Bee fauna and associated flora from a grassland site in Brazil, surveyed 40 and 20 years ago, were newly surveyed with comparable methodology to evaluate changes in the bee fauna of this site, considering that human population and urbanization has exponentially increased in the last 40 years. In general, bee species richness has declined in 22%, as well as their abundance. Some of the previously abundant species are now absent, including Bombus bellicosus Smith, 1879, Gaesischia fulgurans (Holmberg, 1903) and Thectochlora basiatra (Strand, 1910). No particular trend of differential decrease among either taxonomic or functional groups was observed, except for a minor increase in the proportion of oligolectic species and a 50% reduction in the number of... |

Parasarus Ruz, 1993 comprises small black bees (3-5 mm long) endemic to xeric regions of South America, mainly along of the Andean Cordillera. Prior to this study, the genus included only the type-species P. atacamensis Ruz, 1993 (from northern Chile) which has mesoscutum strongly reticulated and inner hind tibial spur curved apically. In this paper, a taxonomic revision of Parasarus is presented and two new species are described: P. specularis sp. nov. (from central to northwest Argentina) diagnosed mainly by pygidial plate of female extremely acute apically and labral plate yellow in male; and P. spiniventris sp. nov. (only recorded from central portion of Chile) diagnosed by antennal socket below middle of face, subantennal area as long as broad,... |

For the first time, confirmed host records are reported for the monotypic Ericrocidini genus Aglaomelissa Snelling & Brooks, 1985. Aglaomelissa duckei (Friese, 1906) emerged from trap-nests of Centris (Heterocentris) analis (Fabricius, 1804) and C. (Heterocentris) terminata Smith, 1874 from two sites in the Brazilian Amazonian region. The parasitism ratio caused by A. duckei was high, varying from 80 to 100% of the brood cells in a single trap-nest. Also, a compilation of the known host records for the species of Ericrocidini is presented and host-parasite associations are discussed. Host associations are known for seven of the 11 genera and about 17 of the 42 species of the tribe, involving a total of 34 confirmed or putative host species of... |

Grafanthidium. gen.n. is proposed for three new species from northern Brazil, Grafanthidium amazonense, sp.n. from BR 174 km 70 (near Manaus), Amazonas; Grafanthidium rondonicola, sp.n. from Vilhena, Rondônia, and Grafanthidium paraense, sp.n. from Jacareacanga, Pará. The sixth and seventh terga of the males of these new species are characterized by the large carinate lateral lobes, the seventh with the lobes on the apex. Duckeanthidium cibele, sp.n. from Vilhena. Rondônia is described. |

The following species of Friese's Tetrapedia are removed from this genus to Paratetrapedia pallidipennis (Friese, 1899), Paratetrapedia flaviventris (Friese, 1899). Xanthopedia iheringii (Friese, 1899) and Lissopedia globulosa (Friese, 1899). When necessary lectotypes are proposed and redescriptions provided. Paratetrapedia (Xanthopedia) tricolor Michener & Moure, 1957, is considered a synonym of Xanthopedia iheringii, and Arhysoceble melampoda Moure, 1948, of Arhysoceble picta (Friese, 1899). These specimens belong to the Zoologisches Museum der Humboldt Universität, Berlin. |

Panurgillus, a generic name used by J.S. Moure throughout various years in litt. as a substitue of Panurginus in the Neotropical Apifauna, is formally described. All specimens of the species here described were collected during surveys of bees and melittophilous plants in th state of Rio Grande do Sul, southem Brazil. Various species of Panurgillus also occur in other states of southem Brazil, in Argentina and probably in Uruguay, Paraguay and Eastem Bolivia. The bees are small (3,9-7,4 mm), black, with generally a few yellow paintings, two submarginal cells, the lst m-cu distant to the base of the second submarginal cell, the clypeus not projected, the facial foveae distinct, scopa with simple, long hairs and the gonobase absent. Panurginus vagabundus... |

The outcome of a wild bee fauna survey in a secondary forest is reported. Sampling was carried out mainly on herbaceous and shrubby vegetation under and at the border of the forest. Results are compared with data collected with the same methodology from a previously surveyed grassland nearby. The secondary forest was richer in Anthophoridae and Apidae species, and less diverse in Megachilidae. Similarity between the two habitats was low. Several unidentified species of Ceratinula, Trichocerapis mirabilis and the stingless bees Melipona bicolor, M. quadrifasciata, M. marginata, Paratrigona subnuda, Scaptotrigona tubiba and S. xanthotricha, are among the species dependent on the forest environment to survive. Bee population densities in the forest understory... |

Nests of orchid bee Euplusia violacea (Blanchard, 1840) colleted in trap-nests and in the wood of a construction in Viçosa, Minas Gerais (20º45'30"S, 42º52'05"W), Brazil, were studied under laboratory condictions. Some aspects of the biology of these bees were observed, such as sex-ratio, development time, Iongevity and others. Some aspects of the behavior of E. violada were also studied. |

Populations of Ludwigia elegans (Carnb.) Hara were examined in Aluminio (600m) and Campos do Jordão (1520m), in the State of São Paulo. Flowers of both populations are self-incompatible and dependent on bees for pollination. Flowers of Ludwigia elegans at the Aluminio site were visited by about 30 different species of bees, and those at Campos do Jordão by 10. These results can be related to climatic differences at the two sites, especially temperature, due to their difference in altitude. Inspite of the difference in the absolute number of bee species seen at each site, Tetraglossula anthracina (Michener, 1989) (Colletidae) can be considered a specialized and efficient pollinator in both areas, since it visited these flowers frequently and showed many... |

The bees described as Panurginus Nylander, 1848, from southern South America and deposited in the Museum Humboldt, Berlin, were studied. Seven species were redescribed and trans-ferred to the genus Panurgillus Schlindwein & Moure, 1998: P. aeneiventris (Friese, 1908),P. brunneicornis (Strand, 1910), P.paraguayanus (Strand, 1910), P. pauloensis (Friese, 1916), P. saltensis (Friese, 1908), P. solani (Ducke, 1912) e P. steinbachi (Friese, 1916). A key for the identification of the 21 known species of the genus is included. Panurginus flaviceps Friese, 1916 and P. saltensis var. nigroclypeata Friese, 1908 described by Friese are synonyms of Anthrenoides meridionalis (Schrottky, 1906). Panurginus laticeps Friese, 1916 belongs to Cephalurgus Moure... |

Recently I have seen some bees from the State of Bahia, and because they are relatively rare the opportunity is taken to complete the short description of Oxaea rufa Friese, 1898, and register the new locality for this species and for Oxaea schwarzi Moure & Seabra, 1962. Euglossa (Euglossella) cyanochlora. the largest known Euglossa Latreille, 1802 (length 19,5mm), a visitor of flowers of Solanaceae, is described as new. It is from Itamarajú. on the Southernmost part of Bahia. Euglossa (Euglossa) perfulgens Moure, 1967, belongs in the subgenus Euglossella Moure, 1967. |
