Genetic improvement of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) ArchiMer
Vandeputte, Marc.
Common carp was the first domesticated fish species and is now a major species in worldwide aquaculture. Although research has generated a considerable body of knowledge about its genetics, genetic improvement programmes are virtually non-existent in this species and only crossbreeding is used in practice. The main reasons are the inefficiency of methods usually effective in other aquaculture species (monosexing, triploidy), and the bad image of selective breeding which is difficult to implement in ponds, and for which reliable genetic parameters were missing until recently. These parameters are now becoming available through the use of parentage assignment with microsatellite markers. However, the question of selective breeding for growth remains far from...

Informing Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) with numerical modelling: A case-study on shellfish aquaculture in Malpeque Bay (Eastern Canada) ArchiMer
Filgueira, Ramon; Guyondet, Thomas; Bacher, Cedric; Comeau, Luc A..
A moratorium on further bivalve leasing was established in 1999–2000 in Prince Edward Island (Canada). Recently, a marine spatial planning process was initiated explore potential mussel culture expansion in Malpeque Bay. This study focuses on the effects of a projected expansion scenario on productivity of existing leases and available suspended food resources. The aim is to provide a robust scientific assessment using available datasets and three modelling approaches ranging in complexity: (1) a connectivity analysis among culture areas; (2) a scenario analysis of organic seston dynamics based on a simplified biogeochemical model; and (3) a scenario analysis of phytoplankton dynamics based on an ecosystem model. These complementary approaches suggest (1)...

Combined effects of dietary HUFA level and temperature on sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) larvae development ArchiMer
Vagner, Marie; Robin, Jean; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Person, Jeannine.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the combined effect of the incorporation of vegetable products in diet and temperature on enzymatic pathways for high unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) desaturation in sea bass larvae. Four replicated groups were fed a low (LH; 0.8% EPA+DHA) or a high (HH; 2.2% EPA+DHA) n-3 HUFA microparticulated diet from mouth opening, six days post-hatching and were reared at 16 or 22 degrees C. The four experimental conditions (LH16, HH16, LH22 and HH22) were tested for 45 days. At the end of the experiment, body weight, total length and biomass were affected by temperature (P<0.001), while biomass as well as fresh body weight was also influenced by diet (P<0.05 and P<0.001 respectively). This always lead to the same...

A combined microsatellite multiplexing and boiling DNA extraction method for high-throughput parentage analyses in the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) ArchiMer
Taris, Nicolas; Baron, S; Sharbel, Tim; Sauvage, Christopher; Boudry, Pierre.
The analysis of parentage using microsatellite markers is of increasing importance, notably in aquaculture genetic research where communal rearing of mixed families can be used to reduce unwanted environmental variance. We present here an optimization of parental genotype assessment for larvae or adults of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, using a multiplex system of three microsatellite loci. In conjunction with a simple DNA extraction protocol, this method enables high throughput analyses of parentage in C. gigas. Using this method, we successfully determined the parentage of 93% (1224 out of 1318) of the progeny in a factorial cross between 3 females and 10 males. The inability to genotype the remaining 7% was due to DNA degradation of larvae...

In vitro study on sperm competition in common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) ArchiMer
Kaspar, Vojtech; Hulak, Martin; Kohlmann, Klaus; Vandeputte, Marc; Rodina, Marek; Gela, David; Linhart, Otomar.
Sperm competition occurs when sperm from different males compete for fertilization. The aim of this in vitro fertilization study was to compare the competitive success of five males using heterosperm with an equal number of sperm from each male and four different sperm/egg ratios (5,000, 10,000, 20,000 and 100,000 spermatozoa per egg) in order to better understand variations of competitive fertilization. The roles of sperm motility and velocity were studied. Fertilization and hatching rates of the 5 males studied, with 100,000 spermatozoa per egg, were between 23.7-94.8% and 23.7-92.2%, respectively. Sperm velocity and percentage of motile sperm ranged from 85.0 to 137.6 mu m s(-1) and 2.0 to 93.5% at 15 see post sperm activation, respectively. The...

Utilisation des chaînes alimentaires naturelles et du recyclage des eaux usées dans la production à grande échelle de juvéniles pour l'aquaculture ArchiMer
Barbabé, G..
The production of Juveniles, key of aquaculture, needs for the alimentation of the larvae, to dispose plankton preys, which cannot be supplied by rearing. The collections realised with adapted implements, have led to very positive results In both types of media, situated in the surroundings of Séte : mar shes and oxydation ponds (used for waste water purifying). The most abundant plankton in these two kinds of media are uni-cellular algae, Rotlfera, Copepoda, Daphne (oxydation pont) and Aetemia (marshes). These populations constitute a complete alimentation sequence without an equivalent for the necessities of larvae and juveniles. Our qualitative collections (from 0,2 to 20 kg/h) plankton, dependent on the species) have allowed to rear, without any...

Little work dealing with the evaluation of aquaculture system sustainability has so far been undertaken on a global and comparative basis. Moreover, such work is mostly based on very unbalanced approaches in terms of the dimensions of sustainable development that are taken into account. The approach adopted in this article is designed to encompass all the dimensions of sustainability including the institutional one (governance). The taking into account of this latter, in particular, together with the role played by aquaculture in sustainability at the territorial level gives the approach its original and innovative nature. The process of establishing the checklist of sustainability indicators in aquaculture relies on a hierarchical nesting approach which...

Projet d'elevage du loup en mer : etude technico-economique du pregrossissement et du grossissement ArchiMer
Tanguy, Renan; Le Grel, Laurent.
After 12 years of a difficult start, the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) breeding projects are multiplying. Faced with the constraints presented by the sites used in the past, farming at sea seems to offer conditions more conducive to the growth and survival of the animals. The zootechnical data from the farm makes it possible to link the rate of growth and the thermal profile of the site. Risks and uncertainties still weigh heavily on aquafarming projects, but solutions such as insurance are helping to improve their economic feasibility. The economic and financial analysis comes up with good overall profitability of the project, even if the duration of the breeding cycle and the necessity to ensure a progressive increase in operating capacity make the...

Innovations in pregrowing and growing techniques of bivalves ArchiMer
Flassch, Jean-pierre.
Featuring innovation could be simpleness in the field application, allowing to account in the best of natural conditions. The new technologies increasing production are usually subordinate to climatic, geogaphic and mainly socio-economic conditions wre they are used, therefore they cannot be always directly tranferred to other countries. Another fact could be pointed out : in high productivity areas the innovations are quite unusual ; the influrence of farmers and the routine practices generally restrict the propagation of new ideas and their application ; on the other hand in the new countries or with a starting prodcution the new techniques get the best chances to be transferred. These last fifteen y the use of synthetic stuff has been one of the...

Measuring cultured fish swimming behaviour: first results on rainbow trout using acoustic telemetry in tanks ArchiMer
Begout, Marie-laure; Lagardere, Jean-paul.
An experiment was conducted to measure swimming activity of rainbow trout (254.0 +/- 33.7 g) held in outdoor tanks under three culture conditions with stocking density used to generate differences: 27 (Culture Density 1, CD1), 80 (CD2) and 136 kg m(-3) (CD3). Fish were fed dry pellets at 1% of tank biomass from 9h00 to 13h00 with automatic feeders. Using acoustic telemetry, fish positions were monitored every 5 s during 48 h for nine fish (three in each treatment). Swimming behaviour was analysed in terms of trajectories: they varied between (i) holding position (high turning angles), (ii) chaotic trajectories (equal use of all turning angles) and (iii) circular swimming (average turning angle of 60degrees). Space utilisation differed for each culture...

Le concept de biosécurité en pisciculture marine : prévention de l'encéphalite virale chez l'ombrine subtropicale (Sciaenops ocellatus) en Martinique ArchiMer
Adee, Fabrice.
In 1985, red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) was introduced in Martinique in arder to replace sea bass fish farming. Nodavirus antibodies were detected in the broodstock at the IFREMER station in Robert. Nodavirus is responsible for viral nervous necrosis, a disease that is spreading quickly in worlwide marine aquaculture. A biosecurity process was initiated at the Robert hatchery to select seronegative breeders and produce nodavirus free larvae. This process, based on a serological follow-up of fish antibodies by ELISA, allowed a reduction of the number of seropositive fish. A complementary serological study revealed a low incidence of nodavirus contamination in nodavirus free larvae placed in sea cages on different production sites

L'élevage du Loup tropical (Lates calcarifer, Bloch) en Polynésie Française. Approche technico-économique ArchiMer
Pierson, R; Thouard, Emmanuel; Nedelec, Georges.
Due to lack of knowledge about the seabass (Lates calcarifer) market in Polynesia, various production levels were considered to develop a managing tool for decision, making relevant development strategy and adapted rearing technology. This work is an analysis of the economical parameters of known rearing techniques depending on various production levels. The comparative study of the techniques, phase by phase, regarding the production cost and the investments prompted us to select the semi-intensive larval rearing technology under the current economical conditions. However, the larval rearing extensive technique could be of highest interest for productions lower than 60 metric tons a year. Growing-out in floating net-cages appeared to be the only...

Analyse des résultats d'une ferme d'élevage de crevettes sur 20 années : SODACAL 1984-2004. "Elasticité" de la capacité de production d'un écosystème bassin crevetticole ArchiMer
Della Patrona, Luc.
SODACAL prawn farm which was set up as a pilot farm for the development of a prawn industry in New Caledonia, saw its production exponentially rise from 1984 to 1992 (to 400 t/year, then experienced a sharp drop in 1993 (250 t/year) which carried on until 1997, and finally rose back to a stabilizing level around 400 t/year until 1999. The study analyses the difficulties observed before and during the drop of production. Among them, mortality outbreaks, other biological perturbations (benthic mat clearing and crab and fish mortality) and focus on the noxious state of the bottom (reduced and smelling sulfide hydrogen). It particularly shows that Syndrome 93 outbreaks could be observed on this farm from 1990. The analysis highlights the particular climatic...

Marine crustacean farming: present status and perspectives ArchiMer
Laubier, Annie; Laubier, Lucien.
For centuries, several species of prawns and crabs have been raised from wild-caught juveniles in coastal brackish-water fish ponds in various countries of south east Asia. The Indonesian "tambaks" are well known examples of such traditional practices. In western countries, since the turn of the century, advances of marine biology and fast increase of marine fisheries enabled the development of large-scale production and release of larval stages of American and European lobsters in a fruitless attempt to restock natural populations. After the Second World War, the increasing demand for crustaceans in United States and Japan was satisfied by opening new prawn fisheries all over the world. A major breakthrough was achieved with the development of hatchery...

Variabilité et bioénergétique de la reproduction chez l'huître creuse Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Enriquez Diaz, Marta Rosalia.
The variability in reproductive cycle of Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, was evaluated in situ (Bay of Veys, BOV and Marennes-Oléron bay, MOB) and in hatchery culture conditions. Two trophic levels were tested over one year: high food level (HFL) and low food level (LFL). We observed that the phytoplanktonic concentration (chlorophyll a) was the principal factor that influenced gametogenesis intensity and duration. The oysters reared within a high trophic ration (BOV and HFL) shown a hyper-gonad development. However, the spawning efficiency was reduced and partial. Therefore, the resorption period was prolonged until winter. Meanwhile, the oysters reared in a low trophic ration (MOB and LFL) produced a normal gonad with a total spawning in summer and...

Individual growth variation and its relationship with survival in juvenile Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) ArchiMer
Boudry, Pierre; Collet, B; Mccombie, Helen; Ernande, Bruno; Morand, B; Heurtebise, Serge; Gerard, Andre.
In order to study individual growth variability and its relationship with survival in juvenile Crassostrea gigas, parental oysters were sampled at four sites located along the French Atlantic coast and bred under controlled hatchery conditions. Four groups of larvae were obtained by crossing five males and five females from each of the four sites, and a fifth group by crossing these 20 males and 20 females together in a pool. Larvae were reared under conditions allowing the maintenance of a maximum variability of size and gave five experimental groups. Oysters were individually monitored for growth and survival from 3 to 10 months after fertilization. The individual growth performances were relatively stable over time and no noticeable compensation for...

Introduction: This document is the End of Second Year internship report for Rennes University 1's Senior Math and Computer Science Modelisation Professional diploma. This two month internship was completed at the Brest IFREMER center at the Coastal Ecology department. IFREMER participates, in the course of its institutional missions, in observation and coastal sea surveillance, in order to improve on the knowledge, protection methods and restoration of the marine environment. Marine phytoplankton proliferation is an important study subject because of its potential cause for nuisance, for men, consumers of sea products as well as for the ecosystem. During Spring and Summer, shellfish become invariably unsuitable for consumption due to toxins produced by...
