SOIL ENZYME ACTIVITIES RECOVERY AFTER ORGANIC TREATMENTS OF DEGRADED AREAS WITHIN VINEYARDS Organic Eprints
Lagomarsino, A.; Agnelli, A.E.; Fulchin, E.; Giffard, B..
Soil enzymes were used to assess the impact of different treatments applied in four farms, each one with three vineyards as replicates, on soil functionality. 8 enzymes related to C, N, S and P cycling were measured and functional diversity indexes were estimated. Three treatments were compared: compost, green manure and dry mulching with respect to degraded and non-degraded soil. The four vineyards showed different enzymatic patterns and response to treatments. Vineyards with the largest difference between degraded and non-degraded soil have benefited more largely from the treatments. In particular, dry mulching seemed to be more effective than green manure or compost, with the exception of San Disdagio. However, the effect the short term.

Commercial organic fertiliser as supplementary fertilisers in potato crop production Organic Eprints
Dierauer, Hansueli; Weidmann, Gilles; Siegrist, Franziska.
The nitrogen requirement varies depending on variety and usage. The conventional fertilisation amounts to 120 kg of N per ha in table potatoes and potatoes for processing. Early potatoes and seed potatoes require slightly less nitrogen at about 100 kg of N per ha. The nitrogen supply strongly depends on the conditions for N mineralisation (weather, humus content of the soil, preceding crop residues). Thus, optimising the N supply is complex. Nitrogen from the preceding crop: Grain legumes or cereals in combination with green manure are favourable preceding crops. Field peas may leave behind up to 50 kg net weight of available nitrogen, a mixture of grain legumes and barley up to 30 kg. Depending on the preceding crop and the soil, the nitrogen left...

Hansen, Martin N.; Mortensen, Henrik S.; Sørensen, Karsten.

Comparison between the effect of compost teas and copper on potato crop protection Organic Eprints
Khorchani, Slaheddine.
This work consists in studying the efficiency of various compost teas prepared from 4 different types of compost and according to various methods (aerobic and anaerobic) for the protection against the principal fungal diseases of potato. This is through two separate tests: the first, carried out in the field, consists to compare the treatments by compost tea with those by copper on organic potato crop against the late blight (Phytophthora infestans). The second, conducted in the laboratory, consists in the experimentation of these same compost teas in comparison with copper against two other fungi of potato: Rhizoctonia solani and Alternaria sp. on medium. With the field test, copper supported the best-obtained results. The best compost is compost 4 as...

Integrating maize and triticale in grass/clover based dairy systems: examining yields and autumn soil nitrate levels Organic Eprints
Pinxterhuis, Ina; Boer, H. de; Eekeren, N. van; Stienezen, M.W.J..
To establish N-efficient crop rotations with perennial ryegrass/white clover, maize and triticale, a 9-year field experiment was executed on an organic experimental farm in the Netherlands. Crop rotations with different levels of slurry (dairy effluent from the free-stall barn, average dry matter content of 7%) application were tested for dry matter (DM) yield, N yield, soil mineral N in autumn, soil organic matter and soil organic N. Maize cropping and slurry application both increased annual DM yield. However, the second year of grass/ clover following maize, maize itself and slurry applications each resulted in higher soil mineral N in autumn, increasing the risk of nitrate leaching losses. A rotation of 4 years of grass/clover, 2 years of maize and 1...

Efficient use of nitrogen from livestock manure Organic Eprints
Askegaard, Margrethe.
Optimized application of nitrogen from livestock manure will reduce nitrogen losses and result in higher yields. Practical recommendation Nitrogen application from livestock manure to winter and spring crops has different effects on crop yields depending on the pre-crop and the amount of ammonium-N provided. The results above show that nitrogen availability from livestock manure is limited. Based on the results, the following recommendations can be made: • If the pre-crop is not nitrogen-fixing, apply 20 to 60 kg of ammonium-N from livestock manure prior to sowing of crops. • Livestock manure application to a spring crop after nitrogen-fixing clover-grass is not yield effective and may bear the risk of nitrogen losses.   • If livestock manure is...

Studies on Soil fertility, Cow urine and Panchagavya levels on Growth and Yield of Maize Organic Eprints
Devakumar, N.; Subha, S.; Rao, G.G.E.; ImranKhan, J..
The present study revealed that higher grain and stover yield, plant height and number of leaves in maize with panchagavya, cow urine but it was comparable to recommended fertilizer treatments at higher level (200% and 300%). It can be concluded that presence of rich plant growth substances, both major and micro nutrients, beneficial microbial population in organic liquid manures help to bring rapid changes in phenotypic characteristics of plants and also improves the growth and ultimately improve the productivity of the crops. Liquid organic manure like panchagavya could be prepared locally by farming community and obtain increased yield levels. Such practices would pave way to reduce use of external inputs and increase sustainability among organic...

Element composition and quality of lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. Biweri), grown with sheep-manure composts Organic Eprints
Radics, László; Pusztai, Péter; Bíró, Borbála; Bíró, Zsolt; Németh, Tamás; Monori, István.
Two representative Hungarian soil-types (slightly humus sandy and loamy saline) were used to study the effect of various compost-products, made from sheep-yard manure and phosphorous amendments on the biomass-production of lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. Biweri) in a pot-experiment. Two types of phosphorous amendments, such as raw-phosphate with high- or a phosphorous rock with low solubility were used as amendments during the twelve-week composting process. Pots of five-hundred g weight were used and considering the ecophysiological demand of the lettuce, low (30 t/ha) optimum (60 t/ha) and provocative (120 t/ha) levels of manure compost were applied to the soils. Yield of lettuce and mineral content analysis were done by ICP and soil-analysis by TVG....

Effects of long term application of compost and poultry manure on soil quality of citrus orchards in Southern Italy. Organic Eprints
Canali, S.; Trinchera, A.; Intrigliolo, F.; Pompili, L.; Nisini, L.; Mocali, S.; Torrisi, B..
A six-year study was carried out in an organically managed orange orchard located in Sicily (Southern Italy) to assess the effect of compost and organic fertilizers utilisation on soil quality. Adopting a randomized-block experimental design with three replicates, four treatments were carried out. In treatments 1 and 2, two different composts (C1 from distillery by products and C2 from livestock wastes) were applied. The plots of treatment 3 were fertilized using dried poultry manure. The control treatment was fertilized with mineral/synthetic fertilizers. In order to verify the hypothesis that composts and organic fertilizers improve soil fertility, soil quality was evaluated by selecting dynamic soil parameters, as indicators linked to C and N cycles....

Legume-based catch crops inprove N-supply without increasing the N2O emission Organic Eprints
Li, X.; Sørensen, P.; Petersen, S.O.; Olesen, J.E..
Legume-based catch crops (LBCCs) may be an important source of nitrogen (N) in organic crop rotations since they are capable of taking up N both from the soil and from the atmosphere via biological N fixation (BNF). Consequently, they may help improve the crop yield through enhancing soil fertility and crop N supply. On the other hand, the legume-based catch crops may also have a negative impact on the climate as they may enhance the emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), which is a powerful greenhouse gas. Therefore, the findings from two research projects HighCrop (Organic RDD 2) and Legume Future (EU-FP7) are promising, as they show that a higher level of N2O emission is not necessarily the consequence of growing LBCC.

Spontaneous cover crop characterization is relevant to define a sustainable soil management strategy in vineyard Organic Eprints
Metay, Aurélie; Durocher, Eve; Garcia, Léo; Fried, Guillaume; Richarte, Jean; Ohl, Bénédicte; Bouisson, Yvan; Enard, Clément; Metral, Raphaël; Gary, Christian; Kazakou, Elena.
Spontaneous cover cropping is a common practice in Mediterranean vineyards because it is often seen as less competitive and easier to manage than sown covercrops. However, the services provided by the spontaneous flora highly depend on the species, these latter being influenced by the soil management practices. This study analyzes the specific and functional composition of the vineyard flora as influenced by three soil management strategies. To do so, weed cover was sampled at 5 dates during two years after the settlement of the experiment in a vineyard in the South of France. The three soil management treatments were: a control treatment (C) corresponding to a spontaneous cover regularly mowed, a spontaneous cover with organic amendment application each...

Supressive effects of yard waste compost amended growing media on soilborne palnt pathogens in organic horticulture Organic Eprints
Bruns, Christian; Schüler, Christian.
Suppressive effects of composts have been demonstrated mainly by American scientists with composted hard-wood bark as a part of container media for ornamentals. In this paper we report about experiments with yard waste- (YWC), biogenic waste- (BWC) and cattle manure compost (CMC) towards the soil borne pathogen Pythium ultimum Trow. There are results included from model composting systems and from yard waste composts originating from two commercial composting plants (C-YWC). It was shown that, in comparison to the other tested composts, YWC from the model composting system was superior in reducing disease incidence caused by P. ultimum on peas. In fifteen cases out of eighteen experiments with addition of 15 % compost the amendment of YWC resulted in...

Farmyard manure, plant based organic fertilisers, inorganic fertiliser - which sustains soil organic matter best? Organic Eprints
Raupp, Joachim; Oltmanns, Meike.
Legume biomass or pulse meal may be considered as alternatives to farmyard manure (FYM) in organic farms with small scale animal husbandry or in stockless organic farms. From 1996 a field trial was established on a poor sandy soil to compare plant based organic fertilisers, FYM and inorganic fertilisers, each applied at 100 kg ha-1 N. Additionally, FYM was tested at a higher rate of 170 kg ha-1 N. Average soil organic carbon content in topsoil (Corg) of the last crop rotation period (2002-05) is compared to that in 1996. Corg remained at the same level of 0.78 % only with FYM, while plant based and inorganic fertiliser decreased carbon contents to 0.74 and 0.72 % Corg, respectively. The higher FYM rate increased Corg up to 0.84 %. Based on these results,...
