Impact assessment of irrigation management transfer in the Alto Rio Lerma Irrigation District, Mexico AgEcon
Kloezen, Wim H.; Garces-Restrepo, Carlos; Johnson, Sam H., III.
Tests the hypothesis that, in general, irrigation management transfer has positive impacts on operation performance, managerial accountability, O&M budgeting and expenditures, costs of water to farmers, and agricultural and economic productivity in the Alto Rio Lerma Irrigation District in Mexico. Evaluates the potential of the Mexican IMT process as a model for other countries.

A Framework for Evaluating Return on Investment in Management Development Programs AgEcon
Lynch, Kara; Akridge, Jay T.; Schaffer, Scott P.; Gray, Allan W..
Return on Investment (ROI) is a financial metric that can be used to evaluate training and development investments. The objective of this research is to develop an evaluation process using ROI to assess the financial performance of management development programs. A three-phase model for ROI evaluation is presented. These phases include assessment planning, data collection, and data analysis. This model is then tested and applied to a management development program. This paper provides a template for ROI evaluation that can be used to evaluate a wide variety of training and development activities by food and agribusiness firms.

What Can the Poor Expect From Trade Liberalization? Opening the "Black Box" of Trade Modeling AgEcon
Bouet, Antoine.
Trade liberalization is expected to act positively on development and poverty alleviation, both of which have become a high priority of international community. This explains why numerous studies have focused on assessing the expected benefits of trade liberalization on poverty. The main empirical tool for these assessments has been the use of multi-country Computable General Equilibrium Models (CGEM). These models, however, have produced divergent results. As demonstrated by recent studies, the associated increase in world welfare from full trade liberalization ranges from 0.2% to 3.1% — results that differ by a factor of 15 to 1! The impact on poverty headcount is also very divergent as the number of people lifted out from poverty ranges from 72 million...

Application of Electronic Data Collection in Research of Socio-Economic Importance of Forest Functions AgEcon
Pospisilova, Vendula; Pospisil, Josef; Hucko, Jan.
The main topic of the project is the application of electronic data collection using the web interface to the research of the socio-economic importance of forest functions. A unique system for data collection, the provision of evidence and processing was designed. The system leads to the simplification of the research, to the possibility of extending the investigation in the field and to the survey of forest visit trends in the long term. The approach will enable the formation of an extended database. The paper describes the steps of the project’s implementation. The e-survey started at the end of September 2010 continues to this time.

Assessment of Broiler Chicken Welfare in Southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Federici,JF; Vanderhasselt,R; Sans,ECO; Tuyttens,FAM; Souza,APO; Molento,CFM.
Abstract Scientific literature on broiler chicken welfare in Brazilian industrial systems is scarce. This study aimed at assessing broiler chicken welfare on industrial farms in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil, using the Welfare Quality(r) assessment protocol for poultry, to provide directly applicable scientific information. Results are presented as criteria scores ranging from 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating better welfare; and percentages of prevalence. The scores classified as excellent (above 80) were absence of prolonged thirst, absence of prolonged hunger, litter quality, breast blister and touch test. Enhanced scores (between 55 and 80) were comfort around resting, plumage cleanliness and dust sheet test. Acceptable scores...

Bait traps remain attractive to euglossine bees even after two weeks: a report from Brazilian Atlantic forest Rev. Bras. entomol.
Coswosk,Judson Albino; Soares,Elaine Della Giustina; Faria,Luiz R.R..
ABSTRACT Bait traps are effective and commonly used method in the studies of orchid bees. Important questions in the context of this method, including those related to bait dispersion, how long baits remain attractive, the distance from which males are supposed to be attracted to lures and so on, are still open subjects. Data on the attractiveness of bait traps that have remained in the field during two weeks in a large Atlantic forest preserve are presented. Four main results emerge from the data: (i) the abundance of specimens collected per day decreased in all the attractants as the traps were left on the field; (ii) despite this decrease, the absolute number of individuals collected after eight and fifteen days is remarkably, mostly in eugenol and...

HARVEST LABOR QUALITY AND PRODUCTIVITY:CASE STUDY OF CHERRY GROWING IN CHILE Rev. Bras. Frutic.
JARA-ROJAS,ROBERTO; GUERRA,ANTONIO; ADASME-BERRIOS,CRISTIÁN; ENGLER,ALEJANDRA; VALDÉS,RODRIGO.
In Chile, the cherry tree has been one of the fastest growing and most profitable crops in the last ten years. However, increasing production costs, the scarcity of hired labor, and unfavorable exchange rates have reduced the productivity and competitiveness of the Chilean fruit sector. The aim of this article is to evaluate the harvest labor quality in cherry growing in Chile through the use of productivity indicators. A harvest labor evaluation system (HLES) was designed and four indicators were measured: Average Weight of Harvested Box, Average Daily Production per Worker, Percent of Export Fruit, and Percent of Fruit Discarded. Significant differences werefound between the 2010/11 season (with the HLES implementation) and the previous seasons without...

Assessment of the impact of preventive maintenance strategy on reliability indicators of a rice combine harvester in the Gambia. CIGR Journal
minteh, mustapha.
Abstract: Maintenance cost of agricultural machines accounts for about 10 to 15% of total production cost and this tends to increase as the machine gets older. To stabilized this already high cost, agricultural machinery maintenance engineers chose Preventive Maintenance (PM) strategy. However, the latter may not produce the desired results especially when machines are used under different operating context. In this paper, an assessment of the effects of PM strategy on reliability indicators (failure rate, mean time between failures (MTBF), mean time to repair (MTTR) and mechanical availability) of a rice combine harvester Mitsubishi TVR96 working under the operating context of Pacharr rice fields in The Gambia, is discussed. These reliability indicators...

Assessment of the suitability of land use for agriculture by analytical hierarchy process : AHP in lower Prachinburi watershed, eastern Thailand CIGR Journal
Rukanee, Duangthip; Sangchan, Songvoot; Choomjaihan, Prasan.
The low Prachinburi watershed is a gateway to other regions of the country.  Due to a rapid increase in population there, there is also an increase in agricultural production area.  This study aims to assess the appropriateness of land use by using analytical hierarchy process (AHP) for land use planning.            Results of the study revealed that there is a moderate level of the appropriateness in land use development.  The most appropriate area (S1) accounts for 22.07 percent; the moderately appropriate area (S2) accounts for 54.15 percent; the lowly appropriate area (S3) accounts for 10.25 percent; and the inappropriate area accounts 13.52 percent of the area.  Regarding a guideline for agricultural area management, it is found to be mostly...

Terrestrial impact structures as geoheritage: an assessment method of their scientific value and its application to Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
SÁNCHEZ,JOANA P.; BRILHA,JOSÉ B.R..
ABSTRACT Terrestrial impact structures are geological and geomorphological features with particular importance to understand the history and evolution of the planet. Impact structures are scattered around the world but in many countries these features are under threat, essentially due to anthropic factors. Impact structures with higher scientific value should be considered as geological heritage and, consequently, be subjected to geoconservation strategies. In order to select the most important impact structures to be properly conserved and managed, this paper proposes a quantitative assessment method of the scientific value of these structures. The eight Brazilian impact structures were used to test this method that has the potential to be applied to any...
