Today, more and more children are overweight or obese than ever before. Schools can play a prominent role in easing the situation. Schools have a great potential through the curriculum, health promoting programming and transportation to preventing children from becoming obese and overweight. However schools are complex social systems that does not necessarily by themselves adapt to this new health promoting role and thus committed management support is needed. Since schools are complex organizational structures convenient organizational structure are needed to formalize the praxis that stakeholders at schools should perform. Policies has become the preferred organizational instrument that management can use to frame the health promoting intentions.... |

Trust’ is considered an important driving factor for the development of ‘green growth’ strategies. An understanding of how ‘trust’ is created and maintained is crucial for those strategies. However, b& m research does neither offer consistent nor conclusive definitions of ‘trust’. Based on the review, a tentative suggestion is that the development of promising practices for the creation and maintenance of ‘trust’ is to be related to the organic complexities located in Denmark that characterize the transformation of the social space of organic agribusiness. Organic complexities are amongst others characterized by the highly fragmented meaning and current restructuring of the content of ‘organic’, diverse sale challenges, interdependences in the... |

Along with apparent institutionalisation of organic agriculture that took place in the last couple of decades, the role of organic agriculture organisations as a social movement actor has increasingly being put into question. Under this circumstance, there can be observed an evidence of “division” among these organisations at being foe or ally to this trend of institutionalisation. Why have such competing trajectories existed in this social movement field? And how have different trajectories evolved throughout the time? Through a comparative study of two organisations related to organic agriculture in Denmark and Japan, it argues that a cause of the discrepancy can be found in fundamentally different formulations of the concepts of organic agriculture... |

Infestation with Cirsium arvense in organic cropping is an increasing problem in many parts of Europe. In the present study, repeated hoeing during the first part of the growing season is suggested as a mechanical control strategy, aiming at diminishing the regenerative capacity of C. arvense. Results showed a linear relationship between the number of hoeing passes and the aboveground biomass of C. arvense in the subsequent year. However, the strong effect on the biomass of C. arvense was not followed by an increased crop yield. A low initial density of C. arvense, which did not cause any measurable yield loss, most likely explains this |

The title of the project is ”Modernity, time, space and organic food networks”. The empirical basis for the project is case-studies of four different alternative organic food networks. A fundamental assumption behind the project is that modernity causes disembedding, meaning functional differentiation and distanciation of food networks in time and space, which has potentially negative consequences socially as well as ecologically. The theme of the project can thus be summed up as four questions, which will be adressed in the thesis: 1.Does disembedding take place in alternative organic food networks? 2.If it does, how does disembedding take place? 3.Given that disembedding takes place, what are the driving forces? 4.Regardless if disembedding takes... |

Increasingly, food consumption occurs in out-of-home contexts, where organic food can also have a role to play. Public food services may be utilised to increase the sustainability of providing nutrition. Although school meals may be well suited to integrating organic food and sustainable nutrition concepts, school food provision systems are very different across Europe. This paper compares school food provision systems and their utilisation of organic food in Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy and Norway, discussing how various strategies and instruments used for organic food procurement in school meals may increase organic food consumption. Using five analytical categories—(a) type of school food service, (b) degree of public financing, (c)... |

This publication provides an overview of developments and future prospects from the perspective of public policy support and market growth. EU agricultural and food policies continue to have a significant impact on the development of organic farming not only in the EU-28, but also across Europe influencing market trends in EU Candidate and Potential candidate countries as well as countries within the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). Divided into three sections the publication firstly assesses the latest developments in EU organic food and farming policy, secondly it considers case studies of organic farming policy in action both in the EU and other European countries and finally it provides a detailed overview of organic farming and market... |

In Denmark organic farming presently experiences a recession with 500 organic farmers leaving the organic sector this year (out of a total of 3500 farmers) and a lot more are considering to revert. A range of earlier studies has reported on the process of modernisation of organic farming. Not at least in Denmark where a lot of conventional farmers have converted to the organic mode of production and where conventional/traditional production and distribution channels have adopted a line of organic products, and the established extension and advisory service includes both conventional and organic farming. The analysis in this paper is based on two qualitative interview studies among Danish organic farmers reverting in three regions of Denmark. The one... |

This study deals with competing strategic orientations of the organic agriculture movement toward institutionalisation: a division in whether organic agriculture should develop within the prevailing system (pro-institutional strategy) or preserve its alternativeness compared to conventional agriculture (anti-institutional strategy). It aims to investigate development and reasons of the specific strategies and evaluate their impact on the organic agriculture movement as a social movement. This aim is pursued by a comparative study of the leading organic agriculture organisations in Denmark and Japan: The former as a typical pro-institutional case and the latter as an anti-institutional case. The inquiry overall takes an integrative framework based on... |

Increased political support for public sustainable development and consumption strategies has made the school one of the preferred settings for public organic procurement policies in Scandinavian countries. At the same time the growing incidence of obesity among young people has created a considerable interest in strategies that can improve eating habits among school children. The meal patterns formed during adolescence is believed will be continuously influenced into their adulthood even following generations in the future and thus there is growing support for the idea that learning and lifeskills should be strengthened through initiatives related to organic and healthy foods at school. This paper report on the food transition taking place in school in... |

Organic dairy cows in Denmark has a higher frequency of liver abscesses, which is probably due to higher starch levels in the feed rations to high yielding cows compaired to conventional cows. Following abstract is based on experiments on young bulls and demonstrates whether replacing high-starch feeds with low-starch feed, such as dried grass pellets and sugar beet pulp, can reduce the problems with liver abscessation without reducing the performance level. The low-starch feed would be relevant to organic dairy production. In total, 41 Danish Friesian bulls (154±20 kg LW) were allocated into four treatment groups in a 2x2 factorial design fed either a high starch (N) or a high fibrous concentrate (F) and either chopped barley straw (S) or a mixture of... |

Public expenditure to counteract the effects of unhealthy lifestyle is increasing in most western countries and as a result health public healthy nutrition strategies to ounteract this development is to an increasing extent informed by evidence. Evidence is normally defined as an proof of the fact that interventions has an impact on some recognised problem of societal concern by using some generally and scientifically accepted method. Within the field of promotion of healthy and sustainable eating among young people a number of authoritative supranational bodies including Council of Europe, Commission of EU and WHO has called for action to be taken at school. Such policy documents are important to initiate action however they cannot create progress alone.... |
