potential for misspecification bias by using nonparametric and semi-nonparametric approaches as specification checks in the model. The model permits the forecast at planting time of the resulting empirical distribution of LDP payments for that crop year. Using this model, the paper examines the sensitivity of this distribution to changes in expected price levels.

APPLICATION OF RECURSIVE PARTITIONING TO AGRICULTURAL CREDIT SCORING AgEcon
Novak, Michael P.; LaDue, Eddy L..
Recursive Partitioning Algorithm (RPA) is introduced as a technique for credit scoring analysis, which allows direct incorporation of misclassification costs. This study corroborates nonagricultural credit studies, which indicate that RPA outperforms logistic regression based on within-sample observations. However, validation based on more appropriate out-of-sample observations indicates that logistic regression is superior under some conditions. Incorporation of misclassification costs can influence the creditworthiness decision.

ENHANCING THE FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF SMALL MEAT PROCESSORS AgEcon
Siebert, John W.; Nayga, Rodolfo M., Jr.; Thelen, Gina C.; Kuker, Don.
The small firms examined produce meats in the State of Texas and emphasize such products as sausage, jerky, brisket, and fresh meats. The authors test hypotheses with the intent to identify operational factors associated with firm financial success. A quartile model and an econometric model are both used for this purpose. Results generally suggest important factors for firms to be profitable include product selection, pricing strategies, special equipment, and location.
