Examination of the consumers’ ethnocentrism and products’ origin in the case of Hungarian foodstuffs AgEcon
Hamori, Judit; Horvath, Agnes; Lehota, Jozsef.
‘Consumer ethnocentrism’ is defined as consumers’ beliefs about the appropriateness or morality of purchasing domestic and foreign-made products. As a consequence of the influx of foodstuffs of dubious origin into Hungary and the increasing number of food scandals, demand for Hungarian foodstuffs of reliable origin has increased. Consumers, however, do not necessarily acquire information from the most reliable sources in the course of purchasing and most of them are not fully aware of what the trademarks featured on the various products mean. Our questionnaire survey sought answers to the questions of how respondents regard Hungarian products and what segments can be distinguished from the aspect of their attitudes concerning Hungarian products. We...

Less Discussed Dynamics in the Czech Farm Structure Development AgEcon
Curtiss, Jarmila; Ratinger, Tomas; Medonos, Tomas.
The paper provides an empirical study of the dynamics of ownership changes in Czech agricultural companies, which are assigned by unique heterogeneity in ownership forms. Since employee ownership has retained a relatively important place in these structures, neoclassical, as well as institutional theories of labour managed firms are considered. Building upon efficiency arguments, both approaches suggest the dissolution of labour managed firms. The empirical analysis utilized detailed survey data from 2004 and accountancy data from 1997 to 2003. We used cluster analysis to classify companies into homogeneous groups with respect to their ownership structure and stage of restructuring, and analysed these characteristics in relation to performance indicators....

Impediments to Employment and Enterprise Diversification: Evidence from Small-Scale Farms in Poland AgEcon
Chaplin, Hannah; Davidova, Sophia; Gorton, Matthew.
In an environment of low returns to agricultural activities and slow structural change, both employment and enterprise diversification have been presented as possible strategies for raising the incomes of farm households. This paper focuses on the barriers to taking up off-farm employment and establishing new non-agricultural enterprises. Factor and cluster analysis are applied to a data-set of individual farms in Poland in order to identify groups of households facing similar constraints and profile policy measures that are most likely to assist diversification. The majority of non-diversifiers are unlikely to become pluriactive in the near future due to a combination of age, a desire to concentrate on farming and remoteness. Farm households that are...

Test of Convergence in Agricultural Factor Productivity: A Semiparametric Approach AgEcon
Paudel, Krishna P.; Pandit, Mahesh; Poudel, Biswo N..
We tested for club convergence in U.S. agricultural total factory productivity using a sigma convergence test. We used the same club of states as used by McCunn and Huffman as well as different states within 10 clubs identified by the cluster analysis. Results showed convergence was evident only in a few club groups. Clusters group identified using a statistical method identified only converging clubs. Variables affecting total factor productivity among states were identified using parametric, semiparametric and nonparametric methods. Semiparametric and nonparametric methods gave a better fit than a parametric method as indicated by the specification test. Our results indicated that health care expenditure, public research and extension investment, and...

FARMER-TRADER RELATIONSHIPS IN THE INDONESIAN CHILLI MARKETS: THE ROLE OF RELATIONSHIP QUALITY IN MODERN AND TRADITIONAL SUPPLY CHAINS AgEcon
Sahara; Gyau, Amos; Stringer, Randy; Umberger, Wendy J..
A decade of strong economic growth, rapid urbanization and liberalization of foreign direct investment (FDI) are transforming Indonesia’s food retail sector. Modern retail markets are reorganizing how food chains operate: requiring product homogeneity, grading, sorting, packaging, and supply consistency. Current literature suggests that improving relationship quality among food chain actors enhances efficiency. In Indonesia, chillies are a priority crop commonly produced by small holders and like many other cash crops several farmer-trader issues emerging in chilli supply chains. This paper attempts to segment chilli farmers according to their perception of the relationship quality with their buyers. Data was collected through a survey of 602 chilli...

Small Business Marketing Capability in the Food Sector: The Cases of Belgium, Hungary and Italy AgEcon
Banterle, Alessandro; Carraresi, Laura; Stranieri, Stefanella.
The purpose of this paper is to assess the marketing management capabilities of SMEs producing traditional food products in EU through the development of a self‐evaluation tool. SMEs represent the greater part of European food firms and they find it very difficult to adapt to market changes, and to compete with big enterprises. In this context, marketing management capabilities play a key role in good SME performance in the market. The self-evaluation tool is developed in the innovative form of an interactive questionnaire published on the web. At the moment, the sample is composed by 60 traditional food producers located in three member states (Belgium, Italy, and Hungary) belonging to different sectors (cheese, beer, dry ham, sausage and white pepper)....

Consumers' behaviours and attitudes toward healthy food products: The case of organic and functional foods AgEcon
Annunziata, Azzurra; Pascale, Paola.
Over the last decade consumers’ health consciousness is becoming an important factor driving the agrofood market. Healthier food products have entered the global markets with force in the past years and rapidly gained market share. Consequently, the food industry has reacted to this trend by developing a growing variety of new products with health-related claims and images, including organic and functional foods that are selected by consumers for their health-promoting properties. Currently, the healthy foods and drinks market is performing well, in terms of innovation and market penetration; healthy foods in Europe have a turnover of € 5.7 billion. Different researches conclude that a better understanding of consumers' perception of healthy foods and its...

Livelihood strategies in the rural Kenyan highlands AgEcon
Brown, Douglas R.; Stephens, Emma C.; Ouma, James Okuro; Murithi, Festus M.; Barrett, Christopher B..
The concept of a livelihood strategy has become central to development practice in recent years. Nonetheless, precise identification of livelihoods in quantitative data has remained methodologically elusive. This paper uses cluster analysis methods to operationalize the concept of livelihood strategies in household data and then uses the resulting strategy-specific income distributions to test whether the hypothesized outcome differences between livelihoods indeed exist. Using data from Kenya’s central and western highlands, we identify five distinct livelihood strategies that exhibit statistically significant differences in mean per capita incomes and stochastic dominance orderings that establish clear welfare rankings among livelihood strategies....

Analysing the Impact of Decoupling at a Regional Level in Ireland: A Farm Level Dynamic Linear Programming Approach AgEcon
Shrestha, Shailesh; Hennessy, Thia C..
This paper describes a methodology to assess the impact of the decoupling of payments on Irish farms at a regional level. The methodology is based on a farm level dynamic linear programming model which optimises regional gross margin under a set of constraints. Regionally representative farms are selected using cluster analysis. The model maximises aggregate gross margins from all the farm types in a region allowing land and milk quota to transfer between farms within the region. The model is estimated for a baseline scenario, assuming no policy change, and under a decoupled scenario where farm payments are fully decoupled from production. An example of an impact study at the Border region in Ireland is presented in this paper to demonstrate the methodology.

Using Market Segmentation to Assess Consumers' Acceptance of Organic Eggs in Taiwan AgEcon
Huang, Wan-Tran; Chien, Chun-Yu.
The needs of the organic eggs are increasing; therefore, the farmers of chicken-egg (FCE) provide the best eggs to their consumers to satisfy their needs and wants. Because the FCE cannot satisfy every consumer’ needs, FCE has to focus on some specific groups to satisfy their needs and wants. This paper is to clarify the segmentation of the customers in middle Taiwan and build the empirical model via Cluster Analysis. The 460 samples are taken randomly without some adjustment, but only 341 samples are used. As the results, this paper gets the segmentations of product oriented, economic oriented, and production oriented, and which would be the target markets that the FCE should focus on.

MULTIVARIATE PROCEDURES FOR IDENTIFYING RURAL LAND SUBMARKETS AgEcon
Kennedy, Gary A.; Henning, Steven A.; Vandeveer, Lonnie R.; Dai, Ming.
Research has developed empirical models and procedures for analyzing factors which influence rural land markets; however, there have been limited efforts in developing procedures for identifying rural land submarkets. Principal component analysis is used here to detect the presence of multiple rural land submarkets. Cluster analysis is then used as a basis for identifying eight contiguous rural land submarkets in Louisiana. As opposed to single-attribute procedures that have been based largely on subjective judgment, multivariate procedures illustrated in this analysis provide a means for capturing the combined effects of physical and socioeconomic influences in delineating rural land submarkets.
