Because of its size and geographical position, the Cherbourg roadstead appears as a favourable site for Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) industry. As a result, Cherbourg harbour has undergone profound changes (2015 and 2016) due to the installation of industrial infrastructures to service the needs of expanding MRE further offshore. However, little is known about the morpho-sedimentary distribution and associated dynamics of seabed sediments before and after harbour transformations. This study focuses on sedimentary dynamics using detailed morphological and sedimentological analyses based on data acquired before changes (2012). The main map includes a unique bathymetric map (1:35,000) and sedimentary maps showing the percentage of the characteristic grain... |

The quality estimation associated with individual soundings measured and computed by swath bathymetry sonars is a paramount issue which is most often imperfectly addressed today by sonar manufacturers. In this paper, a unified definition is proposed for a quality factor usable for all swath bathymetry sonars; the depth-relative error is directly estimated from the signal characteristics used in the sounding computation. The basic algorithms are presented for both phase-difference (oblique incidence) and amplitude (normal incidence) detection, and can be readily implemented in any swath bathymetry system using these detection principles. This approach gives a direct access to the objective bathymetric performance of individual soundings, and hence avoids... |

The Charente Maritime coast, in central western France, is the most important area for oyster and mussel production in Europe. High density, in this restricted intertidal area, induces low growing rate and socio-economic difficulties. One of the possible solutions is to shift some oysters from intertidal area to submerged areas. Bathymetry, sedimentology, hydrodynamism, fisheries and administrative rules are some conditions which are considered to establish the better selection of potential zone. The successive steps of setting up the prototype of GIS are presented: digitized traditional data from charts, extracted data from grid models (hydrodynmaic model), merging of thematic covers, proposal of favorable areas. The results are discussed especially on... |

Subduction of a narrow slab of oceanic lithosphere beneath a tightly curved orogenic arc requires the presence of at least one lithospheric scale tear fault. While the Calabrian subduction beneath southern Italy is considered to be the type example of this geodynamic setting, the geometry, kinematics and surface expression of the associated lateral, slab tear fault offshore eastern Sicily remain controversial. Results from a new marine geophysical survey conducted in the Ionian Sea, using high-resolution bathymetry and seismic profiling reveal active faulting at the seafloor within a 140 km long, two-branched fault system near Alfeo Seamount. The previously unidentified 60 km long NW trending North Alfeo Fault system shows primarily strike-slip kinematics... |

Deep-sea ecosystems have attracted considerable commercial interest in recent years because of their potential to sustain a diverse range of mankind's industrial needs. If these systems are to be preserved or exploited in a sustainable manner, mapping habitats and species distributions is critical. As biodiversity at cold-seeps or other deep-sea ecosystems is driven by habitat heterogeneity, imagery is the obvious choice for characterizing these systems and has indeed proven extremely valuable towards mapping biogenic habitats formed by dense aggregations of large sized species, such as coral reefs, tubeworm bushes or bivalve beds. However, the acquisition of detailed images with resolution sufficient for reliable identification is extremely time... |

The detailed morphology and internal structure of the Calabrian accretionary wedge and adjacent Eastern Sicily margin are imaged in unprecedented detail by a combined dataset of multi-beam bathymetry and high-resolution seismic profiles. The bathymetric data represent the results of 6 recent marine geophysical surveys since 2010 as well as a compilation of earlier surveys presented as a 2 arc-sec (60 m) grid. Several distinct morpho-tectonic provinces are identified including: the deeply incised Malta–Hyblean Escarpment, numerous submarine canyons, broad regions of relatively flat seafloor dominated by fields of sediment waves, the gently undulating anticlinal fold-and-thrust belts of the external Calabrian accretionary wedge and the adjacent portion of... |

We calculated correlations between seafloor depth and phytoplankton blooms in all three main high-nitrate, low-chlorophyll (HNLC) regions, but with a particular focus on the subarctic North Pacific area. It has long been known that the central parts of the east and west subarctic North Pacific are HNLC regions. The deep western basin of the Bering Sea is also HNLC, whereas the wide continental shelf of the eastern Bering Sea is not. We carried out a statistical comparison of spatial maps of (1) seafloor depth and (2) chlorophyll a concentration from satellite data. This comparison reveals that shallow waters have, on average, higher peak chlorophyll a concentrations (more intense phytoplankton blooms) than deep waters (p << 0.01). Possible artifacts... |

Bathymetric multibeam echosounders (MBES) classically improve their bottom detection resolution by increasing the number of beams with narrower beamwidths. Many independent detections are thus obtained when extracting one sounding in each beam. However when the pulse footprint on the bottom gets narrower than the beamwidth, which often happens at high incidence angles, it is possible to extract several independent bottom detections within the same beam. These high-density soundings extraction methods present a still higher interest for MBES designed with rather “wide” beams (say 3° or more), so as to offer other benefits, such as compacity, low-cost, or low sidelobe levels as for fishery applications. This paper presents a simple way to derive multiple... |

The Reykjanes Ridge is a major topographic feature located south of Iceland in the North‐Atlantic Ocean that strongly influences the subpolar gyre (SPG) circulation. Based on velocity and hydrographic measurements carried out along the crest of the Reykjanes Ridge from the Icelandic continental shelf to 50°N during the RREX cruise in June – July 2015, we derived the first direct estimates of volume and water mass transports over the Reykjanes Ridge. North of 53.15°N, circulation was mainly westward; south of this latitude it was mainly eastward. The westward transport was estimated at 21.9 ± 2.5 Sv (Sv = 106 m3 s‐1) and represents the SPG intensity. The westward flows followed two main pathways at 57°N near the Bight Fracture Zone and at 59 – 62°N. We... |

Alexandria Eastern Harbor is a shallow, protected, semi-enclosed, circular basin. It is connected to the Mediterranean Sea through two openings: El-Boughaz (main) and El-Silsila. New data, from a recent bathymetric survey in the Harbor, is used to build up its bathymetric chart. The bottom of the Harbor slopes gradually seawards, with an average depth of 5m inside the Harbor. The study build up Alexandria Eastern Harbor new bathymetric chart, will be a useful tool to follow-up the problems of the harbor and to propose suitable solutions. Recommendations are set in the end of the study to activate the self recovery (by the Harbor water body) to preserve and recover the situation of Alexandria Eastern Harbor. |
