In most developing countries, historically, the main strategy for improving the food sector has focused on increasing farm-level production. But in recent years, with the emphasis on value chain analysis, there has been much more focus on subsector studies, demand-driven approaches, and improving vertical coordination to assure product quality to final consumption markets. Millet, sorghum, and later rice were the traditional leading three cereal crops produced and consumed in Mali. Maize has trailed them for more than two decades, but from mid 1990s on, it has been produced and consumed in much larger quantities. Given the potentials of maize, developing and better organizing its subsector has the potential to not only increase revenues for maize farmers,... |

Drawing on survey data, this paper identifies the determinants of variations in farm gate milk prices for three CIS countries (Armenia, Moldova and Ukraine). We apply a multi-level modeling approach, specifically a bootstrapped and selectivity bias corrected mixed-effects linear regression model. The analysis suggests three main strategies for farmers to improve the price received for their output: consolidation, cooperation and stable supply chain relationships. While selling through a marketing cooperative has a significant and positive effect on farm gate milk prices, the majority of non-members are reluctant to join. The size of dairy operations, trust and contracting also impact positively on the prices received by farmers. Policy implications are... |

Cooperatives are not only a legal form, but also a form of organisation, which is owned by a group of individuals. For gaining and sustaining competitiveness cooperatives are forced to grow into certain minimum optimal size categories. Common measures of size are turnover or total assets. But, for cooperatives the number of members has been a quite popular measure for cooperatives' success, size, and their attractiveness. Although often mentioned, the number of members has only been taken as a given value, ignoring the influence of the group itself on its own size. However, there has been no attempt to measure the potential size of a group and its growth dynamic under a given set-up. With the development of a strategic decision game for a hypothetical... |

Structural changes in the dairy industry such as the adoption of Total Mixed Rations in place of manufactured complete feeds and declines in milk production in the areas served by locals are bringing these cooperatives to a crossroads where they must decide who will be their core customer. The ramifications of this choice are increased through market segmentation which enables cooperatives to more precisely meet the needs of producer-members but simultaneously increases diversity among members and, potentially, among locals themselves. Survey results from 247 locals indicated small producers (cl00 cows) made up 80 percent of their clientele. The production practices of these producers appeared to lag significantly behind the innovators and large producers... |

The thesis introduces the generation and mechanism of action of trust during cooperation, which indicates that trust can activate the members’ participation in management and investment, and preclude the generation of members’ will and behavior of breach of contract so as to guarantee the stable development of farmers’ cooperatives; the decreasing degree of trust can put sand in the wheels of farmers’ cooperatives. Based on these, we conduct survey of questionnaire on 197 rural households of 10 farmers’ cooperatives in Yanliang, Xi’an, Lintong and Yanglin . By analyzing the generation of trust mechanism and survey data, some suggestions are put forward as follows: promote inner communication; remodel the trust culture of informal system; hew to contractual... |

The Nation's 435 dairy cooperatives marketed 95.6 billion pounds of milk, or about 77 percent of all milk sold to plants and dealers in 1980. There were 146 cooperatives with no milk handling facilities, 97 with only milk and cream receiving stations, and 192 operating 456 dairy processing and manufacturing plants. Cooperatives sold about 16 percent of the Nation's packaged fluid products, 10 percent of the ice cream, 64 percent of the butter, 87 percent of the dry milk products, 22 percent of the cottage cheese, and 47 percent of all other cheese made in the United States. Additional data is given for prior years on transportation, producer payroll, and financial operations. |

Over the last decade Portuguese Agricultural Credit Cooperatives (ACCs) have increasingly face survival challenges related to their difficulty in gathering equity. The main source of ACCs equity is the net benefit; thus, understanding how ACCs governance can work on correcting bad economic performance is of crucial importance to overcome this constraint. The main objective of this paper is to describe the governance control mechanisms in the ACCs. Five governance mechanisms are identified: board and chairman change (internal mechanisms), central ACC intervention by an agent or by management board replacement and merger. Empirical analysis proved that the internal governance mechanisms activity is not related to the ACC performance. Additionally: (a) ACCs... |

This study identifies and analyzes factors that contribute to the success of small farms. Particular attention is given to the effect of participation in marketing and supply cooperatives on the success of small farms. Using modified net farm income per dollar of assets and operator’s labor and management income as measures of success, results show participation in marketing and supply cooperatives is positively correlated with success. Further, analysis findings indicate farm size, controlling for variable and fixed costs, type of ownership, management strategies used, working off the farm, and age of the operator are important factors that influence profitability (modified net farm income per dollar of assets and operator’s labor and management income)... |

This study describes organizational structure, functions, and facilities of forestry cooperatives in the United States. It evaluates their economic performance and explores current problem areas and potentials for future development. Cooperative organization provides woodland owners professional forestry assistance, in terms of forest management, marketing, and educational activities. Some cooperatives consistently provide these services at less than prevailing rates and obtain higher than average stumpage prices on a local basis. In addition, forestry cooperatives have the potential to play a great role in marketing alternative forest products, such as wood for energy. Woodland-owner organizations have a wide range of sizes, business activities, types of... |
