Conditioning and aversion to toxic Solanum bonariense ("naranjillo") leaves in calves Ciência Rural
Ruiz-Santos,Paul; Pfister,James Alan; Verdes,José Manuel.
ABSTRACT: Solanum bonariense is a perennial poisonous shrub that induces cerebellar cortical degeneration when eaten by cattle. The aim of this research was to outline a protocol to induce a conditioned aversion to this plant. During the pre-conditioning period ten calves (126±12kg BW) were maintained at half of their normal energy intake with lucerne hay and water ad libitum, to stimulate consumption of S. bonariense. Every two days they were offered 100g ofS. bonariense leaves for 5 minutes. Calves began eating the target plant on day 10 and consumed all the plant material on day 12. The conditioning period began after each calf consumed the entire amount of S. bonariense for three consecutive sessions. Five animals were randomly selected for...

Detection of serum amyloid-A concentration in the calf clinically diagnosed with pneumonia, enteritis and pneumoenteritis Ciência Rural
Kabu,Mustafa; Elitok,Bulent; Kucukkurt,Ismail.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to determine serum amyloid-A (SAA) concentration in the cases of pneumonia, pneumoenteritis, and enteritis which are frequently encountered in calves in veterinary medicine. Although a great deal of experimental studies has been conducted in this field, studies on naturally infected calves are quite few. Eighty calves at the age of 0-6 months were used in the study and the calves were divided into four groups. Due to the clinical examination, the calves diagnosed with pneumonia (Group P; n=20), with pneumoenteritis (Group PE; n=20) and with enteritis (Group E; n=20) formed the disease group as the healthy ones formed the control (Group C; n=20) group. After the body temperatures of all calves were taken, blood samples...

Effect of anaerobic bovine colostrum fermentation on bacteria growth inhibition Ciência Rural
Saalfeld,Mara Helena; Pereira,Daniela Isabel Brayer; Valente,Júlia de Souza Silveira; Borchardt,Jéssica Lopes; Weissheimer,Christiano Fanck; Gularte,Márcia Arocha; Leite,Fábio Pereira Leivas.
ABSTRACT: Efficient handling programs that provide high quality colostrum in adequate amounts to dairy farm calves are needed to assure their health and survival. Replacers (or milk substitutes) often become necessary when colostrum presents inadequate quality, or in order to break the cycle of infectious disease transmission. In this study we aimed to assess the effect of anaerobic fermentation processing (colostrum silage) on bacterial that represent interest to animal health. Colostrum samples were inoculated with cultures of Brucella abortus , Escherichia coli , Leptospira interrogans serovar Copenhageni , Mycobacterium bovis , Salmonella Enteritidis , Salmonella Typhimurium , Staphylococcus aureus , and Bacillus cereus and then subjected to...

Relationship between passive immunity and morbidity and weight gain in dairy cattle Ciência Rural
Moraes,Mauro Pires; Weiblen,Rudi; Rebelatto,Marlon Cesar; Silva,Adriana Moraes da.
Serum samples from 87 calves from a dairy herd in Southern Brazil were collected to determine the levels of passive transfer and its relationship to morbidity and mean daily weight gain (MDG). Serum immunoglobulin (Ig) levels were measured by the zinc sulfate turbidity test at 24 hours of age in the calves. The average serum Ig level was 11.40g/l. Fourteen out of 87 calves (16.1%) showed serum Ig levels one standard deviation below the mean (4.59g/l) and were considered as having failure of passive immunity transfer (FPT). The occurrence of diarrhea from birth to weaning was higher in the FPT group (100%) than the normal group (90.7%) but the difference was not significant. The occurrence of signs of respiratory disease was similar in both groups (35.7%...

SULPHUR DEFICIENCY IN DAIRY CALVES REARED ON PASTURE OF Brachiaria decumbens Ciência Rural
Ortolani,Enrico Lippi.
The clinical picture of sulphur (S) deficiency is described by the first time in Brazilian dairy calves. Twelve crossbred six-month-old weaned dairy calves, reared on pasture of S-deficient Brachiaria decumbens, were used. The calves were randomly assigned in two groups of six calves each to verify the influence of S supplementation on some clinical and serum biochemical variables. All animals were fed a basal-supplement mix containing macro and microlements, urea and ground corn grain added (41gS/kg) or not of S (elemental S; 1g S/kg), for six months. At the end of the experiment, the S-supplemented calves had higher mean body weight (p < 0.01), body condition score (p < 0.016), serum inorganic sulphate concentration (p < 0.001) and serum albumin...

Bispectral index assessment in calves subjected to the continuous infusion of propofol combined with fentanyl administration Ciência Rural
Deschk,Mauricio; Trein,Thomas Alexander; Wagatsuma,Juliana Tessália; Silva,Guilherme Lopes da; Araújo,Marcelo Augusto de; Games,Bruna de Moraes Martins; Alcindo,Jefferson Filgueira; Rodrigues,Celso Antônio; Santos,Paulo Sergio Patto dos.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate the bispectral index (BIS) effects in calves through continuous infusion of propofol with or without fentanyl. Eight Holstein male calves (ages from six to twelve months old) with an average weight of 123±18kg were used. All animals participated in both groups, always keeping a minimum interval of one week between the anesthetic procedures; the calves were randomly distributed between groups. Anesthesia was induced with an intravenous (IV) dose of propofol of 5mg kg-1 in control group (GP) or with propofol (4mg kg-1) associated with IV fentanyl 0.001mg kg-1(GF). All the calves were positioned in right lateral recumbency and were allowed to spontaneously breathe room air. Subsequently, the anesthesia was...
