Geographic, seasonal and ontogenetic variation in cadmium and mercury concentrations in squid (Cephalopoda : Teuthoidea) from UK waters ArchiMer
Pierce, G; Stowasser, G; Hastie, L; Bustamante, Paco.
Cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) levels were measured in the tissue samples of two loliginid (Alloteuthis sp. and Loligo forbesi) and two ommastrephid (Todarodes sagittatus and Todaropsis eblanae) squid species collected from research cruise and fishery (market) samples in UK waters during 2004-05. Concentrations of Cd were generally higher in the ommastrephids, in all tissues except muscle. Hg concentrations were higher in T sagittatus than in the loliginids. In L. forbesi, metal concentrations differed between tissues and also varied in relation to body size, geographic origin, and season. Cd levels decreased with increasing body size. This may be related to a shift in the diet with growth, since small L. forbesi feed on benthic invertebrates that have...

Contrasting bioaccumulation and transport behaviour of two artificial radionuclides (Am-241 and Cs-134) in cuttlefish eggshell ArchiMer
Bustamante, Paco; Teyssie, J; Fowler, S; Warnau, M.
Radionuclide experiments were performed to study the accumulation, retention and transport of Am-241 and Cs-134 in egos of the common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis. Experiments were designed to determine the processes controlling uptake of both radionuclides following, exposure via seawater. The bioaccumulation of both radionuclides displayed saturation kinetics with steady state in uptake being reached in 10 d for Am-241 and 6 d for (CS)-C-134. Am-241 was readily taken up by the eggs which reached a concentration factor (CF) of 20 after 10 d of exposure. During embryonic development. the eggshell acted as an effective shield against Am-241 penetration with 98% of the radionuclide associated with this membrane. In contrast. (CS)-C-134 was transported across...

Fate of Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles in Natural Waters and Immunotoxicity in Exposed Rainbow Trout ArchiMer
Gagnon, C.; Bruneau, Audrey; Turcotte, P.; Pilote, M.; Gagne, F..
Once released in the environment, engineered nanoparticles (NPs) can undergo important transformation resulting in changed properties under natural conditions. This study investigated the fate, the bioavailability and the immunotoxicity of cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles in fish exposed to CeO2 in representative surface waters differing in pH, organic matter content and conductivity (green and brown waters). Following an incubation period of NP CeO2 in different surface waters, particle size distribution and shape were determined by ultrafiltration and ICP-mass spectrometry, electronic microscopy and dynamic light scattering (DSL). Bioaccumulation and effect biomarkers focusing on the immune system responses (viability of immune cells and phagocytic...

Cadmium pathways in an exploited intertidal ecosystem with chronic cadmium inputs (Marennes-Oleron, Atlantic coast, France) ArchiMer
Pigeot, J; Miramand, P; Guyot, T; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Fichet, D; Le Moine, Olivier; Huet, V.
The Marennes-Oleron Bay is subject to chronic pollution by cadmium (Cd) from the Gironde watershed. An ecosystem approach was used to study the fate of cadmium in the different biological compartments. The median Cd concentration was 0.4 mu g g(-1) dry weight for the 63 benthic species measured. When combined with the respective biomasses for the different species studied, we estimated that 7 kg of Cd is partitioned into the soft tissues of the benthic species in the bay. The majority of this cadmium was distributed between primary producers, mainly microphytobenthos (40 %), and suspension-feeders, mainly oysters (40 %). All other benthic species measured were associated with negligible masses of Cd. Two trophic levels contained 98 % of the Cd: 3 kg was...

L'élevage conchylicole sur filière : revue bibliographique ArchiMer
Robert, Stephane; Prou, Jean; Le Moine, Olivier; Taillade, Sylvie.

Trace element contamination in fish impacted by bauxite red mud disposal in the Cassidaigne canyon (NW French Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Bouchoucha, Marc; Chekri, R.; Leufroy, A.; Jitaru, P.; Millour, S.; Marchond, N.; Chafey, C.; Testu, C.; Zinck, J.; Cresson, Pierre; Mirallès, F.; Mahe, A.; Arnich, N.; Sanaa, M.; Bemrah, N.; Guérin, T.
From 1966 to 2015, the Gardanne alumina refinery discharged some 20 million tons of bauxite residue (called red mud) into the Cassidaigne Canyon (northwest French Mediterranean) with impacts on local ecosystem functioning. Although these red muds contained high levels of trace elements (TE), in particular titanium (Ti), vanadium (V), aluminum (Al) and arsenic (As), surprisingly, their impacts on fish contamination levels and the risk related to fish consumption have been little studied until now. Here, 11 trace elements (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, Ti and V) were analyzed in muscle and, when possible, liver, from 1308 fish of 26 species from an impacted zone in the vicinity of the Cassidaigne Canyon and a reference zone, unaffected by red mud...

PCB concentrations in plankton size classes, a temporal study in Marseille Bay, Western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Tiano, Marion; Tronczynski, Jacek; Harmelin-vivien, Mireille; Tixier, Celine; Carlotti, Francois.
PCB levels in plankton were investigated in the Bay of Marseille, Western Mediterranean Sea, between September 2010 and October 2011. Concentrations of PCB congeners (CB 18, CB 52, CB 101, CB 118, CB 138, CB 153, CB 180) were determined in three plankton size-classes (60–200, 200–500 and 500–1000 μm) together with different parameters: chlorophyll content, plankton dry-weight biomass, carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios and plankton-community structure. The ∑PCB7 concentrations ranged between 14.2 and 88.1 ng g−1 d.w., for all size classes and all sampling periods. The results do not show the biomass dilution effect and indicate moderate but significant biomagnification with plankton trophic position estimated by δ15N signatures. Equilibrium with...

Experimental evidence of dietary ciguatoxin accumulation in an herbivorous coral reef fish ArchiMer
Clausing, Rachel J.; Losen, Barbara; Oberhaensli, Francois R.; Darius, H. Taiana; Sibat, Manoella; Hess, Philipp; Swarzenski, Peter W.; Chinain, Mireille; Bottein, Marie-yasmine Dechraoui.
Ciguatoxins (CTXs) are potent algal toxins that cause widespread ciguatera poisoning and are found ubiquitously in coral reef food webs. Here we developed an environmentally-relevant, experimental model of CTX trophic transfer involving dietary exposure of herbivorous fish to the CTX-producing microalgae Gambierdiscus polynesiensis. Juvenile Naso brevirostris were fed a gel-food embedded with microalgae for 16 weeks (89 cells g.1 fish daily, 0.4 ¦Ìg CTX3C equiv kg.1 fish). CTXs in muscle tissue were detectable after 2 weeks at levels above the threshold for human intoxication (1.2 ¡À 0.2 ¦Ìg CTX3C equiv kg.1). Although tissue CTX concentrations stabilized after 8 weeks (¡«3 ¡À 0.5 ¦Ìg CTX3C equiv kg.1), muscle toxin burden (total ¦Ìg CTX in muscle tissue)...

Dietary exposure of juvenile common sole (Solea solea L.) to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs): Part 1. Bioaccumulation and elimination kinetics of individual congeners and their debrominated metabolites ArchiMer
Munschy, Catherine; Moisan, Karine; Tixier, Celine; Olivier, Nathalie; Gastineau, Olivier; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Buchet, Vincent.
The uptake and elimination of six PBDE congeners (BDE-28, -47, -99, -100, -153, -209) were studied in juvenile common sole (Solea solea L) exposed to spiked contaminated food over a three-month period, then depurated over a five-month period. The results show that all of the studied PBDEs accumulate in fish tissues, including the higher brominated congener BDE-209. Several additional PBDE congeners were identified in the tissues of exposed fish, revealing PBDE transformation, mainly via debromination. The identified congeners originating from PBDE debromination include BDE-49 and BDE-202 and a series of unidentified tetra-, penta-, and hepta- BDEs. Contaminant assimilation efficiencies (AEs) were related to their hydrophobicity (log K-ow) and influenced by...

Bado Nilles, Anne.
The effects of PAHs, considered among the most toxic by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, were tested in vitro and in vivo on two commercial species of the Pertuis-Charentais (Charente-Maritime, France): sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, and the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas. This study was carried out as part of the European project EROCIPS with the aim of finding new immunological biomarkers caused by occasional pollution by hydrocarbons. During in vitro experimentation, pollutants and immunological biomarkers were choosen. Thereafter, the in vitro exposures to the soluble fraction of Erika's heavy fuel oil and its fluxant, light cycle oil, began. These exposures enable the validation of the experimental system used, with, in...

Bodin, Nathalie.
Marine decapod crustaceans are macrobenthic opportunist species, of great commercial interest, and can accumulate pollutants. Worrying about consumers' safety, polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), polybromodiphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) and dioxins (PCDD/Fs) were analyzed in four crustacean species from the coastal waters of Brittany and Normandy. As regards to regulations, the consumption of crustacean muscle doesn't raise any health problems. The second objective of this study was to evaluate the biological processes influencing PCB bioaccumulation in the spider crab Maja brachydactyla. From a quantitative point of view, organotropism, diet and age were the major factors acting on contamination. From a qualitative point of view, PCB fingerprints depended on sex, and to...

Histological Description of the Skin Glands of Phyllobates bicolor (Anura: Dendrobatidae) Using Three Staining Techniques International Journal of Morphology
Moreno-Gómez,Freddy; Duque,Tania; Fierro,Leonardo; Arango,Juan; Peckham,Xiomara; Asencio-Santofimio,Helberg.
The mechanisms to obtain and store skin toxins in frogs in of the family Dendrobatidae are not completely understood. In order to contribute to understand how toxins are stored, we provide a histological description of the cutaneous glands of the species Phyllobates bicolor. The skin of two adult frogs was examined through three histological staining techniques (hematoxilin-eosin, PAS and Masson Trichrome) using conventional optic microscopy. The skin of Phyllobates bicolor contains two types of exocrine glands: mucous and serous, which empty their products to the epidermal surface through an intra-epithelial duct that leads to a stoma. The mucous and serous glands and the intercalated ducts are surrounded by a discontinuous sheath of myoepithelial cells,...

Mercury distribution in different tissues and trophic levels of fish from a tropical reservoir, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Kasper,Daniele; Palermo,Elisabete Fernandes Albuquerque; Dias,Ana Carolina Monteiro Iozzi; Ferreira,Gustavo Luiz; Leitão,Rafael Pereira; Branco,Christina Wyss Castelo; Malm,Olaf.
Concentrations of organic (OrgHg) and inorganic mercury (InorgHg) were assessed in different fish tissues (liver, muscle, kidney, gut and gonads) and trophic levels collected in an impacted tropical reservoir in southeastern Brazil. Organic mercury concentrations in muscle were remarkably higher in the carnivorous species Hoplias malabaricus and Oligosarcus hepsetus. The ratios of OrgHg in relation to total mercury (%OrgHg) in muscle also varied according to the species trophic level: 93% for carnivores, 84% for omnivores, 73% for algivores/planktivores and 58% for detritivores. The %OrgHg in the gut tissue of carnivores (78%) was much higher than that found in omnivores (30%), possibly reflecting a process of trophic biomagnification in the reservoir. On...

Algae have been used as bioindicators by having several advantages such as they have short life cycles, they can take up nutrients directly from water, they are generally easy to collect in sufficient amounts from various habitats; and they readily accumulate compounds present in seawater, making tissue analyses reliable indicators of water quality. In order to evaluate the bioremoval capability of the green alga Rhizoclonium riparium, the photosynthetic responses to heavy metal pollution under different sublethal concentrations of copper was assessed. Photosynthetic rates were significantly low (p <0.05) at low copper concentrations, between (0.01 y 10 mg/l). Maximum photosynthetic values were shown at 30 y 60 mg/l and almost cero at 150 mg/ l of Cu....
