Kingsleya castrensis sp. nov., a pseudothelphusid crab is described and illustrated from the Xingu River, state of Pará, southern Amazon region, Brazil. The new species is characterized by the male first gonopod bearing a large, well-developed apical plate, with a broadly rounded, thick distal lobe. New records of Kingsleya junki Magalhães, 2003 extend the distribution of this species eastward to the Tocantins River basin, in the state of Pará, Brazil. |

Some individuals of the species Arenaeus cribrarius (Lamarck, 1818) bear a characteristic pink abdomen, which is notably different from the usual white coloration. The incidence of this chromatic alteration was determined for a single population and its relation with other individual variables were examined. The individuals were monthly collected from May, 1991 to April, 1993, in Ubatuba, São Paulo, with the aid of a shrimp fishery boat provided with double-rig trawling nets. All specimens were sexed, measured (CW = carapace width), distributed in 10-mm size classes and classified according to growth phase (juvenile and adult), molting condition and development stage of gonads. The occurrence of pink-colored morphs was also recorded. From a total of 2,096... |

The Hepatus pudibundus (Herbst, 1785) juvenile development was studied in laboratory, under the morphological and systematical stand points. The eight early juvenile stages were obtained from larvae hatched from eggs of two ovigerous females, collected at the northern coast of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The experiments were carried out in a climatically controlled room at 25 ± 1°C, and steady saltness of 34. The youngs were maintened individually and food consisted of Artemia sp. nauplii and fragments of fish muscle. The first juvenile stage were particulary drawn and described. For the remaining juvenile stages the most representative frameworks were picked out, which allowed the characterization of the first eight stages. According to juvenile... |

Several families were added in the past in order to constitute the Xanthidae, but the boundaries between Xanthidae, Parthenopidae and Goneplacidae were diluted, and the classification of some genera doubtful. By this reason was made the analysis of a typical genus of each subfamily occurring in Brazil. 50 characters were selected and coded as (0) for absence and (1) for presence. The data matrix was analysed by computer programs NTSYS and NMIX. The phenetic analysis shows the Xanthidae as a good family, but the cladistic one (Wagner tree) split them in four families: Carpiliidae, Xanthidae (with the subfamilies Menippinae, Platyxanthinae, Xanthinae and Eucratopsinae), Eriphiidae and Pilumnidae (with the subfamilies Trapeziinae and Pilumninae).... |

Associations between jellyfish and other organisms are frequently reported. Neverhteless, few of those records include crabs inhabiting medusae. Lychnorhiza lucerna Haeckel, 1888 were sampled (n = 1988) on the coast of the State of Paraná (25º20'-25º55'S, 48º10'-48º35'W), southern Brazil, from December 1997 to December 2004. Eight percent (166 individuals) of the medusae had one spider crab Libinia ferreirae Brito Capello, 1871 living within its subgenital porticus or on the oral arms. Megalopal stages of the same crab were also found on three jellyfish. All crabs associated with L. lucerna were young and smaller (< 3 cm) than solitary crabs caught on the bottom. Thus, L. ferreirae probably colonizes the jellyfish as a late larva and uses it as a... |

The present paper deals with data on zooplankton collected from the estuary of Potengi, Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil covering a period of one year from October 1992 to October 1993. Three fixed stations within the estuary located at varying distances from the mouth of the river were sampled. Sampling was done monthly when the tide was lowest. Analysis of the samples has shown clear pattern of seasonal variations in abundance of the dominant zooplankton components which are composed of Copepoda, Appendicularia, larvae of Brachyura, larvae of Cirripedia and Chaetognalha. A detailed study of the larvae of Brachyura was also attempted which showed that seven species can be identified in the samples, of which those of Aratus pisonii (H. Milne Edwards) and... |

Temnocephala lutzi Monticelli, 1913, ectosymbiont on brachyuran freshwater crabs of the genus Trichodactylus Latreille, 1828 is recorded for the first time in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Two hundred and seventy-nine crabs of two species were examined: 211 Trichodactylus panoplus (von Martens, 1869) and 68 Trichodactylus fluviatilis Latreille, 1828 of which 51 (24.17%) and 28 (41.17%) were positive for T. lutzi, respectively. Crabs of both species carried eggs fixed, exclusively, on the floor of the branchial chambers and/or on the lower side of the gills. Adult as well as young specimens were found inside and outside the branchial chambers. The temnocephalans were always devoid of body pigmentation, although they kept the red eye... |

The Brachyura collected on the continental shelf of Northern and Northeastern Brazil understood between the latitudes 4º27'N and 3º43'S and the longitudes of 50º00'W-38º00'W, were represented by 133 species, 79 genera and 15 families. The studied material, belongs to the carcinological collection of the Department of Oceanography of University Federal of Pernambuco. The informations obtained in relation to the areas in which these species are found, were gathered from the carcinological files cited above and bibliographic rcferences published until 1991. The majority of the species (125) was found exclusively in the western Atlantic, except three Anfi-Atlantics, two Anfi-Americans, two Circuntropicals and one Indo-Pacific. With regards to the latitude, 11... |

Abstract Freshwater crabs are important components of aquatic ecosystems; however, their distributions are restricted because of characteristics of their life history, which hinder conservation strategies. Fredius reflexifrons is a widely distributed freshwater crab of the Amazon basin with relictual occurrences in small wetlands on the Planalto da Ibiapaba in Northeastern Brazil. Habitat degradation, destruction of forest patches, channeling of water bodies, and the use of land for legume cropping can seriously impact the species by leading to the extinction of its relic populations, which have limited distributions in the Área de Proteção Ambiental (APA; Environmental Protection Area) Bica do Ipu of the Planalto da Ibiapaba. The objectives of this study... |
