A case of leucism in the burrowing owl Athene cunicularia (Aves: Strigiformes) with confirmation of species identity using cytogenetic analysis Rev. Bras. Zool.
Nogueira,Denise M; Alves,Maria Alice S.
Leucism is an inherited disorder, characterized by the lack of pigments in part or all of the body, normal coloration of the eyes and, in birds, in naked parts such as the bill and legs. This kind of disorder is sometimes erroneously designated as albinism or partial albinism. In this study, we present a case of leucism in a wild owl. The studied individual presented completely white plumage, light-yellow coloration of legs and bill and normal coloration of eyes. According to morphological features, this owl is a specimen of burrowing owl, Athene cunicularia (Molina, 1782). To confirm the species identity, we used cytogenetic analyses for karyotypic determination, comparing it to the previously described one in the literature. We also studied a captive...

Sexagesimal scale for mapping human genome RChHN
CRUZ-COKE,RICARDO.
In a previous work I designed a diagram of the human genome based on a circular ideogram of the haploid set of chromosomes, using a low resolution scale of Megabase units. The purpose of this work is to draft a new scale to measure the physical map of the human genome at the highest resolution level. The entire length of the haploid genome of males is deployed in a circumference, marked with a sexagesimal scale with 360 degrees and 1296000 arc seconds. The radio of this circunference displays a semilogaritmic metric scale from 1 m up to the nanometer level. The base pair level of DNA sequences, 10-9 of this circunsference, is measured in milliarsec unit (mas), equivalent to a thousand of arcsecond. The "mas" unit, correspond to 1.27 nanometers (nm) or...

Cytogenetic study of pure breed and hybrid wild boar (Sus Scrofa Scrofa) in Southeast and South Brazil MV&Z
Lui, Jeffrey Frederico.
From December of 1977 to March of 1999, cytogenetic analyses were carried out with 1,137 boars from South and Southeast areas of Brazil. Three genetic groups of animal were cytogenetically identified: a) 2n=36 classified as pure wild boars, b) 2n=37, hybrid and c) 2n=38, called "Javaporco", ploidy which is equal to domestic pig. Being a subspecies as the domestic pig, the wild boars present facility in this breeding allowing the happening of different genetic groups in herd where the reproductive control is not appropriate.

Karyotype of native Zea mays ssp. mays Proto-Confite morocho Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Lopéz Medina,Segundo Eloy; Mostacero Léon,José; Quijano Jara,Carlos Helí; Gil Rivero,Armando Efraín; Rabanal Che Leon,Maria Fernanda.
Abstract Corn is a crop of great importance in the world since it constitutes a basic component of the diet of the population; a production of 1026.61 million tons was estimated during the present year. Currently, there are many theories about the wild ancestors of corn, being Proto-Confite Morocho one of the primitive races in Peru, which is attributed as the ancestor of numerous native varieties. Therefore, knowledge of its genetic constitution is important since it gives us the possibility of finding phylogenetic affinities and indicators of systematic classification. The present study was carried out with the purpose of elaborating the karyotype of Zea mays ssp. mays ‘native corn’ Proto- Confite morocho and determine the number and morphology of the...

Evaluation of the mutagenic effect of the iodinated contrast medium Urografina® 292 using the micronucleus test in mouse bone marrow cells Anais da ABC (AABC)
BELLE,MONICA B.B.; LEFFA,DANIELA D.; MAZZORANA,DALIANE; ANDRADE,VANESSA M. DE.
Contrast media (CM) are frequently used in diagnostic radiology and in radiotherapy as a diagnostic tool and in treatment planning. Previous studies have demonstrated that these compounds induce chromosomal aberrations. This study evaluates the mutagenic effects induced by the contrast medium Urografina® 292 (meglumine amidotrizoate and sodium-ionic dimmer) in bone marrow cells (BMC) of mice in vivo. Micronuclei assay was performed in BMC of CF-1 mice injected with CM 1.5 and 3.0 mL/kg intravenous doses and 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 mL/kg intraperitoneal doses. The animals were beheaded 24 h after treatment by cervical dislocation, and femur BMC from each animal were used in the micronucleus test. The group treated with the highest intravenous injection of Urografina®...

Karyological studies in Brazilian species of Lippia L. (Verbenaceae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Sousa,Saulo M.; Torres,Giovana A.; Viccini,Lyderson F..
The genus Lippia (Verbenaceae) comprise around 160 species spread out mainly in South and Central Americas with few African species, some of them with potential medicinal use. Brazil is one the most important centers of diversity with approximately 75% of the species described so far. Innumerous species are endemic and poorly studied especially at a cytological level. Here, chromosomal length, karyomorphology and chromosome asymmetry of twelve Brazilian species of Lippia were evaluated [L. alba (Miller) N.E.Brown, L. diamantinensis Glaz., L. florida Cham., L. hermanioides Cham., L. lacunosa Mart. & Schauer, L. lupulina Cham., L. pohliana Schauer, L. pseudothea (St. Hil) Schauer, L. rosella Moldenke, L. rotundifolia Cham., L. rubella Moldenke and L....

Karyotype description of Pomacea patula catemacensis (Caenogastropoda, Ampullariidae), with an assessment of the taxonomic status of Pomacea patula Biocell
Diupotex-Chong,María Esther; Cazzaniga,Néstor J.; Hernández-Santoyo,Alejandra; Betancourt-Rule,José Miguel.
Mitotic chromosomes of the freshwater snail Pomacea patula catemacensis (Baker 1922) were analyzed on gill tissue of specimens from the type locality (Lake Catemaco, Mexico). The diploid number of chromosomes is 2n = 26, including nine metacentric and four submetacentric pairs; therefore, the fundamental number is FN = 52. No sex chromosomes could be identified. The same chromosome number and morphology were already reported for P. flagellata, i.e., the other species of the genus living in Mexico. The basic haploid number for family Ampullariidae was reported to be n = 14 in the literature; so, its reduction to n = 13 is probably an apomorphy of the Mexican Pomacea snails. Lanistes bolteni, from Egypt, also shows n = 13, but its karyotype is much more...

KARYOLOGY OF MUGIL LIZA AND M. CUREMA FROM VENEZUELA Boletín de Investigaciones
Nirchio T.,Mauro; Cequea,Hernán.
Karyotypes of Mugil liza and M. curema from Venezuela were studied. M. liza karyotype is 2n=48 acrocentric chromosomes, but M. curema is 2n=24, containing one submetacentric and 11 metacentric pairs. The chromosomic complement described for M. liza constitutes the first report for the species and coincides with the modal karyotype (2n=48) in the Mugilidae family. Venezuelan M. curema karyotype differs in number and shape from M. curema from Louisiana (USA), which has been reported to have a complement 2n=28 (10 metacentric pairs, two subtelocentric pairs and two acrocentric pairs).

Karyotypic studies and morphological analysis of some reproductive features in five species of Conyza (Astereae: Asteraceae) from Northeastern Argentina Boletín de la Sociedad
Urdampilleta,Juan D.; Amat,Aníbal G.; Bidau,Claudio J..
The cosmopolitan genus Conyza Less. comprises about 100 species, 22 of which occur in Argentina. Current taxonomic treatments, largely based on exomorphological characters, are insufficient to characterize and circumscribe some of their polymorphic species. Interspecific variations in inflorescences typology and capitula structure, as well as karyotypic aspects, were studied in five species of Conyza that naturally occur in Misiones Province (Argentina): C. blakei (Cabrera) Cabrera, C. bonariensis (L.) Cronquist var. bonariensis, C. glandulitecta Cabrera, C. primulaefolia (Lam.) Cuatrec. & Lourteig, C. sumatrensis (Retz.) E. Walker var. sumatrensis and C. sumatrensis (Retz.) E. Walker var. floribunda (Kunth) J. B. Marshall. Chromosome numbers for...

Karyotypic studies in wild species of Arachis (Leguminosae) belonging to sections Erectoides, Procumbentes and Rhizomatosae Boletín de la Sociedad
Ortiz,Alejandra M; Silvestri,María C; Lavia,Graciela I.
Karyotypes of three diploid species belonging to sections Erectoides (Arachis hermannii), Procumbentes (A. rigonii) and Rhizomatosae (A. burkartii) were analyzed by Feulgen's technique. The karyotype formula was different in each of the taxa analyzed: 2n=2x=16m+4sm in A. hermannii, 2n=2x=18m+2sm in A. rigonii, and 2n=2x=20m in A. burkartii. All species had a pair of satellited chromosomes, which corresponded to type 2 in A. hermannii, type 9 in A. rigonii, and type 8 in A. burkartii. Arachis hermannii and A. rigonii presented chromosomal features similar to those of the other species included in their respective sections. However, A. burkartii showed chromosome characteristics different from those found in the rest of the species of section Rhizomatosae.
