Última Prolegomenon to further studies in the Chrysococcyx 'Malayanus' group (Aves, Cucilidae) Naturalis Parker, S.A.. In its present state, the corpus of knowledge constituting our understanding of the Chrysococcyx 'malayanus' group is too unorganized to be used directly as the foundation for a modern systematic appraisal. A n attempt is here made to rectify this by overhauling the available facts. Stemming from this exercise, a few simple preliminary adjustments to the nomenclature and taxonomy of the group are suggested. The taxa here recognized are C. minutillus (with subspecies peninsularis subsp. nov., albifrons, cleis subsp. nov., minutillus and barnardi), C. russatus (subspecies aheneus, jungei, misoriensis and russatus), C. rufomerus, C. crassirostris and C. ruficollis. The use of mistnets in forest on Yamdena (Tanimbar Islands, South Moluccas, Indonesia) revealed the presence of an undescribed bush-warbler of the genus Cettia Bonaparte, 1834. The new species is described and illustrated here and its morphological characters and vocalizations are compared with those of Asian-Pacific congeners in the subgenus Horeites Hodgson, 1845. It is considered most closely related to the Southwest Pacific warblers previously known as Vitia Ramsay, 1875. In addition, the identity of Cettia bivittata Finsch, 1901, is discussed. In the study of diversity patterns, the Mid-domain effect (MDE), which explains gradients in diversity solely on the basis of geometric constraints, has emerged as a null-model against which other hypotheses can be tested. The effectiveness, measured by its predictive power, of these MDE models appears to depend on the size of the study area and the range-sizes of the taxa considered. Here we test the predictive power of MDE on the species richness patterns of birds and assess its effectiveness for a variety of species range sizes. We digitised distribution maps of 889 species of songbird endemic to the Palearctic, and analysed the emergent biogeographic patterns with WORLDMAP software. On 6 October 1764, Adriaan Vroeg sold his collection of birds, insects and a few other animals by auction. The sales catalogue was published anonymously, but contained several scientific names of birds, which have nomenclatorial standing. Only three copies of this catalogue are known. The appendix entitled “Adumbratiunculae” has previously been attributed to Peter Simon Pallas, who is quoted as author of the new names of birds. In the present note, the main text is credited to Arnout Vosmaer, on the basis of contemporary references. Where the species names proposed by Vosmaer are synonyms of those published by Pallas in the same volume, the latter are selected, because some names have been validly used before with Pallas as the author. Roselaar & Prins (2000) indicated there were two syntypes of Bombycivora japonica von Siebold, 1824; a 1st-winter female in the collection of the Zoologisch Museum Amsterdam, while the other, a male, was considered lost. However, in a letter to Temminck, von Siebold made clear that the species was described on the basis of one specimen. His description is clearly taken from a 1st-year male. Temminck (1828) described Bombicilla phoenicoptera based on the same ZMA specimen and an adult female specimen in the National Museum of Natural History in Leiden, collected by von Siebold, which arrived in Leiden in 1827.
